Silmarillion alone is already giving me a lot of food for thought. For example...

Racism irl has no right to exist, we are absolutely equal no matter skin colour, eye shape and other features we aren't even responsible for.

...but if I were to live in Arda!!! As a human woman! I would keep bitching about elves and how they have everything, and later they are going to chill with the Valar, while my own life is short like a weekend, and I need to eat, sleep and may die of an illness, and my afterlife... no one knows where I'm heading to after I pass away! I'm just a second-born embarrassment forced to look at those pointy-eared superior dudes from time to time, simply to feel worse than I usually do.

Probably Silmarillion won't give me a human perspective tho. Can't wait to read other books and see what men actually think of elves.

this is SO incredibly andreth coded of you OP!

in case u don't know (or if anyone else who follows me is interested!) the athrabeth finrod ah andreth is a text that was originally meant to be included in the silmarillion, but ended up in "morgoth's ring", one of the history of middle earth volumes (a collection of early drafts, extra materials, and analysis etc).

it is a conversation and philosophical debate between finrod and andreth, the elven king and the mortal women. a large portion of the discussion has to do with the differences between elves and men, especially when it comes to death.

"All ye Elves deem that we die swiftly by our true kind. That we are brittle and brief, and ye are strong and lasting. We may be "Children of Eru," as ye say in your lore; but we are children to you also: to be loved a little maybe, and yet creatures of less worth, upon whom ye may look down from the height of your power and your knowledge, with a smile, or with pity, or with a shaking of heads."

it is absolutely fascinating and i cannot recommend it enough! a LOT of what you mentioned in your post is directly echoed by andreth! i love getting the human perspective that we get so little of in the first age, and andreth is so amazing i love her SO much. oh AND as a fun bonus it also includes one of tolkien's most underrated mortal/elf relationships! 👀

you can read about it on tolkien gateway here and there is a pdf of the complete athrabeth finrod ah andreth here

‘We must do without hope,’ [Aragorn] said. ‘At least we may yet be avenged. Let us gird ourselves and weep no more! Come! We have a long road, and much to do.'

We will be okay, I promise this is not the end. It wasn't the end in 2016, it's not today, even if the future is uncertain. No matter who is in the president's seat we will continue to fight, that has not changed.

There's a lot of people getting scared and it's understandable, but as someone who lived through trans bans in FL there's always people on our side willing to take it to the courts and protesting. We find community in each other, find resources, and take care of each other.

Everything feels awful right now but it isn't really. We still don't officially have a winner, but regardless of how the presidential election ends up, I wanted to take a minute and find what lights I can in the 3 a.m. darkness. Here's what I know:

* Kentucky overwhelmingly rejected an attempt to undermine the public education system by offering private school vouchers:

* Delaware has elected a transgender woman to the House of Representatives, the first out trans person of any gender ever elected to congress:

* For the first time in history, two Black women will be serving in the senate at the same time, and they are only the fourth and fifth Black women ever elected to the senate:

* New York State has passed a constitutional amendment enshrining the rights of pregnant people (including the right to an abortion), LGBTQIA+ people, the disabled, immigrants regardless of legal status, and other at-risk groups:

* Democrat Josh Stein has beaten self-avowed Nazi Mark Robinson to become governor of North Carolina:

That's everything I know off the top of my head. It's not many bright spots, but it's not zero. I'm going to try to find more and I'll add them to the post. It's the only thing I can think of to do that isn't sobbing and throwing up or looking up Canadian immigration rules.

If you know more good news, I encourage you to add it in reblogs.

* Nevada has amended their constitution to guarantee abortion rights, overturning a state ban:

* Colorado has passed amendment 79, guaranteeing the right to an abortion, with more than a 20 point spread between the Yes and No vote:

* Maryland Question 1, also focused on reproductive rights and abortion, has passed as well: https://www.cnn.com/election/2024/results/maryland/issue-1

* Likewise, Amendment 3 has passed in Missouri, overturning a near-total ban to add reproductive rights to the state constitution:

* Arizona Proposition 139 to protect abortion rights also passed:

Every glimmer helps.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Friendly reminder that almost half of the states in the U.S. have same day registration! This means you can go to the polling center for your location, register there, and cast your vote same day. So if you are over 18, are a U.S. citizen, and live in one of the states listed below, it is not too late to register and vote! I’m going to put notes for some of the states where voting is extra important due to the political climate of the state.

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • D.C.
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Iowa - recent polls indicate state could flip from red to blue
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • North Carolina - swing state! Could go red or blue
  • North Dakota - voter registration not required
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • Wisconsin - swing state! Could go red or blue
  • Wyoming

You can go here for more info on voter registration

I also have a huge list of voting resources here
