The Art of Letting Go (1/?)
Ben Tyler had spent his life making sure everyone was taken care of, at the cost of his own dreams. When he meets the Doctor, she offers him another life, one of freedom among the stars. But she has her own burdens, buried in a dark past.
Gender swapped Whoniverse, featuring Catherine Tate as the Ninth Doctor and David Tennant as Ben Tyler, her companion. Billie Piper will be the eventual Tenth Doctor.
Rating: Teen (to be safe, honestly I have no idea) Genre: adventure, sci-fi beta: the ever lovely, patient, and extremely put-upon rudennotgingr
This story was inspired by foreversam13, who runs the pink-andyellow blog that has the amazing Billie!doc gif sets.
Chapter 1: Ben
5 am
The alarm clock blared to life, and Ben Tyler opened one eye to stare at it blearily for a moment before reaching out to slap it back into comfortable dormancy. He sat up slowly, yawning and scratching at his head, before pushing off the covers that had somehow wound around his legs in the night. Once freed of the bedclothes hindrance, he quickly donned his running gear, stretched for a few minutes, before heading out the door for his obligatory four-mile run.
6 am
Ben stood in the shower, chest heaving as it did sometimes when he couldn’t quite outrun everything, the losses and responsibilities. After a moment, he swallowed hard and pulled himself back under control, raising his face to the steaming water again before turning it off and stepping out into the cold bathroom. He shaved and made his defiant brown hair somewhat presentable before returning to his bedroom to sort out his pinstriped suit for the day.
6:30 am
"Oi, Tom," Ben yelled through a closed door, kicking it as he buttoned the cuffs on his Oxford button down. "Six thirty a.m., mate. Up and at ‘em!"
"Get stuffed!" a voice growled back.
"Not really my type," Ben said back easily. "But if I ever change my mind you’ll be the first to know. Til then, you have work."
"Work can get stuffed too," Tom called back, his words punctuated by something hitting the door.
"Well, rent can’t," Ben said practically, tying his tie. "As much as I love our morning banter, I’ve got my own job to get to. Please tell me you’ll get up."
The door opened and Tom glared up at him. “You know, you are entirely too coherent and chipper for six thirty in the morning. In my world, six thirty in the morning wouldn’t even exist. There shouldn’t be more than one six thirty in the day.”
"I know," Ben said, walking back to the kitchen for coffee. "You’ve never really been a fan of reality."

The Doctor discovers Candy Crush
Rose knew that something was up when he wouldn’t let her look at his phone.
Three weeks, and when he didn’t forget it completely, he complained about carrying it with him. “Rose, you’re the only one who knows this number, and we’re always together!” he would complain. “Why do I need a phone?”
"Emergencies," she would always reply firmly. "Remember the Flover incident?"
Now, however, she always saw him on it- and whenever she tried to see what he was doing, he would block the screen and yell “No screen peaks!”
Rose had no choice but to wait while he was asleep, and it took her three nights to figure out his password- tardis didn’t work, neither did rose or timelord or doctor. Eventually she found out it was forever, and she had to blink back a few tears before she investigated his apps.
His internet history revealed nothing out of the ordinary, and recipes weren’t anything to be ashamed of; he was actually very good in the kitchen. It was when she noticed that there was another page of apps when it ended on the second one that she found her answer.
The Doctor had discovered Candy Crush.
She loaded the app and realized that he was only on level eighteen, and from the number of lives clearly having trouble with it. She had to walk into the living room and laugh herself silly for a while, before she quietly walked back into their room and replaced the phone as if nothing had happened.
The next morning, however, she ran to the local store before he was awake, and she was able to snap a quick photo of the expression on his face as he stared at the very familiar looking candies in front of his usual chair.
"But… how… there’s a password!" he exclaimed, distraught.
Rose ran her fingers through his hair. “That game is addictive love, I don’t know why you’re so ashamed of it.”
"I’m not ashamed," he sniffed, then pouted. "I’m a Time Lord Rose, I should have beaten it by now! But that level eludes me!" he whined.
Rose shook her head. “Leave it for a few days and come back to it. In the meantime, Dad called. Said he needed our help in Australia.”
The Doctor perked up. “Oh really? What is it this time?”
"The southern lights aren’t looking right. He suspects there’s alien involvement."
"Count me in," he said happily, and within moments he had completely forgotten about the app.
Next week, however, he was right back at it- this time stuck on level twenty five.
