Hello, all! ❤

My mother has spent the last few years compiling a scifi/fantasy benefit anthology for the Ukraine, with 100% of the proceeds going toward relief efforts for the cause.

Anyone who is interested in science fiction, fantasy, supporting humanitarian efforts, or helping out a local artist who spent a lot of sleepless nights on this particular labor of love, please consider giving it a look, requesting it at your local bookstore, or even just leaving a supportive review.

Thank you so much! ❤

Hello, all!

We find ourselves at a funny little crossroads today. There is officially an HBO television adaptation of Harry Potter in the works, one with a clearly stated commitment to open casting that could create an inroad to character representations aligning with a great many fans' longtime hopes and dreams for Harry and Hermione especially. Ten years ago, this would have been everything we could have ever hoped for in this fandom. Today, news of this new television show cannot bring joy.

The movie adaptation has brought many book fans a great deal of frustration over the years (hence the creation of this blog); while being greatly beloved by an entire generation, it simultaneously dropped the ball in many areas focusing on characterization and worldbuilding. And yet the faces of that film franchise - the actors of the main trio especially - have been invaluable voices in the public struggle to push back the flood of anti-trans rhetoric free flowing from JK Rowling's social media accounts.

On the other hand, we finally have a long-form adaptation of the series on the horizon, but it comes less than fifteen years after the end of the original movie series and therefore inevitably falls into the exhausting position of being yet another franchise remade too soon. And most importantly, of course, the main and inescapable effect of its creation will be lining the pockets of a woman who has been actively and enthusiastically supporting bigotry against women - both trans and cis - in society and in politics.

There have been rumors that Warner Brothers is trying to buy the rights to the entirety of Harry Potter from JK Rowling, and if true, it has to be admitted - ironically, given the nature of this blog - that I hope they succeed. If the choice is between lack of artistic fulfillment in the portrayal of a fictional world or real-life financial support of a woman actively making the world a more dangerous place for vulnerable populations, there is only one choice to support.

A few years ago, I started writing a detailed post that was a general post-mortem on our collective fanship of JK Rowling, and never completed it due to general feelings of exhaustion, disgust, and feelings that it was redundant. But briefly:

Many years ago, JK Rowling made a post on her personal website about her portrayal of Aunt Marge's bulldogs. She was dissatisfied with how she had written them, because she hadn't known a lot about bulldogs at the time and hadn't taken the care to portray them in a way that did them any justice. While she meant no harm, she's since learned better and wishes, in retrospect, that she had portrayed them differently.

When I think about JK Rowling, I think about that post a lot.

Even before her newest and most outspoken TERF era, even prior to all of the issues involved in the Fantastic Beasts spinoff series, JK Rowling wrote a beloved children's series that was seen as highly progressive upon publication but also contained a number of elements that have aged, shall we say, very poorly. Some of these were markers of the time when Harry Potter was originally written - many things from the 90's have aged badly - and some of them are down to the personal ignorance of the author, whether or not you assume that ignorance came hand-in-hand with malicious intent.

She could have spoken out about this if she wished - you know, like she did with the fucking bulldogs, to say that she had no ill-intent at the time but that would write these elements differently today if she had the chance - but as far as I'm aware, she has not. In fact, despite having endless wealth and resources at her disposal now, as opposed to the original start of her writing journey as a single mother scribbling ideas on cafe napkins, her portrayal of delicate issues of things like race, gender, and sexuality in her writing has only gotten worse.

The 'JK Rowling was always a secret conservative' rhetoric is strong, especially on Tumblr, and while I understand it, I genuinely think that it is misguided. The woman spent most of her life voting in favor of and speaking out for leftist and progressive politics. We (progressives) are not immune from propaganda, radicalization, or being raging fucking bigots. However she votes now, whatever idiots she is friends with now, the call very much started from inside the house on this one.

So, to circle back to the original point of this post:

This new HBO television series, in a best-case scenario, could take all of the tone-deaf sociopolitical issues with the original novels and fix them. It could take all of the creative issues with the movie franchise and fix those too. It could give us a diverse cast and tell an emotional story that does credit to what so many people held dear about the book series while growing up.

(I doubt it will, but it could.)

And yet this would still be a thing that on some level brought me no joy, because at the end of the day, it would also be putting pallets and pallets of cash into JK Rowling's pocket as she continues to dig her way down the conservative rabbit hole instead of fixing any of the mistakes of her early writing career.

Gross.

An HBO television adaption of Harry Potter is apparently in the works.

….This would have conceptually been thrilling news even five years ago, but even putting JK Rowling’s support of anti-trans conservative legislation and other issues aside, it’s only been a decade since the movie series ended.

Surely it’s ludicrous to reboot it this quickly?

I’m re-reading the Harry Potter books and it’s funny how much Harry and Hermione are vying for Ron’s attention (in contrast with the movies). Don’t get me wrong. Harry and Hermione are best friends too. But it’s obvious that Ron is their favourite.

The rejection of traditionally masculinity in the HP book character designs is a worldbuilding feature that would beautiful to see on screen. Dumbledore with flowing flamboyant robes, 28-year old Lockhart in vibrant punk robes, 35-year old Sirius with long tousled hair who dresses relatively casually - they're all GOOD character designs. Instead, the movies give both Sirius and Remus hideous moustaches and facial hair, dress them formally - the opposite of how they're depicted in the books. urgh

Hello,

The loss of the unapologetically magical aesthetic, even if it was at times played for laughs, does truly hurt the vibe and look of the films, I agree!

yk, i feel like Harry Potter would honestly reach its peak if it was an animated t.v. show

Hey there,

I think that's valid! For quite a long while I vaguely wished that the studio behind Avatar: The Last Airbender would take a crack at it.

the fact that the stupid fucking movies gave both Sirius and Remus facial hair always makes me want to laugh because like.. the two male characters LEAST likely to have ugly ass moustaches and beards ... now have them. LMAO. (but honestly, Sirius fucking Black looking like THAT in the movies is so genuinely bizarre THE LEAST THEY COULD DO WAS GIVE HIM LONG BLACK HAIR)

Ahhh, you mean your mental image of the Marauders didn't include massive walrus 'staches? ;)

Why do people blame Steve Kloves more than David Yates for the butchering of the HP movies?

Hello!

At a guess, a fair amount of this comes from the fact that "writer" is a pretty self-explanatory job, whereas the influence a "director" has on a project is a bit more vague?

Of course, depending on the industry and the individual project, the writers, directors, and producers can have more or less of an influence on the finished product, but at least with the Harry Potter series, we know that:

1) Steve Kloves was around before David Yates ever joined on, and the problems with the films did not begin with Yates's arrival, and

2) I'm pretty sure Kloves was the one who said that Hermione was his favorite, and we all know how that ended up.

Can you do a full Book Harry appreciation blog ? I rarely see him getting appreciated for his selflessness , talent and also wit (like for example he was the one who figured out about the ravenclaw horcrux and the three deathly hallows) . Please it's a request (as he is my fav) . Thank you :)

Hello there!

Apologies for the lateness of this reply - life has been rather busy and this blog fell a bit behind in priority, I'm afraid.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to give this ask the attention it deserves at the moment. And it DOES deserve a bit of love, because book!Harry is funny and emotional and brave and selfless and sometimes a very dumb teenager but always in a way that struck me as realistic and understandable.

My thoughts on Harry Potter Movie duels.

Ok, so this is not going to be me just ranting on about how “David Yates ruined wand combat”.

I am actually going to dissect what I think makes a GOOD wand battle in the Harry Potter films, and what later on made them bad. Because I think there is a steady decline that one can actually see if you look hard enough, and I am intrigued to see your guys’ view!

So! here we go!

Things that really should have been in the Harry Potter films

-Hermione actually having bushy hair and large front teeth

-Ron making the jokes, not being the joke.

-Hermione having personality flaws

-Sassy Harry (the ‘pincers’ scene was not enough…)

-Rupert Grint being allowed to play Ron how he was in the books (i.e a three-dimensional character, not a comedic sidekick and walking punch-line)

-No-one else but Hermione fancying Gilderoy Lockhart.

-Ron’s obvious irritation over Hermione’s said crush on Lockhart

-Winky

-Peeves

-James, Sirius, Remus and Peter being the Marauders, and making the map

-Ron standing up on a broken leg and telling Sirius that if ‘you want to kill Harry, you’ll have to kill us too!’

-Hermione and Ginny not fancying Cedric Diggory (Why was this even put in the films?)

-The actual Quidditch World Cup final

-Ludo Bagman

-Ron being upset with Harry because he thought Harry had done it without him, not just because he was jealous

-Ron not leaving Hermione crying on the staircase at the end of the Yule Ball

-‘calmly

-SPEW

-Ron not saying ‘I’ll go easy on you’ to Hermione. (Noticing a pattern here?)

-Charlie Weasley

-Ginny Weasley having a personality (Bonnie Wright, you deserved so much better…)

-Hermione and Ron both being horrible to each-other during the whole ‘Lavender’ debacle.

-Four words- ‘Weasley is our king’.

-Harry and Ginny having a relationship that didn’t make you wonder whether she slipped him love potion. These scenes were so weird to watch…

-Dumbledore’s funeral

-Ron and Hermione comforting each-other during the funeral

-Both Ron and Hermione saying they would stick with Harry on his quest for the Horcruxes (I don’t care if Rupert Grint was ill with swine flu when they were filming, they could have easily edited him in later!)

-RON DANCING WITH HERMIONE AT BILL AND FLEUR’S WEDDING RECEPTION! This was a massive deal for their relationship development, and the film-makers threw it out the window in exchange for a ‘Ron still can’t ask Hermione to dance’ bit!

-Ron leaving because he was worried about his family, and thought Harry didn’t care, not just because he suspected Hermione was snogging Harry (FYI Kloves, this wouldn’t have been necessary if you had written the golden trio as they were in the books, instead of trying to force your own OTP into the scripts)

-Harry and Hermione being barely able to talk without Ron around. And no out-of-nowhere dancing either!

-Dobby being present in more than one film before he returned to die.

-Hermione finally kissing Ron because she realised how much he had matured as a person (he remembered the house-elves when everyone-else forgot), and realised that she couldn’t go another moment without letting him know how she felt. Not because they both go soaked in the chamber of secrets after destroying Hufflepuff’s cup (that scene made no sense, and was so uncomfortable to watch, and I’m a Romione shipper, for crying out loud!)

-Voldemort’s body not changing into magic dandruff and disappearing into nothing. This misses the point of his death entirely.

-Harry fixing his own wand with the Elder Wand. If he was going to break it, he could have at least fixed his own first.

-Not sure about this one, but did Ron even get a line in the ‘nineteen years later’ scene in the films? Because if he didn’t get to say his ‘I’m extremely famous’ line, I am throwing up on my laptop in rage.

-Also, Ronald Bilius Weasley getting some freaking RESPECT and NOT being made into a figure of fun for non-Potterheads to laugh at!
