All the ponies, all the time!

Ivy, Ivy, Ivy, and Ivy hanging out with Berry Bright, Berry Bright, Berry Bright, and Berry Bright.

G2 was the first time Hasbro really tried to "brand" certain MLP characters, as in "reintroduce them as toys again and again."

This really was not a thing that happened in G1; at most you might get Firefly in one year and Firefly-with-curly-hair the following year. But you would never have two Fireflys released in the same year. (Baby ponies don't count, they were separate individuals compared to their mommies, even if they looked similar.)

And even then, repeated characters were just not common. Let's look at Sundance. Quintessential pony, right? Had a whole special centered around her clumsiness. Was the special pony pal of Megan, human star of the specials/TV show.

Versions of Sundance ever produced: 3. Regular, So-Soft, and Twice-as-Fancy. Over a span of 5 years.

So when G2 started releasing the same ponies again and again, most collectors were rather baffled. G3 also had its core rereleases--Sunny Daze, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Sparkleworks, Minty, etc, until it devolved into the Core 7, where only seven ponies were being released at ALL. G4 is also rerelease based, though nothing near Core 7, thank the pony gods.

I mean, I get the strategy. Rarity and Twilight Sparkle are on the screen every week and that generates a desire for the toys. At the same time, even as a child I didn't really "get" why there had to be six different versions of Batman and eight versions of each Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle for sale at the same time. I wanted ONE Batman--the one that looked like Batman, dressed in grey and black, not "Scuba Diving Batman" or "Sky Dive Batman" in blazing, saturated colors.

Seriously, dude? Neon orange?

I would not have wanted five Moondancers in my herd, even though she was my favorite pony, because I wanted to "collect them all", not "collect the same ones over and over."

MLP: All Generations

A size and style comparison of all four generations.

Of course, actually there is a lot of range within generations, especially G1 which had ponies bigger than the ones shown (Big Brothers and the oddly large Precious Pocket ponies) and smaller (newborns and Teeny Tiny ponies). But this gives you an idea of the average.

Pinkie Pie, on the end, is a Fashion Styling pony. Fluttershy is the "regular" size brushable G4.

I don't have any baby G2s or G4s, which is why they aren't included. :) Also don't have any G3.5s.
