Synopsis: it's the dead of night and for some reason, Shattered can't sleep. There isn't any particular reason why he can't, but his mind makes him anxious to check on the twins.
Enjoy
It was quiet in the void as the little family had retired for the night. Of course, in a void, there was no real concept of night and day. But the several clocks, that the two older skeletons had set around, gave some illusion of time. Otherwise one would surely go mad with no concept of it.
It had been another long and tiring day. Luna had thrown up on Shattered repeatedly and despite him being covered in gloop already, it was very unpleasant.
Shattered didn't think that Cross' daily baby chores could get any worse as he wiped the gloop and stomach bile off himself for the 5th time. But he was wrong as it was then that Cross had asked Dream to assist him in giving the little ones a bath.
It had been chaos.
Shattered has found himself bombarded with bubbles, warm water and squeaky bath toys as well as an anxiety ridden dad next to him the whole time.
"is the water too hot!?"
"no! That's too cold!"
"not that much!! Are you mad!? They'll drown"
After dealing with those initial obstacles, actually getting the twins to behave as he cleaned them was all the more worse.
They
Would
Just
Not
Keep
Still.
There had been tiny tentacles flying everywhere and even with his own Dream was hardly a match.
It frustrated him thinking about how he'd slipped fallen face first into the water at several points, as both of his daughters giggled and their father was trying not to snigger behind him.
Cross hadn't been laughing so hard when he got a face full of watery gloop.
In the end he resented the fact that he'd ever agreed to help. It was humiliating, tiring and just stupid to him.
Although, as much as he hated to admit it, seeing the care Cross took when drying them off in fluffy towels afterwards made his heart melt. Seeing someone so brash and rugged be so tender and gentle, was a sight he'd not forget. He'd had to excuse himself for a while, as his soul had bit back painfully.
Now though, the twins had been put down to sleep, nestled between Owly and several of the cows. Such chaos in the day.... Such peace at night.
The only sound in the room was of the clock slowly ticking in the corner. Everything else was quiet and still. A simple cot sat a few feet away from the double bed, in which lay the pare of skeletons.
One was fast asleep in an awkward position with his face smushed into the pillow beneath him. The other was wide awake and staring upwards. Listening.
It was the silence keeping him awake.... It was just too quiet.
