Vengeance of Alderaan Fanfic

Several times this year, I’ve tried writing a Fanfiction story idea set after the Return of the Jedi. I keep trying new ideas, but some central concepts remain the same. One version was narrated by R2-D2, which was hilarious, but I wasn’t sure it quite fit what I wanted. The story centers around Leia attempting to balance her life in the New Republic Senate with her growing Jedi powers that have become somewhat chaotic. Here is a small section that I tried writing (again) tonight. Hope you enjoy!

“You need to be calm,” Luke said. He and Leia were standing in a clearing in the forest on Dagobah.

“I am calm,” Leia objected. A particularly large lizard chirped from atop a log behind her. She pointed her blaster towards it, and shot without looking. The poor startled creature leaped away into the safety of the trees.

Luke sighed, and held out his hand. Leia gave him the blaster sheepishly. He set it down, then directed her attention back to a large boulder in front of them.

“Try again,” he said.

Leia closed her eyes. She reached out her hand, shaking, towards the boulder. All of a sudden, the boulder shot straight up into the air. R2-D2 gave a startled yelp and backed away. “Focus,” Luke said calmly. He reached over her shoulder, and tried to steady her hand. “Think about bringing the rock back down to the ground.”

The rock came slamming back down into the ground so hard that it left an indent in the earth. When the dust had cleared, and they had both stopped coughing, Leia sat down on a fallen tree branch in frustration.

“It’s no use,” she complained.

“It’s okay—you just need to slow down a bit,” Luke reassured her, sitting down next to her, “I didn’t do well my first time, either.”

R2-D2 gave a whistle of agreement.

“I don’t know,” Leia said.

Luke rose, and held out his hand to her. “Let’s try to do it together,” he suggested. He glanced around the clearing for something a little less destructive. He spied a smaller tree branch across the clearing from them. “How about that tree branch?” he asked, pointing towards it.

Leia rose hesitantly. Luke closed his eyes, and extended his hand towards the branch. The branch began rising very slowly. Leia reached out her hand, and closed her eyes.

“Careful,” Luke cautioned, as the branch wobbled. He opened his eyes, and lowered his hand. “Now, bring it back to the ground,” he instructed her.

The branch came down towards the ground slowly. “You’re almost there,” Luke said, keeping his voice level, “Just—“

His voice broke off abruptly. A look of pain crossed his eyes, and he held onto his head.

“Luke—“ Leia said, alarmed. She opened her eyes and turned around. The hapless tree branch shot off into the forest like a spring, nearly hitting the lizard who had had quite enough of their presence there.

R2-D2 rolled over quickly, and Luke put a hand on R2’s head to steady himself. “Luke,” Leia asked, “What’s the matter?”

He seemed unfocused. “I don’t know,” he said. She helped him sit down on the fallen tree branch. He continued staring straight ahead.

“R2,” Leia said, watching his face closely, “Go and get Han.”

The droid protested loudly.

“I saw...” Luke began, suddenly, “I saw a Death Star.”

Leia frowned. “But, that’s impossible,” she said, “Both Death Stars were destroyed—“

Luke shook his head slowly. He looked towards her, and his eyes seemed clearer, “It had the New Republic insignia on it,” he said meaningfully.

Leia looked away abruptly, a mix of surprise and anger on her face. “No one on the Senate would…” she began. Her voice trailed off, suddenly.

R2-D2, uncertain if he should still go and get Han Solo, whistled.

“I’m all right, R2,” Luke reassured him. He looked at Leia, who had a look of realization on her face. “What is it?” he asked.

Leia rose abruptly. “The Alderaan Peace Star,” she said, barely above a whisper.

“Leia?” Luke asked.

“I asked them what the proposal they were drafting was for, and they reassured me that it was just a kind of monument to commemorate Alderaan,” Leia began, enraged.

R2 whistled cautiously as two trees behind her began to shake. Luke watched them warily, and rose.

This is the kind of thing that the Senate does behind my back? Recreating that monstrosity?” she continued in disbelief, “We’re trying to rebuild after the Empire… not become it!”

One of the trees shot into the air. Luke gestured imperceptibly towards it, and it landed harmlessly in a clearing behind them. “I’ll go with you to the Senate,” Luke said, taking her hands in his, “We can find a way to convince them.”

Leia looked at him quietly.

“Hey, listen, I like flying trees as much as the next person,” Han Solo began. He came down the path into the clearing, looking around in an unimpressed way. “But not when they almost land on my ship,” he added, pointing at Luke accusingly.

“Sorry, Han,” Luke said apologetically. “We’re ready to leave,” he added.

“Already?” Han asked, faking surprise, “I guess you’re a natural, Leia.”

She glared at him, and stormed past him down the path. “What did I say?” Han asked innocently. Luke shook his head quickly, and followed Leia. R2-D2 followed Luke, giving Han Solo a sympathetic whistle.

Yoda Knows Luke's Anxiety

(Contains spoilers for Episodes 4-6)

When Yoda and Luke first meet, Yoda tests him to show Luke's impatience. But, Yoda also reveals that he was watching Luke for his whole life, meaning he already knew that Luke was impatient. So, why did he test him? Because Luke's impatience is coming from his anxiety. Yoda wants him to know the dangers of letting his fear control his actions.

From Yoda's perspective, Luke just nearly got killed by the Wampa, then almost got killed trying to flee the base on Hoth, and then crash-landed his ship on Degobah. He had a rough few days, to say the least, but Luke still isn't thinking about the danger to himself. He's driven by anxious thoughts to find the Jedi Master and start training.

Yoda takes Luke to his home, and tries to get him to slow down and be present for just one moment. It's pouring rain outside, and yet Luke is still impatient to leave and go find the Jedi Master.

Yoda knows that Luke is in an incredibly dangerous state, where his anxiety drives him to act without thinking of the danger he could be putting himself in. And, he knows that Vader will try to exploit that aspect, which Vader ultimately does by threatening Han and Leia.

Luke's immediate response to his anxious feelings ultimately does cause him to go and face Vader too soon. Much like his failure inside the tree, he reacts quickly without considering the danger.

Luke confidently states: "I'm not afraid!" to Yoda. And Yoda's response is simply: "You will be."

It makes Luke's return to Yoda in ROTJ more meaningful. When Luke confronts Yoda about his father, he becomes defensive at Yoda's response. Yoda quickly makes it clear that he cares about Luke, and that he didn't want him to carry that burden.

Luke had been so focused on the physical aspects of the training, that he hadn't realized that Yoda was trying to help him control his anxious thoughts, not to be a better fighter, but to protect him from his father's manipulation.

Yoda doesn't have to tell Luke about his sister. In fact, since Luke has started to become drawn to the dark side by his father, it would be safer if he didn't know.

But Yoda chooses to tell him, because he knows that Luke needs her. Not for training or anything like that. But because Leia was the only person who could confront Luke's anxiety.

Luke wouldn't calm down and stay with Yoda in his house. But, Luke chose to stay with Leia aboard the Rebel ship and let Lando and Chewbacca go in search of Han Solo.

Usually, Luke's anxiety would cause him to go straight after Han Solo, one hand or not. But, he doesn't. He stays with Leia.

It makes you wonder: when Obi-Wan said "That boy is our last hope" and Yoda countered with "No; there is another", was he referring to Leia being able to defeat Vader?

Or, was he referring to Leia being able to confront Luke's anxiety?

This is a Mark Hamill Appreciation Post

This is an appreciation post for the boy who saw Donald Duck’s voice actor on TV and thought: ‘I want that job!’

For the teen who wanted to be a part of making movies in any way possible (even if he became a caterer!)

Who took as many acting jobs as he could while still keeping up with college classes.

For the young man who was excited to be cast in a TV series only to have it canceled after one season.

Who didn’t give up on his dreams.

Who went and auditioned for a role in a new movie. And got the part. And was astonished to find out that he was playing the main character.

Who traveled around the world to film one of the most beloved films in history.

And a sequel.

And a third movie.

All the while continuing to act in other projects, both in films and on Broadway.

Who brought such a sincerity to his character that people couldn’t help but be moved by him.

Who is a genuine friend to those around him.

For the man who loves his fans, and always tries to bring hope to them:

Thank you.

Our Galaxy wouldn’t be the same without you.

Lego shorts

I've found so many hilarious Star Wars interviews from the 80s on YouTube, so I started using the remix feature to make little Lego shorts using the audio from some of my favorites. (Hopefully I'm using the remix feature correctly. I wasn't sure how it gave credit to the original video's owner, but it seems that you can click on the audio and it will take you to the full interview!)

I've only done these 2 so far, but it's been very fun. Who else is counting down the days to Lego: Rebuild the Galaxy?

I feel like a sequel to Return of the Jedi would probably start a few months after the Battle of Endor, but I like to think that it would pick up in the early morning after the big celebration between the Rebels and the Ewoks. The last embers of the campfires have died out. Everyone has fallen asleep wherever they were. Han Solo is asleep, sitting against a tree, with one snoring Ewok near his head, and another one holding onto his foot. Princess Leia wakes up, raises her head, and sees Wicket sprawled atop the log that she had her head against. Everything is quiet and oddly peaceful, with the first golden tint of dawn just appearing in the sky.

Luke has left the camp, and is sitting by a small stream. He removes the glove from his right hand, and sticks his hand into the water. He holds it up, looking at the open wiring still visible from where it got shot during their escape from Tatooine. He folds up the glove, and puts it into the water, watching as it floats away. Then, Princess Leia comes to find Luke, and they go back to the camp together.

Mark Hamill directs + plays Space Invaders + stage fright

I just came across these two interviews (the 1st video has some non-related, extra commercials and stuff from the 80s at the end). Both of these were appearances on ABC's program 'Kids are People Too' in the 1980s.

The first one has Mark Hamill playing a hilarious game of Space Invaders against the current champ of the 80s.

In the second one, Mark shows off his director skills by directing a small play between acting students.

I appreciate the part of the interview where he shares that he has stage fright, as well as some of his tips for overcoming it. I know a few years ago, in an interview, he mentioned doing breathing exercises to help calm down before going on stage.

The fact that he thought that it was just him (the stage fright) until meeting other actors who felt the same way...

It's a good reminder that we're never alone.

Do u think Anakin's still into engineering in his Vader era

Like when there's a problem w his ship and his technicians are struggling to fix it does he ever show up like 'get out of the way' and start repairing the problem himself

Luke’s Poncho

(Contains spoilers for episodes 4-5.)

This is kind of a random post, but the other day, I realized something about the brown poncho that Luke wears during the first movie. I wrongly assumed that Luke bought the poncho from the Jawas who wanted his landspeeder, just before boarding the Millennium Falcon. However, the deleted Tosche Station scene shows Luke wearing the poncho, meaning that it is something that he has had for a while.

The poncho disappears for a while aboard the Millennium Falcon, but reappears near the end of the film, when Princess Leia drapes it over Luke’s shoulders to comfort him about Obi-Wan’s death. The poncho is the only thing that Luke has to remember his home planet by.

I realized that a parallel of the poncho is used in the ESB as a call back to that scene from the first movie. In ESB, when Lando rescues Luke, and brings him to Leia, Luke is wrapped up in a brown blanket that is similar to the poncho. It’s a little detail that brings so much symbolism to that moment. Leia’s reaction to immediately embrace Luke shows how far they’ve come in their friendship since the first movie. Luke is feeling completely vulnerable, and has finally reached out to Leia for help.

The brown blanket continues to be shown in the following scene, when Leia is helping Luke.

What do you think? Is the detail of the brown blanket meant to remind viewers of the scene with Luke’s poncho from the first movie?

Give Mark Hamill Some Support?

A while ago, Mark Hamill announced that he's going to be in a new movie that hasn't yet been announced. He's been so excited about it. Earlier today, he tweeted about it, saying that it takes 3 hours to get in costume, and that he's really enjoying playing the new character.

If you follow him on Twitter/X, you probably know that he gets pretty political sometimes. I recently saw an interview from a few years ago where he was explaining that he does get kind of political on Twitter, and that if you disagree with him, you're not his enemy, you just disagree.

He's gotten much more involved with politics this year. I don't agree with a lot of his political opinions, but I appreciate that he doesn't really belittle people or attack them for their views. He likes to talk to various politicians and leaders online, but for the most part, he likes to keep his interactions positive.

This year, he's gotten a lot of hate from people online. It started out as political disagreements, but now people are making it more and more personal. On his tweet from this morning, about the makeup and being excited, people have been calling him ugly, making jokes about him being unrecognizable, etc. There are so many hate comments.

If you have Twitter/X, would you consider going and leaving a positive comment for him? I hate to see him so excited about something, especially when he's been having a harder time in the recent past, and people jumping on to try and hurt him.

May the Force be with you.

Some Notes for Star Wars Writers

The dark side is not freedom, it’s not pleasure, it’s not happiness. It’s a hell and a slavery you get so deeply enmeshed in that you don’t even see the torment or the chains.

The balance of the Force is not the dark side and the light side being equal, it’s the balance between the Living Force and the Cosmic Force.

The Jedi do not need to be reformed or changed. While individual members can be flawed, the goals and beliefs of the whole are good and right.

Historically, the Mandalorians were assholes who were responsible for multiple genocides. This is important to remember when writing their interactions with the Jedi.

The Jedi did not attack first at Galidraan, nor did they intentionally set out to kill the True Mandalorians. They were manipulated by the governor and Tor Vizla. Jango didn’t exactly try to calm things down, either.

THE JEDI ARE NOT BABY-STEALERS.

ATTACHMENT IS NOT LOVE.

Catholics and Star Wars

You’ve probably heard this joke before:

Star Wars: May the Force be with you.

Catholics: And also with you!

The only thing about this joke is that Catholics don’t say ‘and also with you’ anymore. We haven’t since 2011, when we got the new translation of the Mass into English. Now, we say: “And with your spirit.” Which, combined with “May the Force be with you” honestly sounds really cool.

“May the Force be with you. And with your spirit.”

I think it’s kind of cool that several Star Wars cast members were Catholic. Most notably, Sir Alec Guinness was a convert to Catholicism. His conversion story is really, really cool, and I encourage you to Google it and read it. According to some sources, he read this verse from Psalm 143 every morning:

“Let me hear in the morning of thy steadfast love, for in thee I put my trust. Teach me the way I should go, for to thee I lift up my soul.”

And, along with Sir Alec, there was another Catholic among the Star Wars cast: Mark Hamill was raised Catholic. (He’s mentioned it on Twitter a few times, although I don’t know if he’s still Catholic, or was just raised Catholic.) I’ve seen some Catholics on Twitter telling him that they chose St. Luke as their confirmation saint because of Luke Skywalker (St. Luke is the patron of physicians).

Sometime, I might do a post analyzing some plot elements of Star Wars from a Catholic perspective. For now, May the Force be with you (and with your spirit)!

How Vader Calls Luke’s Bluff

(Contains spoilers for episodes 4-6.)

Recently, I saw this Instagram short where George Lucas explains something crucial about Luke’s vision on Degobah:

It’s true. If Luke hadn’t taken his lightsaber with him into the tree, he wouldn’t have had to fight.

Even in the fight with Darth Vader on Cloud City, Luke draws his lightsaber first. He creates the situation where he has to fight, without first trying to negotiate with Vader.

This realization caused me to consider something that I’d never really thought about before, and it led me to understand the importance of a scene from The Return of the Jedi.

The scene? Luke meeting Vader for the first time on Endor.

To the audience, it might seem like Luke is doing all the negotiating during his talk with Vader. He’s trying to convince Vader that he knows that there’s still good in him, and that he can turn away from the Dark Side. Luke references Vader’s inability to kill him on Cloud City as an example of why Vader is good deep down.

Vader, in the meantime, counters in a way that I never realized before. He takes Luke’s new lightsaber in his hands, and makes a big deal out of looking at it. He tells Luke that he sees that he’s built a new lightsaber.

Previously, when I saw this scene, Vader’s comments about the lightsaber seemed funny to me. It felt sort of like a typical dad admiring his son’s handiwork. But, what Anakin is trying to imply is much more serious and sinister.

It never occurred to me that Luke didn’t need to bring his lightsaber with him to face Vader.

Luke was insisting that there was good in his father. That he could change him. He even tells Vader that he himself will never turn to the Dark Side, and that Anakin will be forced to kill him.

When the stormtroopers brought Luke to Vader, they handed Vader his lightsaber. The moment that Vader took the lightsaber, he knew that his son, however much Luke might claim that he had faith in his father, had built and brought a weapon to defeat him.

Luke’s being tempted by the Dark Side of the force, and he’s wavering. His fear and temptation in the tree on Degobah foreshadowed this moment. He didn’t need his lightsaber to face Vader, but he brought it. If he hadn’t brought it, the Emperor wouldn’t have been able to tempt him with it. He wouldn’t have had to fight Vader. He has again created a situation in which he will have to fight his father.

When Vader turns on Luke’s lightsaber, Luke looks back at him with this look of fear and realization. I never understood why before. It’s because Vader is calling Luke’s bluff, saying without words: ‘Well, if you really think that I’m good, why did you bring a weapon?’

Later, during their fight, Luke says that he won’t fight his father. He says this repeatedly, even turning off his lightsaber. At that point, Vader tells him that he is unwise to lower his defense and strikes, and Luke reacts instantly, drawing his lightsaber again.

Even though Luke is telling his father that he won’t fight him, he still won’t let go of the lightsaber. If he had let go of it, Vader would have been forced to make the decision of hurting his son or refusing to hurt him. Luke knows, because of Vader cutting off his hand, that his father can hurt him. He’s afraid. He holds on to the lightsaber.

That’s why, when Luke stands up to the Emperor, he takes the lightsaber, and tosses it away. That’s why that moment solidifies that he won’t turn to the dark side. Because Luke has chosen not to fight his father ever again.
