ONCE MORE, I THINK I'LL LIVE FOR OTHERS
So of all the characters in Jujutsu Kaisen Megumi has turned out to be one of the most controversial and hotly debated characters. There's nothing the internet hates more than a boy with trauma, I guess. Jujutsu Kaisen is a controversial work in general so it's not surprising that the ending wasn't super well received by the fans, especially in the way it decided to conclude Megumi's character arc.
There are many people accusing Gege of giving Megumi no character development. Of Megumi just choosing to replace Tsumiki with Yuji. Lots of complaints about Megumi never finishing his domain expansion among other things. Of Megumi being nothing more than a damsel for Yuji to rescue in the end. I'm here to say I think Megumi does have a complete character arc even if it didn't end the way I would have liked, and under the cut I'll be giving my thoughts for Megumi's ending and JJK's ending in general.

This just reminded me on how in Chinese culture calling someone brother/sister is so common? Like I call my sister’s friends older brother and older sister too, not because they have blood relations to me but more because they’re my senior and that’s a sign of respect. There’s no way I will ever call my older sister’s friend by their own name, that’s just very disrespectful. I also call everybody who is more senior than me at school as gogo or jiejie because that’s the courteous thing to do.
Even my cousin who marry her husband who is way older than her still call him by gogo (teochew dialect for gege aka older brother).
Sometimes calling somebody by gege actually can be a flirtatious thing! Why do you think WWX likes to call LWJ Lan-er gege to tease him?? You don’t call people your age/classmates with gege, it’s usually used to say “look at me, here I’m trying to flatter you wink wonk” lol
I think our usage of brother and sister is a lot more liberal than what western people are comfortable with.
I’m kinda losing it bc I wrote this months ago and now on twitter there’s controversy about how some ppl find it weird the chinese called their partner gege/brother sdlasdjasj I knew this is coming one day BUT STILL

I have mixed feelings on how the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are discussed on twitter. While I think the criticism towards lack of culpability from the US has merit, I feel that many people forgotten that Japan was not a mere victim of war. Japan was also a big player in world war and a colonial empire that treated their colonies terribly. In Indonesia (then Dutch East Indies) alone it was estimated that 4 million Indonesian people died during Japanese occupation due to famine and forced labour.
I feel that there should be a way to acknowledge that Japanese civilians didn’t deserve the brutal violence from atomic bombing, but the Japanese government themselves also were not a helpless victim of war. War was horrible and it has lots more nuance and repercussion even just from a single event. It’s not just about white US bullying asian Japan. I guess unfortunately in the era of social media and bite-sized information it will be much harder to convey that.
