In all those shows, who was there in the main event? Because it sure as hell wasn't Roman Reigns!
I know the two of us have only just met, but it's very unwise to go where you're headed right now.
do you think that i've forgotten about you?
Thoughts on the dub?
Honestly? Better than I expected. I tried to temper my expectations—not because I hate dubs or have zero faith in them, but because I feel the voice acting in NatsuYuu is critical in making the emotional bits land. And it's not so much as replicating the voice actors as it is just doing a natural-sounding delivery.
I think overall, the dub did a good job at achieving that. There were several moments when it felt stiff or heavy handed, but the voice acting sounded natural when it needed to be, so I can appreciate that.
Christopher Wehkamp's Nyanko-sensei or Master Kitty Cat as the dub seems to be calling him was my favorite performance. I can tell Wehkamp had fun voicing him, and the role really showcases his range.
The weakest performance from the episode, I think, was by Jennifer AuBuchon as Touko. I feel bad saying that because I've been told she was very excited about the role! So I'm rooting for her to get better as time passes since it's not the sound of her voice that's not working for me.
Alexis Tipton did wonderfully as Reiko so I'm excited to hear more of her during future episodes.
As for Adam Gibbs as Natsume... I was honestly really worried about his performance! After the dub was announced I hunted down clips of his other roles to give me an idea of what he could sound like as my dearest boy, and the clips I heard sounded pretty stiff,,, His voice was a lot lower than I had expected for Natsume, but he had this like whisper-ish quality which I thought was reminiscent of how Natsume sounded in the Japanese. I suspect that's one reason why he might've gotten cast. At the time, I remember thinking, "oh god I hope the ADR director pulls through," but Gibbs' Natsume sounded natural for the most part, so I'd say she did! Thank you Jad Saxton.
And shoutout to Alexis Tipton, who did a wonderful job as Reiko. I'm looking forward to hearing more of her during future episodes.
…even dead, i’m still the hero.
Meddling when you don’t have to is the essence of being a hero.
You might spend years trying to figure out who a Cancer really is, because there’s so much that goes on beneath the surface with them; you can never truly know them.
He’s a repellant man. The worst of the worst. But if lives are at risk and you tell him you really need his help…just leave it to him, and everything will be okay.

I don’t know if you guys are interested but I think because of the Funimation and Crunchyroll merger, there might be more undubbed anime getting English dubs. Would you guys be interested in that, and do you think it’ll help Natsume Yuujinchou grow its western audience? PS - all love and good health to all of you!
Not everyone can do subs, so yeah, a dub would certainly boost NatsuYuu’s Western audience. Although I don’t think a dub alone could increase it by a noticeable amount. Many people are highly resistant to dubs, after all. I guess it’d have to depend on how much it gets promoted. And maybe when Netflix is finally able to stream the anime outside of Japan, there will be a wave of new fans.
But Yes. I would LOVE an English dub. Despite my major concerns about who they’d cast as Natsume, I think it’d at least be worth it just for Nyanko-sensei. He would sound hilarious in English because he kind of like Danny Devito…
Plus, if we get an English dub, it could lead to the anime getting a Spanish dub. I really want to watch the anime with my mother, who barely speaks English.
I wasn’t aware seasons 5 and 6 didn’t get released on DVD or Bluray, but that’s just depressing. NatsuYuu deserves better orz
Yeah, S4 was the last home release from NIS America. The first movie got released by Aniplex, but the US hasn’t gotten anything since.
Surprisingly, S3 actually got a re-release recently (though, I’m not sure when) as a Blu-ray only set, where previously it was BD/DVD. (I guess they ran out of the combos and decided to print just the Blu-rays?)
I hope we get S5/6 someday, but I’m curious as to who would have the distribution rights then.
Also, would it hurt to get the OVAs? Why does America hate OVAs?
I believe it was in an audio interview with Aaron Dismuke by the Cartoon Cipher where I heard it from, but it’s not that North American distributors hate OVAs; it’s just that the rights to OVAs differ from those of TV anime. That’s why OVAs are often not dubbed either.
oh this is cool, but how would they translate natsume’s nickname for madara in english? would he call him “master”, or maybe “teacher” or would they stick with “sensei” hmmmmm i personally like “sir nyanko” hahaha
I don’t see why a hypothetical dub wouldn’t use “sensei” since even the official English translation of the manga uses it, and the official translation doesn’t use honorifics.
i watch both sub and dub and they usually change it to fit mouth flaps, depending on how the sentence is structured in english (some sentences are longer to say in japanese, and then vice versa), and sometimes for context reasons. but it also depends on who’s dubbing it. funimation (and i guess in this case cr) is usually pretty close to the real thing, but netflix sometimes goes way overboard with the changes.
