So, the condition that Alfie mocks Tommy for: suicidal tendency?
Their first meeting, Alfie threatens to off him, Tommy sits and stares at him, unmoving.
This meeting, Alfie has gun out, cocked, and Tommy actually counts him down to a bang, then huffs/scoffs when Alfie doesn’t pull the trigger.
Followed by Alfie telling him ‘your condition’s got worse, mate.’
I think it’s more like an indifference. Tommy is in this business and he is so successful because he, as well as other things, isn’t afraid to die. Not because he is brave or reckless but because he welcomes death. It’s a release. That’s the condition — a lack of fear of death. And it is fucked up, and Alfie knows that. “I am already dead” and all that.
There was this Steven Knight interview in which he said that he imagines Tommy putting a gun to his head and not firing, and then putting the gun down and saying “let’s see how this goes” before the first episode of the first season. Like, that’s his whole deal — not dying. It might seem like a good thing, but to Tommy? To Tommy that’s as much a curse as it is a gift. That’s the condition. Which you could name ‘suicidal tendency’ but in reality it’s a tendency to truly not fear death.
