I’ve talked about this a bit before, but when the MLP collecting fandom first started emerging online, the MLP & Friends cartoon was not well-remembered. Not “disliked”. But literally hard to remember. Barely anyone had recorded it on VHS and Youtube didn’t yet exist. The legit VHS tapes were rare. Also, the cartoon only lasted two years; the G1 toyline lasted 10+ years. So most ponies were never in the show.
All these elements carried over to early fanfiction. People just wanted to tell stories about their childhood favorites doing cool stuff, having epic magic battles, experiencing interpersonal drama, and Struggling To Survive.
So you’d read one fanfic and Glory would be the queen, you’d read another and Glory was the male love interest, you’d read another and she was a snobbish pony who got her comeuppance … It was really interesting and fun seeing the toys treated as blank slates where the authors would scribble a unique personality onto them and build a one-of-a-kind world around them.
I wonder if any other fandoms had that kind of fanfic? It was different from the usual AU, because those are usually a purposeful departure from canon. This was more like, “Canon? I don’t know her.”
Returning to this to say it seems like 2000s Littlest Pet Shop had a similar vibe where people created their own lore. Maybe even moreso since most pets don't have official names.

Hasbro has given Basic Fun the license to make Littlest Pet Shop! (LPS was originally owned by Kenner but Hasbro bought Kenner in the late 90s.) Very exciting! The press release mentions 90s LPS and 2005 LPS . . . I feel like 2005 style is more likely if they only do one, but perhaps they’ll do both.
I remember the bobblehead style being so popular back in the day, my niece had like 50.
The 2012 Littlest Pet Shop cartoon is really cute and fun--underrated cartoon IMO. It also stuck me how it handled its characters compared to the MLP Core 7 era.
“Core 7″ was when Hasbro rebranded MLP at the end of G3 + during G3.5. They focused on seven characters, each with their own talent to make little girls relate to ponies: singer, painter, fashionista, etc.
Similarly, all the LPS pets had their own specific hobby. They aren’t identical to Core 7 MLP--like LPS has a comedian character and a magician character--but some are similar. Like Rainbow Dash and Zoe the dog are both fashionistas, Toola Roola and Minka the monkey are both artists, etc.
Littlest Pet Shop handles its characters better, though. With Core 7, each pony’s personality WAS her hobby and their only other personality trait was “generically nice.” (This was especially noticeable with Rainbow Dash, because they undid the aspects that had previously made G3 Rainbow Dash something of a diva.)
But Littlest Pet Shop gave its pets different personalities and let them bounce off each other. Zoe the dog, the fashionista / singer, is a diva. Sunil the mongoose isn’t just a magician, he’s a glass-half-empty type of guy. Russel the hedgehog, like Pinkie Pie, is a planner, but unlike Pinkie Pie his friends get fed up with him from time to time and are like: hey stop.
It’s too bad Hasbro didn’t have the guts for more conflict in the Core 7 era because it’s not hobbies that make kids interested in a slice-of-life show, it’s the interpersonal drama. The hobbies are just there to make the interpersonal drama happen, like the diva accidentally ruining the artist’s painting and trying to frame someone else, or whatever.

I just started rewatching the 2012 Littlest Pet Shop show and, man, it’s just really cute.
