[Image Description: 9 generation 1 My Little Pony characters, all smiling and holding pride flags in their mouths. Parasol holds a rainbow flag, Flutterbye holds a lesbian flag, Wind Whistler holds a trans flag, Napper holds a nonbinary flag, Boysenberry Pie holds an intersex flag, Dazzleglow holds a pan flag, Brilliant Bloom holds a bi flag, Gardenglow holds an asexual flag, and Star Hopper holds an aromantic flag. The ponies are backdropped by a pastel rainbow gradient, a white grid, and white hearts. End ID.]

I wanted to try another pride ponies piece with more detail and work on it - and hoo boy here it is!! Had fun but it took longer than intended. Happy pride!

Nothing to see here, just hosting these photos on my blog so I can ask the folks on the pony forum why these two versions of the same pony are COMPLETELY different colors if that’s not caused by internal metal washer rust. (The hair is supposed to be different colors and green hair Napper has a cute little cloud on the side of her cheek you can’t see, so clearly I needed both of them😅)

But if you know, I don’t mind hearing about it here too! Is she yellowed, or is this just standard dye lot variation?

Baby fell asleep in the sun and buuuuuurned! Or she lived with a smoker.

Oh no! But thank you! She doesn’t smell smokey at all. Do you know if hydrogen perixide cream and UV fading will help? There seems to be some debate on if it works on sparkle ponies. Even heard someone say they oxi clean makes their plastic turn cloudy? That one seems far fetched to me. I just oxi cleaned a rusty Starhopper and she looks fine. Washed her with detergent after.

@dollsonmain might have advice on restoring the proper color

Nope.

I have retrobrighted clear vinyl with peroxide before and it turned opaque white for a while before going back to being clear but it’s also possible that Napper variant is just supposed to be orange in which case you wouldn’t want to do that.

No looks like yellow is right.

Hm. It could be dyed or unstable vinyl.

I’d suggest setting her in a sunny window without adding any chems for a while and see if that helps though it could also be the cause of the discoloration.

By a while I mean like… a few weeks.

Hee hee, I’m cheating because I saw the post as it went up on the forum! I would have originally claimed smoke damage too, because it has that nicotine stained look!

The answer turned out to be: there’s a known issue with the plastic they made the sparkle ponies from, and some sparkle ponies discolor terribly as they age, like this poor Napper! Doesn’t matter about smoke or sunburns, it just - happens! (Not to discount that this couldn’t also happen from smoke or sunburn, of course.)

Of course, as much as I trust people on the Arena, this is really just collector heresay; but it makes sense, since Hasbro has done the same thing with various lines. There’s plenty of purple ponies (Seashell, flat foot Blossom) who just randomly turn white/lose their purple, and then some other purple ponies (rainbow Windy!) who SOMETIMES lose their purple, and sometimes don’t!! Hasbro had multiple factories as I understand it, so it’s entirely possible that one factory simply used a different batch of plastic, or messed something up, and that made SOME of the sparkle ponies go fucky-wucky.

Who knows!! Pony science is imprecise and ever shifting!!

Yep, the Sparkle ponies are prone to yellowing.  Napper in particular seems to be bad for it (or maybe it is just more noticeable on her?).  I’ve seen Napper’s who have discolored to a deep caramel, the color of Coca Cola.

Here’s a picture of Star Hopper with a “true” colored head and a discolored body.  Far more common to see her discolored than not.

I don’t know what makes them discolor . . . Could it be some kind of stabilizer?  Given that the G3 sparkle ponies “devour” their sparkles, yet G1 sparkle ponies don’t?

Napper brought Countdown into the kitchen, “Hey, want to make some homemade jam? It’s about time you started to learn how to cook!” Countdown licked his lips and nodded in agreement, and started with bubbling fruit on the stovetop and a fruity scent wafting through town. Eleroo took a whiff in with his trunk and ran into the kitchen, “Can I help?”.

Eleroo started working on some apple chutney, and then Birthday Bear as well tumbled into the kitchen!!! Seems like the entire neighborhood wanted in on jam making! They worked hard all day and made big ol jars of jam, and even added some jam in between some cake! How yummy- and even yummier with good friends!

Star Hopper seems to have been drawn with white hair a lot of the time in the UK comics, which is interesting considering only the yellow-haired version was sold in the UK.  The white-haired version was mail order only.

However Napper is drawn with purple hair, which is her store version.  (Mail order version had green hair.)
