Chapter 2:
Paladins awakening
As the dawn begins to break in the hills of Arendelle, Kieth and Lance are running through the forrest as fast as they could as they were looking for a certain someone. “ Shiro!, Shiro!” Kieth called on the coms but with no response only static. Lance could tell how worried Kieth was “ Do you think he’s okay.” he asked “I don’t know but what we heard wasn’t good.” Kieth said in response given what they heard from Shiro last it wasn’t a good sign. “Kieth, Lance come in” Pidge radioed in on the com link. “Pidge we’re here anything?” Kieth replied.
Not too far away Pidge and Hunk have found the Black Lion and are searching the area for their leader, but have so far found nothing. “ No Kieth we found the Black Lion, but theres no sight of him,” Pidge repealed sadly. Suddenly a beeping sound came from his gauntlet and after bringing up a holo map of the area it picks up a signal not to far from Kieth and Lances position which are marked in red and blue near a mark in purple. “ Hold on” Pidge said “ I’ve picked up his signal he’s not to far from where you are!” “ Meet us there as quick as you can he may need help” Kieth responded as he and Lance made their way to the signal source deep in the forest. They later arrived at the source of the signal, however they couldn’t see him anywhere. Kieth looked all over but couldn’t see anything. “Kieth over here!” Lance called and he came over to see what the Blue Paladin had found, it wasn’t Shiro but rather his helmet.
“Its Shiro’s helmet.” Lance said picking it up “But where is he?” Kieth said looking around a thought popped into Lances head “ You don’t think those wolves got him?”
“ Don’t be stupid Lance! Shiro wouldn’t go down without a fight, he’s got to be here somewhere” Replied Kieth in a sharp tone. “ Alright alright I’m just saying shesh.” Lance defended. Hunk and Pidge soon arrived on the scene and Hunk was trying to catch his breath from running so far.
“ So if Shiro’s not here where is he?” Asked Lance. Pidge then noticed something in the small traces of snow. “ Hey these look like tracks.” she said kneeling down. “ I bet we follow them we find Shiro.” The four Paladins then follow the tracks present in the snow and ground. Later down the forest they lose the tracks but then Hunk notices something.
“Hey theres smoke over there” He pointed out “ Maybe someone there knows where we’ll find Shiro.” “ Well lets find out, Lance you come with me you guys stay here.” Kieth suggested as he and Lance made their way to the smoke. They soon found the source as a small cottage puffing smoke out of the chimney like a steam engine. The two walked up to the front porch and above was a sign.
“ Wandering Okens Trading Post.” Kieth read then noticing the small sign below it “ and Sauna?” “Sauna!” Lance peeped “ Now we’re talking cmon” He said rushing inside whilst Kieth just rolled his eyes as he went inside. They entered the trading post and were then greeted by a large man sitting behind the desk.
“Hoo Hoo” He called getting their attention. “Big summer blow out, half of swimsuits clogs and a sun balm of my own invention yah.” Said the post owner which puts a rather confused look on the Red and Blue Paladins faces. “Uh no thanks” said Lance “but for the time being have you by any chance seen a tall guy with black hair and a scar?” He said raising his arm to show the height.” Nope only people I’ve seen today are you fellows.” Answered the post owner.
“Okay, well wheres the closest populated area?” Kieth asked “Oh that’ll be the Kingdom of Arendelle, its south down the mountain you can’t miss it.” the Post Owner answered. “Thank you, thats all we needed to hear.” Thanked Kieth as the two Paladins left.” By the way nice hat.” Lance complimented. “Hmm what odd young men and what was with that ones hair? Kids these days.” The Post Owner chuckled.
Arendelle:
The sun had risen on a beautiful day in Arendelle, and the suns rays began to pierce through the windows of the castle. Inside one of the guest rooms the sun shone over an unconscious Shiro as he lay in a deep sleep, until he felt the heat of the suns rays on his skin making him slowly wake up. He sat up slowly groaning as he did, he then looks to find himself in a large bed in a large room with an oak dresser on his bed side, a closet a large triangular window with walls decorated with what appeared to be crocus flowers.
“Whe.. where am I?” he groaned. He slowly stepped out of bed and found himself wearing a green shirt and pants. He was surprised to see himself in different clothes. “ Where’d” He then saw his Paladin armour sitting in the left corner of the room. He tried to stand up but he felt dizzy, so he sat back down. He suddenly heard the sound of the door knob being turned on the other side of the bedroom door. Shiro was readying his hand but as the door creaked open it revealed a young woman with beautiful blue eyes, platinum blonde hair with red lipstick on her lips. Her most distinguishing feature though was her blue sparkling dress with snowflake patterns on it.
“Oh good your awake.” She said glad that the stranger was awake whilst he looked at her with awe. “How are you feeling?” she asked which brought Shiro back to reality after a minute of awkward silence.
“Oh uh I’m fine thank you” He replied the woman then came over and sat next to him, though he was still confused. “How exactly did I get here?” He asked “Well we found you unconscious in the hills,” She answered “ we brought you to Arendelle, you seemed hurt.” Shiro then remembered most of what happened how he was chased by wolves down the hill but the rest was a blank. “Arendelle whats that?” The woman seemed surprised that he didn’t know what Arendelle was. “ Well this place is Arendelle, and this is the castle.” She replied and Shiro summoned some strength to look out the window and what he saw was beyond belief. He was in a castle and below was a small village, and saw there were human women, men, and children walking around the streets. This meant one thing he was on Earth or so it seemed.
The woman then stood next to him and saw the surprised look on his face. “ You seem surprised.” She observed. “ Well yeah.” Shiro breathed “I’m on Earth but how, i, its impossible.” The woman was confused by what this stranger was talking in the way he was but then again she had only just met him and didn’t know much. However she could tell by the scar he carried that he had suffered a lot. “Well if your feeling up to it your welcome to join my sister and I for breakfast.” She said getting his attention. “ I’ve had clothes provided for you. Feel free to head down to the dining room when your ready.” She said leaving, as she reached the door Shiro was about to ask something until. “Its just down the hall down the stairs first door in the hall.” She beat him to it.
She left the room leaving Shiro with an impressed smile on his face. However, at the same time he couldn’t help but feel something strange about the woman he just met not the evil kind but something else. His gut told him he would find out soon enough, but never the less he picked up the clothes and went to get changed.
Meanwhile at the entrance to the kingdom village, the four Paladins now in their casual attire had just arrived in Arendelle. Pidge realised it would be a good idea to wear casual clothes instead of their Paladin suits to avoid giving a bad impression. They looked at their surroundings and saw the village full of life with little children playing in the streets.
“Wow.” Breathed Pidge “So this is Arendelle.” “Yeah not bad not bad at all.” Lance observed. “Well don’t fall in love with it we won’t be staying long.” Kieth dismissed “We have to find Shiro.” “Well our best bet would be to split up and look around we’ll cover more ground.” Hunk suggested.
“Right you guys check the west half of the village I’ll check the east.” Kieth instructed “If anyone finds Shiro contact the others.” Everyone nodded and they went their separate ways. “ Oh and guys” Kieth called getting their attention.”Try not to cause any trouble.”
“Oh come on Kieth you know us.” Defended Lance innocently “I know, thats why I said it.” Kieth said leaving Lance glaring at him.
Meanwhile in the castle the castle maids had just delivered an oatmeal breakfast to Anna and Elsa in the dining room , and left a third plate at the other end of the table. The dining room doors then opened and they saw stepping into the dining room was Shiro now wearing a white long sleeved cuffed shirt, showing his hand and prosthetic, black pants and leather boots.
“Thanks for the clothes, I hope I’m not too overdressed.” Shiro joked “Oh no of course not.” Anna giggled “So how are you feeling?” she asked. “Great just getting over these bruises.” Shiro answered “Oh, I don’t believe we’ve introduced ourselves.” Elsa realised, Shiro realised this too. “Oh well, my names Takashi Shirogane but you can call me Shiro.” He introduced.
“ A pleasure.” Elsa replied “I’m Queen Elsa of Arendelle and this is my sister Princess Anna.” She introduced “Queen!” Shiro said in surprise “I apologise your majesties I meant no disrespect.” He apologised bowing in respect. “Oh no its alright Shiro you don’t need to bow.” Elsa assured as they took their seats at the table and began to eat their breakfast.
Shiro was enjoying the taste of the oatmeal as it had been a while since he ate anything other than Altean food. Anna and Elsa were enjoying their breakfast too.
“Mmm this is delicious.” Said Anna cheerfully “ Are you enjoying yours Shiro?” “You guys seem to get more excited about Oatmeal than I do.” Shiro chuckled “ But I must admit this is the best thing I’ve ever tasted.” “Well we’re glad you like it.” Said Elsa “But if you don’t mind me saying the way your eating is almost like you’ve never tasted Oatmeal before.” She observed the way he was eating and how he was savouring the taste. “Well lets just say where I’m from I don’t have the luxury of breakfast like this.” He said.
“Well on that matter, why were you up in the hills last night and unconscious?” Anna asked. Shiro gave a moment to respond but gave a light chuckle “Well you wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” He said which did confuse them.
“ But for the most part I accidentally crashed in the forest and got separated from my friends.” Shiro continued deciding to tell how he got here he didn’t think they’d believe he crashed a space lion. “ I tried to contact them but instead got ambushed by wolves.” Anna was especially interested at this point. “So that explains why you were so hurt.” She said. “Yeah just managed to lose them, but after that the rest was a blank.” Shiro finished.
“Well I guess your lucky we found you.” Elsa said. “Yeah but I just wish there was a way to contact my friends let them know I’m okay.” Shiro said wondering “ Well until then your welcome to stay with us until you do.” Anna offers “No I don’t wish to..” Shiro said “Oh its no trouble at all, we have plenty of extra rooms.” Elsa assured. Shiro took the time to think until coming to a decision. “Okay then, I’ll stay.” “Great!” Anna beamed “ And who knows your friends maybe closer than you think.” she added putting a smile on Shiros face admiring her optimism.
In the Village.
She was right though, In the west side of the village near the castle the Green, Blue, and Yellow Paladins were walking around the village. They admired the colourful buildings and saw people selling fruit in the fruit stalls, “You know I kinda like it here.” Hunk said looking around “You said it Hunk, I might think about retiring here.” Lance agreed. Pidge meanwhile was studying the architecture of the village buildings and stalls, even seeing human people walking around was a surprise.
“Guys, judging by the architecture and style of the houses it looks dated around 19th century Norway.” She devised “Yeah now that you mention it, this kinda reminds me of the history vids we were shown in the Garrison.” Hunk agreed “ I wouldn’t know I had my eyes closed for most of it.” Lance said “but whats your point Pidge we’re in the past?”
“ I’m not sure, I mean look at the peoples speech it seems equal to that of modern day english.” Pidge continues as they observed the baker talking to one of the locals. This gets her fellow Paladins even more confused. “Which means theres only one explanation.” Pidge began “I think when the Blue Lion fired at the witch the collision of the two energies caused a temporal anomaly effect sending us to an alternate dimension.” This left the Paladins surprised to say the least. “Wait you mean like what Slavs going on about?” Lance guessed.
“Wow so the theory of the multiverse is true!” Hunk said amazed. Suddenly they heard something growling and then realised it was Hunks stomach. “Speaking of true its been an hour since I last ate and I’m starving.” Said Hunk hungrily holding his stomach. “Yeah but you threw up the minute we got here.” Said Pidge in a deadpan way.
“I know weird right.”Hunk then noticed something nearby and it was a cart selling apples, carrots and bread. “Hey a food cart” He called as he ran over to it, with Lance following him close behind. Pidge then followed, but then out of the corner of her eye she saw something. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing, it was a small snowman walking around and laughing as he chased a small butterfly. Pidge took off her glasses and rubbed both her eyes and when she looked again it wasn’t there.
“Pidge, Pidge.” Said Lance clicking his fingers while she had a dumbfounded look on her face until finally getting her attention “ Huh what?” she replied “You feeling okay?” Lance asked. “Yeah I just, I could’ve sworn I saw… nah I’m imagining things.”Pidge dismisses as they catch up to Hunk. Later the three friends were sitting on the steps of harbour, each of them eating apples whilst looking at the boats passing by. “Mmm it’s good to be eating apples again.” Said Hunk delightfully savouring the taste of food from Earth for once. “ I hear ya its been a long time since we’ve eaten anything that wasn’t Altean food goop.”Lance agreed.
Pidge was just reaching for a bag of carrots they bought until she saw that a reindeer was eating them out of the bag. The reindeers gaze then looked to see that Pidge was looking at him, and he slowly back off. “Oh hey hey there fella its okay.” She assured and so she got a carrot out of the bag and slowly offered it to the reindeer. The reindeer approached it and sniffed it with his nose, smiled and chomped on it as Pidge stroked him.
“There your not so bad are you.” She cooed. “He seems to like you.” Called a voice and Pidge saw there was a man standing near the reindeer, he was dressed in green, black and brown, he had blond hair and brown eyes. “Oh is he yours?” Pidge asked. “Yeah sorry if he ate your carrots.” The man apologised “Aw man I was saving those for later.” Said Hunk seeing the empty bag. “Ah well” He and Lance then noticed the man Pidge just met.
“Oh hey there.” Lance greeted. The man then noticed the three strangers attire. “I’m guessing you three aren’t from Arendelle.” He guessed. “Yeah I guess you could say we’re from out of town.” Hunk said scratching the back of his head. “Yes uh, we’re simple travellers from distant lands, seeking enlightenment.” Said Pidge, Lance knew that was a line from his favourite game but decided to stay quiet.
“ My names Pidge, this is Hunk and Lance.” she finished. “Nice to meet you, I’m Kristof and this is Sven.” Said Kristof gesturing to his reindeer companion. “Well if this is your first time here, we could show you around.” he suggested. “Really!” Hunk peeked. “Thanks we’d appreciate it.” Pidge thanked and so they headed out into the village with Sven close behind them, but unknown to them they were being watched by someone in the shadows.
Meanwhile on the east side of the village in the hills, Kieth was looking around searching for his leader and brother figure. “Excuse me?” He asked a local getting her attention “Yes can I help you young man?” she asked. Kieth then reached into his pocket pulling out an old photo of Shiro in his Garrison uniform “I’m looking for this man have you seen him?” He asked showing it to the local. “No I haven’t seen him sorry.” she said walking away and Kieth put the photo away in disappointment.
Suddenly he heard crying and he turned to see the source. It was a little girl being bullied by two older boys that were holding her doll. The bullies kept pulling harder and harder on the dolls arms and as they did the girl kept sobbing sadly.
“Thats right be careful or dolly might lose her arms!” Said one bully as the other laughed. “Beat it you punks.” Said a voice from behind them. “Oh yeah.” Said the other bully “Whose going to make us?” He asked as they turned around and saw standing behind them was Kieth with a very serious look on his face. “Boo” He said simply, and the bullies instantly dropped the doll and ran away tripping over each other as they did. Kieth then knelt down and picked up the doll which he handed back to the little girl, who instantly grabbed onto it and hugged it with all her might. She then heard her mother calling, and ran over to her but then looked back to the stranger who helped her.
“Thank you sir.” She said waving to him which he was all but happy to return even cracking a small smile, he had to admit he was beginning to like this place too.
As the day went on in the castle Shiro was given a tour to help find his way around, Elsa and Anna showed him around. Though he realised he was in a different world he still felt he was back on his earth, seeing friendly faces and actually walking around something that wasn’t an alien ship. However at the same time he wondered where his friends could be and if they were okay. As the evening drew in Kieth was waiting at the bridge near the castle gates for his fellow Paladins, and was tapping his foot impatiently. Soon he heard laughing and talking and approaching were Pidge, Lance and Hunk who were talking to each other.
“Where have you guys been?” Kieth asked impatiently “Sorry Kieth, we just met this guy who showed us around this village and most of the Kingdom we just lost track of time.” Explained Hunk. This made Kieth look with a scowl on his face “So whilst I was looking around for any sign of Shiro, so we could find a way home.” He began trying to not lose his cool “ you’ve been off having FUN!” He finished with a groan.
“Kieth!” Breathed Lance innocently “I’m surprised you’d suggest such a thing, we weren’t having any fun, I mean the village was awful.” But in actual fact they were walking around the village with Pidge looking at the different stalls with Sven whilst Hunk looked at some food stalls and talked to Kristof as Lance photographed everything. “ And don’t even get me started on the boats in the harbour! Boy that was beyond boring.” Lance said but actually they were onboard one of the boats and Lance was leaning from the mast of the ship like a pirate, whilst Pidge was wearing a captains hat and pretended to look through a spyglass. Hunk on the other hand was throwing up over the left side of the ship whilst Kristof and Sven looked in disgust.
Kieth raised his eyebrow not believing a single word of Lances story. “Well besides that we learned a lot about this kingdom.” Pidge pitched in. “But we couldn’t find Shiro.” Kieth then sighed “ Neither could I, but its getting late we should get back to the lions.” Lance then stopped him. “Hold it mullet, have you forgotten what creeps up there at night!” Lance reminded “ and I’m in no mood to be wolf chow!” Kieth then remembered the wolves and how it was too dangerous. “Okay then we’ll find a place to stay.” he then suggested. Hunk then remembered something. “ Hey I think I remembered seeing an Inn nearby.” he suggested and so the four Paladins nodded.
They later arrived at the local Inn and the four Paladins were at the reception desk. “Room for five please.” Kieth asked the clerk “How you going to pay for it son” the clerk asked the four friends reached into their pockets but they soon realised that they had only Gac (Galra currency) and no earth money the money Hunk had he spent on the snacks from earlier. “Oh uh we don’t have any money so…” Hunk saw that the clerk had a stern look on his face, the next thing they new the front door to the inn slammed in their faces. “ Well that was a bust.” Hunk said out loud causing the others to glare. “Aww there goes luxury room service.” Lance said in disappointment. “Guys relax,” Said Kieth “I know a place we can sleep, and its free.”
“You are kidding right” The Paladins found themselves standing outside a small barn near the trading post Kieth and Lance were at earlier “You want us to sleep in an old shack!” Lance exclaimed. “ Look we can’t go back to the Lions because of the wolves and since we don’t have anymore earth money this is the best option.” Kieth reminded “and be glad I remembered this place when we first came by.” “ Guess its better than nothing.” Pidge said “Yeah besides this reminds me of the survival missions we did in the Garrison.” Hunk said whilst Lance didn’t like it he knew this was the best option and the pilot seats in the lions didn’t make very comfortable beds.
As night fell the lights went out in the barn, Hunk was sleeping on the hay bales and snoring like a chainsaw. Pidge was sleeping on a separate hay bale and used the sheets nearby as a blanket and had her glasses on a crate nearby. Lance meanwhile slept using his jacket as a blanket on a hay bale and wore an eye mask and headphones as he slept. Kieth meanwhile was sitting on a barrel near the window as he couldn’t sleep, he looked to see a view of the kingdom and how the lights were going out. He still couldn’t stop thinking about where Shiro could be but he knew to never give up, if he was in the kingdom he would find him.
In the castle
Meanwhile In the castle guest room Shiro was turning in for the night, and he looked out the window and thought about everything that just happened he was sent to an entirely different world, he met a queen and princess and was in a friendly environment. However at the same time he couldn’t forget he had a mission of his own and that he couldn’t stay here forever, he would need to find his fellow teammates and find a way home. He couldn’t help but wonder something about the queen, it was how he was when they found the Blue Lion but he decided to put it to rest for now and so turned in for the night.
Unknown to the sleeping habitants of the castle some men in black robes snuck over the castle walls. They stuck to the shadows to avoid being spotted by the patrolling guards and found their way to the castle guard house. They went inside and found some guard uniforms and one of the hooded mercenaries smiled sinisterly. “Okay boys, time to make our client very happy.” He said as he and his group had sinister intentions for the castle habitants.
