One of my favorite stories growing up was The Snow Queen. I loved how Gerda had to embark on a series of adventures to rescue her childhood friend Kai.
I know Disney did Frozen as a loose adaptation and it's a huge success and people celebrating the love of sisters etc. I love Disney as much as the next person but I am so glad my first exposure to many of the stuff they do was the original via my reading. It makes me appreciate story telling and that everything does not always have to be perfect. The Little Mermaid for example devastated me but I always went back to it...the tragedy of it all teaching me a valuable life lesson. The Disney one while very cute, still in my mind cannot really replace the message/themes of the original.
Same with Frozen in a way. I didn't exactly need to have Kai replaced by a sister because I read books which celebrated strong female characters and sisterhood/female friendships like Little Women, Heidi, Anne Of Green Gables, A Little Princess, etc. It was rare, however, to read the girl save the boy. But I get what Disney wanted to do and it worked with great success. However I really think Gerda's doing it by herself...I recall how many obstacles and how arduous her journey was and yet she soldiered on.... is more powerful and I love this story. It can never be replaced for me.
I hope parents will pick up the original story for their kids. It would be a shame if kids who love Frozen never get to read The Snow Queen. Never get a chance to experience the story that was kinda ahead of its time in terms of feminism and which birthed a blockbuster.
