so i was re-watching the pilot of gossip girl today because that was back when the show was actually good and i realised something about it, and that is that the scene towards the end of the episode when chuck is forcing himself on jenny is so overlooked, by me as well as other viewers of the show i feel. yes we don't know how far chuck would have gone if dan and serena hadn't arrived, but he was forcing himself on an underage, naive girl who was all alone at this party. and the scary thing is that i feel like if he had gone all the way and sexually assaulted jenny in that first episode, then people would still defend him (if that had happened, their were no consequences until a later season and the whole chuck & blair storyline still happened) and that freaked me out because people seem prepared to defend his character for anything, and i honestly think they still would even if he had raped jenny. changing as a person doesn't excuse all your actions from the past, and apologising to blair doesn't excuse all the things he's done to her, and the fact that the writers of the show think it is acceptable to have blair saying that his darkness is HER fault is so incredibly ridiculous, when it clearly came forth before he was even involved with blair. blaming his abusive tendencies on his love interest is sending out the shittiest message ever, and it just worries me that i think people who like his character would still defend him even if he had raped jenny.
