Honestly the best piece of advice I can give to younger girls trying to figure life out is to completely ignore men. I’m not being quirky or cute when I say that, I mean it seriously. Ignore men’s judgments of you, ignore their insincere compliments, ignore their half-assed romance. Focus on developing yourself. Practice your art, play sports, do theater, volunteer, spend time with your friends, but do not put substantial effort into pleasing men. They’ll be there for you to pursue when the time comes and if you want to. But nothing will waste your youth more than fighting for male acceptance.

gyaru coordi help!! i don't know what to wear in the winter for bottoms... its gonna get very cold here and snow so i don't think shorts are a good idea... but i also don't want to wear just boring jeans all the time. help? :'(
Well first of all I apologize for the slow response ;-; . I actually wrote a pretty detailed and lengthy response then my internet crashed :( So this will pretty much cut into the point. You can wear shorts and/or skirts in the winter! What you want to consider when making a winter outfit, more than anything is the fabrics and how you can layer them. Winter fabrics are like so (I even made this little swatch diagram ;-; ) :
Where more often than not, you’ll be wearing something made up of one or more of these materials in the winter. Gyaru, will usually wear skirts/shorts + light tights (or no tights) + winter fabric socks *optional* + winter fabric featuring boots/shoes (like suede or leather)
How high you wear your socks, how high your shoes/boots reach, whether or not you wear tights under your socks, or you even wear socks should be decided on an individual day-by-day basis, according to the areas where you feel you most need to keep warm. Most of the time, you’ll see otk socks use or otk boots.
Brands like dazzlin, especially are featuring winter bottoms/one piece dresses made up of tweed, suede (like the pictured overalls dress) , leather, velvet (boots) , cotton etc.
Let’s say you actually do want to wear pants /denim though . You can invest in ripped/sheared denim, loose “boy-fit” denim pants, mixed fabric denim pants, etc not just plain jeans. This will allow for more creativity to your winter outfit. DIY allows you to do a number of things with jeans that can really help it to work better with an outfit. Honestly, getting a variety of pants and jeans may help alleviate this feeling of boringness . Simple pants will make simple outfits (simple can still be quite beautiful though ).
Leggings under skirts/shorts can still be worn. Consider the look you are trying to pass off when deciding what legging is best. Images courtesy of tokyofaces
DIYs:
Note: You can wear tights under your sheared/cut/torn jeans for an added dimension and warmth. You can DIY or buy yourself some patchwork skinny jeans which may add something interesting to your outfit as a whole. I recommend buying cheap jeans to DIY on, or you can pay like 135 USD at Nastygal or ~400 USD at Neiman Marcus for Acne patchwork jeans.
I kid, but you get the point. The worst that can happen is you have to buy another pair of jeans. Overall, when it comes to winter wear you’ve got to layer or if you’re going for denim and you don’t want a ‘simple’ look, there’s got to be something more to the denim. Zippers, chains, sheared, dyed, bleached, patched, and so on. This will add something interesting to them, and your overall look if they all connect and balance each other out. Hope I kinda sorta helped S:
hi~ I love your blog! ^^ I was wondering, I've worn gyaru makeup before, but I'm a little anxious to post pictures because I have dark brown eyes and I can't wear circle lenses (I have an issue with my eyes that makes me unable to wear contacts, they're really painful). I've heard so many people say that you NEED to wear lenses to be gyaru..What do you think? (&thank you for your time ^_^)
Thank you!
I think that with contacts, the look is extremely easier to achieve. Without lenses, it can be a little more difficult, but still possible. If it’s for a health reason, don’t worry about it, we don’t want you risking your health and safety just for a style! But what you can do is make sure that every other piece of your makeup is put together perfectly.
Japanese Gyaru example:
Mayuchibi without lenses still looks undeniably gal. She has her hair on point, her foundation, blush, lipstick/gloss, highlight/contour, and lashes are all perfect. The only difference between this and what she currently wears everyday is the lenses. But it still looks gal.
Gaijin Gyaru example:
Pin always looks over the top gal, even without lenses. Her hair is always amazing, her coords are to die for, and her makeup is always right. She’s always got perfect contouring, highlighting, her eye makeup is always amazing.
Lizzie is another gal who even without lenses, looks flawless everytime. Every bit of her makeup is perfect: her lashes, blush, contour, lips, etc. Her coords are also undeniably gal.
So to answer simply, gal can be done without lenses, but you might need to go above and beyond what girls with lenses are wearing just to make sure that you look gal. I recommend making sure that you have thick top and lower lashes, blush (that’s actually visible), contour, and lip color to go along with it. With lenses, you can get away with less contour, less lashes, less blush, etc. just because the eyes are larger. So don’t be afraid to wear gyaru, just make sure that everything else is perfect.
If there’s something more specific you want to know, just message me!
XOXO
Waaah thank you so much for using me as an example! >3<
what is your job? i mean do they let u wear gal to work.
I’m preparing to start training next year in radiology and pediatric diagnostic imaging through the United States Air Force. Naturally, in a medical career, gyaru is simply not appropriate, especially in the strict military environment. I am going to take this question as an opportunity to teach a bit, though, if you don’t mind!
Now, I firmly believe that gyaru in the workplace outside of my specific situation is acceptable, if executed correctly. You simply have to tailor your personal style to stay within the outline of your workplaces regulations! I have everything under a readmore, because this is pretty picture heavy.
Do you have any tips for those wanting to dress more gyaru and get in the scene of it?
Hello! Sorry I didn’t get back to you any sooner… Was trying to figure out the best way to reply.Basically if you want to get into Gyaru then I’d suggest you do your research; not the light sort of the research, but deep research. Look at all of the different substyles, download as many magazines as you can, and properly read them. Even if you don’t read Japanese the pictures in the magazines do explain quite a lot of what’s going on. After you’ve done a lot of research then you could start experimenting. When I started out I tried out a makeup or hair tutorial a week, calling it “weekly gyaru meme”. This is a great place to start as the more hair/makeup tutorials you try, the easier they are to do and you can discover the right ones for your face or eye shape.
I would suggest doing those two things first before venturing out into the gyaru community or “get into the scene of it”. Tag your posts as gyaru-inspired and ask for some con crit, and remember to not be easily offended and listen to other people’s advice.
Once you feel more confident you could join some gyaru groups on FB or try and be more active on Tumblr. Make gyaru friends, and they could help you develop! You could even run a blog if it helps. That’s what I did anyway.
In terms of dressing it, I try to dress gal every day by wearing casual gyaru-kei during the week and then full out gal on a weekend or when I go to a special event. The more you wear it, the easier it becomes, and the better you get! Look at styles like onee gyaru for casual daily wear or gyaru-kei. You might need to build up your wardrobe to dress it everyday so at the beginning you could just wear it on the weekends until you get more items.
Remember to always keep your eye out on clothing trends as gyaru is all about being fashionable! And remember to have fun, too :D
If you need any more advice feel free to message me
Have you got any tips on how to make fake eyelashes look natural? :3
Well it’s all about choosing the right lashes really! I’d go for the more “fluffy” kind instead of the spikey, dramatic lashes. You could also tone it down by wearing natural makeup and just using mascara on your lower lashes.
Dollywink are really good for natural lashes as well as melliesh, both of which you can get on eBay :3 I hope this helped!
“Can I touch your butt” in Elvish.
This is so useful
No, this is not “Can I touch your butt” in Elvish. This is “Can I touch your butt?” in English, transcribed using the letters of the Elvish alphabet. There is a difference.
In Elvish, the letters of the alphabet correspond to sounds, not to words. The above text spells it out using one symbol to represent one letter of the original English, which is incorrect:
- c-a-n i t-o-u-c-h y-o-u-r b-u-t-t
If you really want to spell out an English phrase using the Elvish alphabet, you would do so phonetically, which would basically equate to one symbol per phoneme (sound):
- c-a-n a-i t-u-ch y-o-r b-u-t
If you actually wanted to write “Can I touch your butt?” in Elvish, one (very rough) translation would be:
- Annog nin daf pladan tele ci?
Which, in Sindarin Elvish, roughly translates to, “Would you give me permission to touch your rear?”
Written in tengwar (the Elvish alphabet), it would look like this:
Sorry for the blurry quality.

hi, this week where i live is tax free week for shopping and i've saved up a lot of my $ to go shopping and i'm hoping to buy lots of new clothes for back to school. i want to spend my money on some nice clothes for the fall/winter but i'm the type of person who always ends up buying summer clothes even during the winter and here it snows and gets VERY cold so i don't want a repeat of all my past shopping trips :'( i don't have many clothes as i gave them away so i'm basically starting from scra
scratch this time and i have to admit i’m really not good at knowing what i should buy (ex. i have like no pants at all lol and i buy too much gray clothing that washes me out so basically i just can’t shop/style clothing to save my life) i was wondering if maybe you could give me a few recommendations about what i can buy for fall/winter or what i should look for or what staples i NEED to buy? i’m not necessarily looking for anything crazy gyaru but just clothing thats in style. ^^
Yeah I understand what you mean and I’ll do my best to help!
Fall/Winter staples:
1. Overcoat Item(s) :
- at least 1 trenchcoat/coat: the colors navy, black, beige will go with the most outfits (If you want to be ‘up-to-date’ so to speak with fashion trends oversized coats are in). If you don’t feel like catching up with the trends one that cinches in at the waist line, is your best option.
- 1 denim jacket or 1 military jacket or 1 varsity jacket or 1 leather jacket (faux leather) : This is moreso for fall than winter. It starts to get chilly but not coat weather. These three items are currently in, but I feel the military jacket and leather jacket are more ‘timeless’ pieces than the denim jacket and the varsity jacket. The common colours are washed out light blue for the denim and the forest green for the jacket, black for the leather jacket. Adding blazers may make a nice touch for the fall as well.
2. Sweaters (pullovers)/Cardigans:
- At least 2 sweaters (pullovers). At least 1 knit (regardless of size) and 1 non-knit. When it comes to the non-knit design it can be anything a floral print, a text based cotton print, whatever, but the base colour (the one appearing the most ) should be black, white, navy. This is for the sake of being able to match it with pants, or demin when it really matters. Knitwear is usually a solid colour so it really doesn’t matter what colour you get. A non-knit pullover like this:
can be worn with virtually any basic pant/denim colour. However, if you buy a sweater and decide you’re going to wear pants that ‘match’ some of the colours it has on it — a mint green pant for example using the print above— you are cutting down options on what you can wear with it. So I would recommend buying for certain items, only after you at least have some of the basics.
- Cardigans : mehh, ehhh oversized cardigans can make interesting silhouettes. You can get an average sized one, but I think having it single coloured is best, whatever that colour may be. If you find you love cardigans, just buy them all and opt out on the military jackets/denim. Basic colours I would rec are obviously grey, black, navy, white, beige or a rich dark maroon.
3. Bottom(s) :
- Pants : Any style (flare, straight, skinny) .Any length. I personally prefer them to be slightly above the ankles and I roll mine up, but you don’t have to buy those kinds, it’s the colours that are important. Once again, the basic colours should be black, navy , white (optional). Then you can expand with different textures and designs : tweed pants, plaid pants, etc. The colours will be whatever is to your liking, but really for winter, if you’re not really having to look professional for something , you’ll probably stick to denim.
- Denim(s)/Jeans: Any length. Any cut style (flare, straight, skinny, etc they all could add personality to your outfit) The most important thing is colour. Always have at least 1 black denim pant, 2 blue denim pant (one light, one dark), *optional* white pants or grey pants. They work well with a lot of outfits but you should consider your surroundings.
- Skirts/Shorts : It is still possible and not really rare to see people wearing skirts / shorts in the fall/winter season. To wear them requires a certain amount of layering to keep you warm. I would say, for the winter/fall consider adding skirts/shorts to your wardrobe LAST. That way you have a good idea what you can wear with them and you can mentally coordinate your outfits and see if they would be appropriate.
4. Top(s):
- For layering and nice colour effects at least a white, black, and/ or light blue button up shirt. Most of the time, these will be worn under the knit sweater or pullover or the jackets/coats. It adds a cleaner look to your outfit, even if you wear it with a skirt or shorts. You can get them at a pretty good price from Uniqlo. Most gyaru brands will have some sort of button up top as well. If the design is complicated/interesting then I wouldn’t recommend putting it under a pullover/sweater. Whatever the design shows, is a reflection of what you like and your personality, so wearing it with either a jacket or coat would be more appropriate. You take the jacket or coat off in class and you wear the top visibly.
- Long sleeved shirts (meh might as well grab a couple) You can wear them under regular t-shirts (a la jouetie’s styling), to add a layer of warmth. However, in doing so, you already start a more casual coordinate look , so combine fabrics and textures appropriately.
5. Onepiece :
- You can wear dresses during the fall/winter. You’ll probably be layering under them and/or over them, with either the button up or the pullover sweaters. This is where you can combine a simple light blue button up long sleeved shirt under a more complicated dress design, such as this one from Emoda,
And have at least the top of that dress stay warm with a pullover sweater such as this dazzlin pullover
+ Black tights, boots, bag, accessories and add a winter coat ( if too cold ) over it, and you basically have a very mode winter outfit. If black tights don’t keep your legs warm, you might want to layer over it with black otks.
6. Misc :
- Don’t forget hats, gloves, scarves, ear muffs if you’re going for that look
- 1 Tights, 1 stockings, 1 ankle socks, 1 over-the knee socks (I would rec them all in black since that’s easiest to match items with as a basic )
- Boots - Depending on whatever look you’re going for chelseas, wellingtons, ankle or high boots, heeled or not, it should go with your personality, so you choose :)
Always shop with intent!
1. Know what style/look you are going for (that will narrow down your search so that it’s like grocery shopping with a list, fast , simple.) You can do this by:
a. Exploring styles/look concepts you like (aka the ‘street’ style , modern/minimalistic styles , romantic styles etc). Once you know what style you want to encapsulate you buy items that will fit.
b. Looking through magazines, circling/scrapbooking all the outfits you basically want and finding them 1st in cheaper stores near you 2nd if unavailabe there the actual store.
As I tell my little sister, when you pick up an item, you should be able to make at least 2 simple coordinates with it in your head based on what you already have in your closet. If you have trouble making a couple simple coordinate with it off the top of your head, it’s probably not worth the investment. Since you buy clothes to wear them :PWith your style chosen, be able to describe it with at least 5-10 words. For example: Mode gyaru - Geometrics, Bold Font, Minimalistic, Basic Colors, Silhouettes . Those keywords should help you determine if an item you’re interested will fit with the style you like, even if it’s not from a ‘gyaru’ store. If you can at least fit 2-5 of the descriptors with the item then it’ll go with the style. The only question is if you have things to match it with ;P.
Consider whether the style requires a more warm colour scheme or a cooler colour scheme. If it requires a warmer colour scheme like winter ank rouge or winter liz lisa, basics should not include navy. The addition of beige or maroon should take navy’s place. An ofset white might be better than a pure white. And black goes with everything lol. If it is a cooler colour scheme like winter murua / emoda the usage of bold colours means navy, white, black, and a bright blue would be the best additions.
Like I said, patterns, textures, fabrics, etc should be chosen after you have most of your basics. You should choose the style of pants, the colours, the over all designs based on your body shape, personality, etc.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match these patterns , textures, fabrics. It could be interesting. This is all after you’ve got the necessities though . I should stop rambling. Good luck D: I hope I helped some D:
Current trends I picked up in the gyaru world for A/W 2013 :
- Minimalistic tops with Simple Text
- Long (Knee-length) Pencil Skirts
- Military Jackets
- Denim Jackets
- Simple All Over Print Tops (Flowers, Stripes, Polka Dots, Cars)
- Oversized Coats
- Circle/Round Sunglasses
- Overall Style dresses/Strap Dresses
- Overalls
Once again, Hope I helped ! :) x
How to draw folds
Notes on how to draw folds back when I was teaching manga classes back in 2006. From the book “Drawing people” by Barbara Bradley.
This book has a very detailed description of 6 types of commonly seen folds and I think is one of the most educational resource on how to draw folds(Besides Vilppu and Bridgeman).
Hi!! Do you have any idea what to wear to a job interview that's still kind of gyaru and not totally boring? :D
I think for that you’ll have to derive inspiration from onee gyaru (sometimes even an onee x agejo styling — pictured behind the read more) and mode depending on how professional you want to come across as in this interview. I’d choose onee styling for something like a desk job, something that requires me to have a personality lol. Mode for something big, where a facade of 100% professionalism is required etc. But I don’t know how casual or professional it is :
Something like this would probably be safe for both:
Is what I would consider a safe job interview outfit. It’s still very trend conscious (boyfriend suit jacket, high waisted pants, the colour way, etc) but is still conservative. I think the colours being light will help you to stand out in their memory against whatever backdrop of colours others are wearing. It’s refreshing, but still serious. That’s why it’s safe.
Safe clothes styling would be a look like the second row here:
So what would you say is gyaru? Like circle lenses + eyelashes? Like if you do that then you are gyaru? x: not trying to hate or anything I'm just confused haha
It’s okay xD I think there’s more to the look than simply eyemakeup or makeup in general. When I say styling, that also means hair styling and clothing styling/co-ordinating. These are also necessary in identifying another gyaru. I say identifying because honestly, no one can tell you if you are a gyaru or not except yourself. What other people can do is acknowledge you as having the gyaru look (as agreed upon by more than yourself) so more like confirmation. You can look gyaru, but not consider yourself one (Xiaxue for instance). You can also consider yourself one, but find that people don’t think you have the look yet. Brand items are part of the physical cues of identifying another gyaru, but is not all there is to being one.
On top of physical things like makeup, knowing how to put clothes together, and hair styling, that helps a person identify as gyaru. The general outlook and attitude on life. And well, that’s not readily available to most people unless they talk to you, so visual cues are primarily used. The attitude definitely exudes confidence, and a sort of free mindset, where one feels free to do what they want, dress how they want, and be whatever kind of gal they wish to be, sexual, conservative, etc. I hope that makes sense.
To me personally, if you call yourself gyaru, I basically accept it. The individual may not be the best, by my ~idealised image of what a gyaru should be ~, but if it’s something they are passionate about, I know they will and exceed that. I find that the individuals who accept constant growth and feel like there is more to learn and work on, are the ones that grow to excel in the style. Will I offer help and support? Only if they ask, if someone wants to grow on their own, then that’s fine by me as well.
I know that when people have differing perceptions of what gyaru is, and they tag it under gyaru, then anon hate arises. The anon is just using up energy over something that doesn’t affect them. The gal may not have lashes, or contouring, but if she’s serious about the look she’ll incorporate them at her own pace. Even if the anon is concerned about the western gyaru ‘looking bad’, then they should use that determined attitude to teach rather than discourage, or just ‘up’ the western gyaru image by showing how it’s done. However, it is my personal belief that in that case, they care far too much about what other people think of them if they are worried about girls who are new to gyaru tarnishing the western gyaru image. Just do your best and help when someone asks for it or if you can. Everything else is subjective, preferential, and/or opinion based.
I think I got off topic lol
Do you mind explaining this Gorgeous Barbie? What exactly does she do and Can she be trusted? I looked at the fb page but I feel like I'm missing some information...
I haven’t ordered from her, so I’m not familiar with the process, but there are a lot of western gals who follow me who have ordered from her….I’ll see if I can dig up their blogs. This is a question they’re better suited to answer :P
If anything, she seems to operate as an independent shopping service. It’s more personal since you can message her.
Lizzie’s a sweetheart and has ordered from GB, so she can help explain the process/whether it’s good/how it works better than I can :
Sui Princess has also purchased from GB :http://suiprincess.tumblr.com
I recognize others but I can’t find your blogs for the life of me D’: Roll call, anyone who has purchased from GB and can add input. For the most part, she seems reliable, people have taken photos of their received items/parcels and there is no complaints about the quality or condition received. You probably have to pay her a SS fee like any other SS.
Be a selfish bitch.
Don’t feel bad for going after what you want.
Do that shit on your own fucking terms.
Hold a middle finger up to anyone who puts you down.
Wear what you want.
Do what you want.
Worry about yourself being good before anyone else.
Life life to the fucking fullest.
You run you.
You paint your own damn masterpiece.
Never fucking forget that.
Go on, girl. You better do it.
