Hana-Rawhiti Kareariki Maipi-Clarke, the youngest MP in Aotearoa, starts a haka to protest the first vote on a bill reinterpreting the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi
Goes insanely hard
To provide further context from what I understand the bill wanted to take the rights guaranteed to the Maori in said treaty and expand them to all New Zealand citizens. The issue with that is that it sort of defeats the point of the protections of the treaty.
Here is Te Ao Māori News reporting on the protest.
Breakdown of what the Treaty of Waitangi and the proposal to reinterpret it means.
Reblogging this to be a bit sappy, because I am really proud of Aotearoa as a country for their response to this bill. Because this bill fucking sucks. Like so much. Fuck David Seymour.
But at the same time, there has been such an outpouring of opposition to this bill- from both Maori, Pakeha and non-nzers. There is a hikoi (protest march/convoy) moving up (or down if you're pakeha :p) the country towards the capital. It's not even half way, and there were 10,000 people estimated at the event in Kirikiriroa/Hamilton. It is shaping up to be the largest hikoi of the generation.
I was at an activation in my city and it was incredible, to see so many people there! I was in a sea of people, and just completely surrounded by Tino Rangatiratanga/Maori flags. Just a sea of them all through the crowd. And that was one of two simultaneous events in my city.
All of this is to say that power can be resisted.
In the last election, Aotearoa voted in its most conservative government for a good while. Granted, USA conservative is on a different level to NZ conservative, but everything within its context right?
And the good news is- that this bill will almost certainly fail. Yes, it passed its first reading because National (our big right wing party) is the worst and promised that in their coalition agreement and so they've decided to waste more taxpayer money. But they have now repeatedly promised to vote this bill down at second reading. Which means that 5 of our 6 parties in government have promised to oppose the bill at second reading (3 of those parties are left wing and 2 are right wing).
All power can be resisted. Nothing is over until we let it be over.

Also just a quick shoutout to Willie Jackson a Labour MP (roughly democrat equivalent aka big centre-left party) who was ejected from parliament for refusing to withdraw and apologise for his statement (its against parliament rules to call another member a liar)
Also if you want to see the lead up, as well as the pleasure of watching the speaker, Gerry Brownlee look very uncomfortable you can watch this.
