It’s wild to me to see transvestigator conspiracy theories online that could be so easily explained by natural human variation. That woman has a deep voice? Yeah, sometimes they do. A woman has broad shoulders?? Maybe she plays rugby or hits the gym a fuckton. There’s a “bulge” in her tight pants?? Maybe her vulva is just fat. All the “markers” of trans woman that transvestigators use to harass any woman aren’t even things unique to trans women.

Transphobes talk about women like they’re Barbies. Have you forgotten the existence of cameltoe? Tiny boobs? Narrow hips? Broad shoulders? Why do you think choirs have altos and not just sopranos? What do you think female athletes look like? Do you think a woman that lifts weights and plays contact sports will look like a 90s supermodel? At what point in history did we collectively forget that human bodies have natural variability???

Twitter user StrangerJosh11 says in part of the very thread where he shares these statistics that he thinks the Department of Education should be dismantled. He is using these stats as part of his argument for dismantling the DOE!

If that wasn't enough to call for some grains of salt, the source of the statistics is some place called the "National Literacy Institute" (the Twitter thread is just screenshotting that webpage) and there's no citation or information on how the data was gathered.

Obviously, we're in an unenviable situation when it comes to literacy and critical thinking. But the problem may not be shaped quite the way we'd assume taking the screenshots in this post at face value.

the reason this doesn't work is because hypocrisy is a virtue for reactionaries; it means you have the power to create rules for others you do not have to follow yourself, and that is the goal of all conservative politics

the lesson I'm taking away from this election is not that the Democrats need to become more left wing or more right wing but moreso that they need to find a way to cater their rhetoric towards people who genuinly have no idea what is going on. the target audience for every speech and political appearance should be someone who doesn't know what the three branches of government are because they were drawing a Cool S during high school civics

I remember my mom explaining the Carter administration to me once, and said that it was her opinion that Reagan won because he was able to say “I’m not gonna let an energy crisis prevent me from driving my car!”

Like Carter may have been “right,” and pragmatic in the way he handled that, but Reagan made people feel like they could do what they wanted, which seems to be the average American’s concept of “freedom.”

It turns out people really really like the protections and support they get from the Affordable Care Act but don’t like “Obamacare” which anyone who is even mildly informed knows they’re one in the same.

What republicans have mastered is controlling a narrative, and democrats like being “right,” more than they like winning elections, so idk what to do about the fact that what almost everyone is saying is “I don’t make enough money to live the kind of life I want,” and republicans have used that to turbocharge the spiral into fascism by saying that’s because of immigrants and trans people.

I haven't been sharing much about the election, for my general mental health, but I think this one hit the nail on the head for a lot of it.

The average voter is incredibly ignorant of how the government works, the separations and limitations of the powers of any individual actor, basic facts like how much of high prices is actual economics vs corporate greed, or that most changes and improvements take time and aren't anything close to immediate quick fixes. Nor do they understand how complicated just about any issue is.

Also keep in mind that your body flying through the windshield is not just a fatal YOU problem; at that point your body becomes a projectile capable of hurting others. It is irresponsible from a public safety standpoint to not wear your fucking seatbelt.
