I always worry about responding to it at all because I then sound desperately defensive and weird if I list all the very strong women that we’ve imported into Sherlock that weren’t even in the original or the number of times I have the Doctor saved by the women in his life. I just think I sound like a defensive idiot if I do that. So, what can I say? I think it’s important that there is a feminist critique of television because things that go unquestioned go unchanged and what goes unchanged becomes institutionalized and what becomes institutionalized becomes your fault. So, it should be questioned. I think some of the criticisms that are aimed at me personally are absurdly over the top and unfair, but then, who said the prosecution has to be fair? And it’s a case that needs to be prosecuted. When it’s personalized insults that my kids can see, that’s pretty bad. That’s bad form, I’d say, and it’s not the way you conduct a reasoned argument. But, as I say, who says the prosecution has to be fair?

There are a few things that I think are important to take away from this quote. The first: that Steven Moffat really values feminist critiques and believes that without them we end up with institutionalized sexism in the media. The second: that he doesn’t feel comfortable trying to defend himself from accusations of sexism in his work. Finally: that he doesn’t think you need to be fair to him when making these criticisms.

So if you are going to claim that he has a giant ego, that he doesn’t care about criticism: I don’t want to hear it. If you are going to say that he dismisses all criticism as “hate,” you would be wrong. He is actually more concerned with the existence of the discussion than he is with making sure he comes out ok. And that’s something that’s to be admired.

and this is why i don’t understand the blind hatred for this man

Well. They’ve seen you.

This is one of the most important moments in the show.

#Moffat never ever shows that the Doctor’s actions have consequences #he’s just running around space and time #being awesome #committing a bit of genocide #and it’s not like anyone ever notices or cares #and it never impacts the lives of the people he cares about #OH WAIT (via tillthenexttimedoctor)

I think this is it. I think this is my favorite post on tumblr.

Except don’t you see? Clara’s entire arch was about how she wasn’t a special snowflake. The Doctor’s fascination with her as a mystery was shown to be unfounded. In the end she was just an ordinary girl. Clara Oswald was just an ordinary human girl who made the extraordinary decision to save her best friend.

And what’s so bad about being special? Need I remind you that Clara’s not the only one with a title. Rose was “Bad wolf” and “Defender of the Earth.” Martha was “The Girl that walked the Earth” Donna was “The most important woman in creation” and Amy was “the girl who waited.”

And what do you mean no personality? Clara’s sassy and brave, yet hesitant and a little afraid of the new things the Doctor shows her. She’s a control freak and is quick to give the Doctor a piece of her mind. She is nurturing and great with kids. She has absolute faith in the Doctor, and seems to have abandoment issues. She looks up to her mom a great deal and is very accepting and responsible. She’s very talkative clumsy and seems confident in her body and content with her life for the most part.

As for her backstory, were we watching the same show? She was born in Lancashire, England in 1989 to Ellie and Dave. When she was little, she was constantly losing things and once she got lost at the beach, but her mother found her and told her that she would “always find her, wherever she was.” Her mother died when she was 16 and she was left devastated. Clara planned to travel the world in her mother’s memory, but then tragedy stuck when a family friend died and she selflessly gave up her dream to be a nanny for the kids. She doesn’t believe in destiny and her biggest fear as a child was getting lost. She went to University and studied literature. I could write a book just about her backstory.

You also have to remember that Clara is not her echoes.

Clara: But the echoes could save the Doctor, right?
River: But they won’t be you. The real you will die. They’ll just be copies.

The echoes are obsessed with the Doctor because that’s what they were designed to be. They were designed to save the Doctor, so what use would they be if they just let him walk by and into danger?

I applaud Moffat when it comes to Clara. This is one of the first (if you include Donna) full time companions to take time to debate whether travelling with the Doctor is a good idea; she is hesitant to abandon her responsibilities and run off with a strange man. And even after, she only travels with him on Wednesdays. SHE IS INDEPENDENT OF HIM. He didn’t change her because she is confident that she doesn’t need to change for anybody. (read this x, especially #4)

Clara is just an ordinary girl and I lover her character arch. She’s got a life outside of the Doctor (she’s an English teacher!) but she’s loyal to him because he’s her best friend. I can’t wait to see how she interacts with Twelve. I could go on and on about how Clara has not had her potential “ruined.” She’s a strong, capable woman. She’s an incredibly detailed and three-dimensional companion and I just don’t understand why Clara and Moffat get so much hate.

And don’t even get me started on River Song, because it would be even longer than this.

TL;DR: Clara is an incredibly detailed and three-dimensional companion and I just don’t understand why Clara and Moffat get so much hate.

It is very very touching when people are properly, creatively engaged in the show you are making. It genuinely is. And I say this about the other one (Doctor Who) too. There is no greater flattery than people not simply consuming it, but making more of their own. To look at a show and say ‘I think I’ve got that. I think I can do better than that. I think I could make something out of that.’, that is the beginning of becoming a creator yourself. So in a genuine, proper heartfelt way, I am saying that a fandom is the cradle of the next generation of creative people. That is fantastic. That is amazing. There is no bigger compliment. … There is a weird thing where you can’t really respond to it. You can’t really interact with that, because that’s the wrong way ‘round. Because it is not like we’re there to mark your work and say: ‘No, you’ve got that all wrong.’ That would be horrible and limiting. Eventually what happens with things like that is people make up their own stories their own versions, their own pornographic versions in many cases. Well, what wrong with it? […] Genuinely, all of that response is brilliant and even that, even that thing (porn) is extraordinary, that it has that response. People become creative. […] It’s not dismissiveness or not being pleased by it, It is just… you can’t interact with it. That’s not how it works.

Some common Moffat misconceptions (1/?) - “Amy, River and Clara’s life revolve around the Doctor”

They have always had a life outside of the Doctor - Amy and Rory grew up together, and without knowing it they grew up along with their daughter - and had perfectly ordinary lives The Doctor met Amy as a little girl, and made his impact - but she still kept her accent - she was always Amy, and even though getting left behind by the Doctor affected her, she still managed to find love on her her own.  When she travels with him we see her constantly defying the Doctor, she has ideas on her own, and she is never fully dependent on him. We see her regaining her parents, and we see her getting a family in form of Rory and River.  Amy’s story is about growing up, and detaching herself from the Doctor - in TPOT we see this struggle - we also so her hanging out with friends, and being normal and domestic with Rory.  The last thing we see Amy do is choosing a normal life with Rory - she actively leaves the Doctor to have a life on her own.
The first time we meet River she is leading an expedition - she is a professor, and even though The Doctor was the reason for choosing archeology (both Martha and Rose chose their careers because of the Doctor as well, but people tend to forget that) - she continue with archeology long after she finds the Doctor again She goes on adventures on her own, she visits her parents - and occasionally she runs into the Doctor - but she manages herself perfectly fine on her own. She refuse to travel with the doctor regularly on two occasions. She also mention having dating other people.  The line “Time can be rewritten” is repeated on show several times - it shows that the characters are perfectly capable of changing the future by making other choices - River is never tied to the doctor due to their reversed timelines - being together with him was always her choice. When she says her final goodbye to the doctor, she admits being able to cope with loosing him - meanwhile he admits having grown too attached to her.  Clara doesn’t travel with the Doctor all the time either - in NIS it seems like they only travel together on wednesdays. Clara commits her time taking care of the Maitland kids - as her mother died, and she felt a sense of obligation to her. We actually got an entire episode with Clara protecting the kids-  We also get a good understanding of how close she was to her mom - we see that it was her mom who inspired her to travel, and it was her moms memory that motivated her to save the Doctor.
In addition we see Clara fight Cybermen on her own, she stops herself from getting to attached to the doctor emotionally (“The trick is don’t fall in love - I do that trick every day”) - and sometime between TNOTD and TDOTD she got a job as a teacher.
So yeah - their storyline might be related to the Doctor - but we’ve seen quite detailed aspects off their life outside traveling - including family, jobs and friends.
