yesterday mohammed told me about how his parents and grandparents described the nakba to him. he knows these stories by heart: how the settlers lied and said the displacements would be temporary, how they took the land and houses for themselves anyway. how they slaughtered entire villages -- killed palestinians just for existing.
mohammed told me he wants to get married and have children and grandchildren of his own. he imagines how he'll tell them about this year, how the stories will sound like 1948 all over again. he wants his children to grow up in a free palestine, safe from the hum of planes and blasts of bombs that terrify his young nieces and nephews. he wants to get old, and sit surrounded by everyone he loves, and tell them about what he endured this year: eight displacements, his house bombed to the ground, his dear sister shot and his 27 family left members relying on him for food, water, shelter, medicine -- for survival.
