Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

Might I add:

The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how they’d be to be executed

The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child

The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship

The adventures of a space roomba

Cinderella finding Araura (and falling in love)

I don’t know a snappy description but the my nemesis cynthia story certainly lives in my head

I am in love with you /p

What about the one with the princess locked in a tower learning to become a wizard? That’s lived in my mind for years and I haven’t seen it in a long time

“Humans, as humans say, do not go gentle into that good night. Worse, they do not go gentle into bad nights, worse days, or terrifying sunsets. Dawn seems to fill them with potency and rage…”

A few more for good measure:

And additional stories as collated by inkvoices in another reblog chain, so I can have them all in one place:

And more for the road! I'll add future stories here, rather than reblog this every time I come across a new one.

sick and tired of seeing these ace trainers brag about their super smart badass level 100 shiny mons.

This is Sol. She is a fucking idiot. She regularly forgets that she is a flying type and sits at the bottom of cabinets n such crying cause she doesn't know how to get up. I would die for her.

I don't know where it came from, but several years ago this idea popped into my head unbidden, and for some reason it tickles me. I don't know if it's funny, but I like it and I made it into a zine, I hope you enjoy it.

It lays out really nicely as 3-up spreads on A4 paper, so you can print, staple and fold it, then cut it into 3 zines. It made it really easy to print up 20 of them to trade at this art social thing I went to

I have a temporary tattoo pen, which theoretically means I can have two week long "tattoos" of anything I want, but practically means that I rarely draw anything on myself because I'd be stuck with a drawing mistake for weeks. BUT, I have just done proof of concept that I can cut out a stencil and then use that as a crutch AND Baby I'm back in business. SO, I thought, hey lets follow a theme because suddenly I feel like taking advantage of all this skin real estate AND sure I've got a beautiful image of insects and flowers BUT It's Halloween Month Baby! and so I am doing FROGS. AND Suddenly I know what i want to be for Halloween. I want to be FROG FACTS GIRL. It'll be lazy but also visually effective. I'm going to wear a frog hat and a frog dress and have frog fliers with all the native frogs and toads. No nail polish because I always pick my nail polish and it is gross to eat. (possibly frog shaped treats?) Alternatively I could add in some other classic "spooky" animals but I have my hands full with frogs... but like bats.... (bats, cats, toads, newts, snakes) But that is too many things. BUT if I follow this, I can have a THEME every two weeks or month of the year. I kind of want to get ahead of myself and pick something appropriate for November but that is probably not conducive to thinking about now. Tho it is almost November, so if I do frogs now I will be stuck with them into November.... Should have thought of this a week ago.

It's because GRAY is a West Saxon word for the quality of light, while GREY is an Anglian word for everyday objects. And everyday objects are typically earthy, warmer, or more neutral.

To explain: West Saxon and Anglian are both dialects of Old English. West Saxon was the politically dominant dialect, but Anglian was the more popular spoken dialect. So a lot of Old English texts are written in West Saxon, but what we know as Middle English and Modern English descended more from Anglian because it was spoken by more people.

So grey (the Anglian word) shows up when authors are describing everyday stuff. Like in this sentence describing a grey beard from Holy Boke Gratia Dei: "The hed of Petir is a brood face with mech her on his berd and that is of grey colour be twix whit and blak."

Any Middle English text you read, you'll find Anglian grey is the word the author prefers to describe everyday things. Grey wool, grey feathers, grey stones, grey horses.

By contrast, gray (the West Saxon word) shows up when authors are describing the qualities of light.

A gleaming gray sword, a deep gray lake, a misty gray morning, cold gray marble, sad gray eyes. Like in this sentence from The Siege of Jerusalem: "They glowes of graie steel that were with gold hemmyd." More often than not, gray describes an impermanent or glimmering quality of light.

There's even an instance where a Middle English author uses both, and you can see how one spelling is more about the quality of light while the other is more about the color of the animal: "The cerkyl or the roundel off the eye ys sumtyme graye lyke the ey off a catte, sumtyme blak grey lyke the eyn off doggys."

("The circle or round of the eye is sometimes gray like the eye of a cat, sometimes black-grey like the eyes of dogs.")

The reason Americans use gray and not grey is because Noah Webster hated the English. :)

so freakin cool

Very interesting to learn the origins of these two spellings!
