If you ship them so much can we have some Sara/Jax smut. For reasons. Please.

omg, anon, I would love to, but as much as I feel I have a semi decent handle on sara, I have never written jax as a main character before. so I will try some canarystorm fics like of the general kind before deciding whether I want to venture into smut land, lol.

but uh I know @zaritomaz writes canarystorm. I’m like 98% sure her ao3 name is themuslimbarbie so like if I am right then go and check out her fic because I remember reading some of her other fic and it totally rocks my socks. :)

1. What is your favourite sentence you’ve ever written? Why?

From Love With No Regret (nsfw)

“I did not think it prudent to fall in love with, let alone be with, a woman I could not have.”
“Hey,” Laurel says softly, grabbing Nyssa’s right hand and kissing her knuckles firmly, “you can have me. For as long and as many times as you want.”

I had to search for this one tbh because I have a lot of favourite lines and even then I couldn’t get it down to one sentence, lol. Part of this is actually inspired (perhaps somewhat ironically, in hindsight) by what Ra’s said to Oliver back in 3x16 – he told Ollie that he was in love with a woman he could not have. And I felt that was a really interesting line both because it clearly got to Oliver (his response was “you don’t know me”) and because it could be construed as a crude way of saying, you know, a woman he couldn’t, well, have, in that way. And when Laurel says “you can have me” she means it in every sense of the word.

2. Are there words, phrases, or images that you return to in your writing?

Hmmmm. Fire, maybe? I legit have no clue for this one. I say “kind of” and “sort of” and “of sorts” and vague words like that, if that counts. I also really like words like “softly and “quietly” and “gently” lol. But maybe people who read my fic can give me suggestions :P

3. There’s that saying about how good writers just up and steal stuff. Have you ever read anything so good that you just had to have it and put it in what you were writing? What was it? What would you want someone to steal from you?

Hahahahahaha. I mean. I frequently use song lyrics as titles nowadays, fwiw. But I think I mentioned a couple of days ago that some of my biggest influences were fiction writers and two of them were Malorie Blackman and Dennis Lehane, and there are a couple of lines I’ve taken from books of theirs.

In Don’t Ever Say Goodbye (nsfw) there was a bit of dialogue I kind of borrowed from Malorie Blackman’s Double Cross.

“What’s on your mind?” he asked softly. She turned on her side, then, so she was facing him, and his head was tilted a little to one side as his eyes met hers and he regarded her enquiringly.  “How much you mean to me,” she said, and she realised her voice was trembling.

And I can’t remember the fic but in one of Dennis Lehane’s books, Gone Baby Gone (which is also my favourite film of all time), there’s this exchange between the main character and his girlfriend where the woman, Angie, says “I’ve missed you” as she comes out of the shower, to which the main character, Patrick, replies “We’ve been on a forty-eight hour stakeout together – what are you talking about?” And Angie drops her towel and he’s like, “Oh, you mean you missed me missed me”. And I have definitely used a variant of that at least a couple of times in fic before but I can’t remember and I cba to go through my fic to find them, lol.

4. Multi-chapter fic or one shot? When writing multi-chapter (if you do), do you plan everything ahead and then write, or do you just write as you go along?

I wrote a few multichaptered fics in my HP days, but I haven’t written anything that is long and multichaptered in Arrow fic, nor do I think I ever will, sadly. The few fics of mine that aren’t one-shots – Wildest Dreams, Distance (nsfw) and A Million Miles (incidentally all fics named after song lyrics) – are all still pretty short and the main reason they’re chaptered is far more because there is either some kind of theme or I thought it would be a bit much as a one-shot. Or I didn’t intend for it to be anything other than a one-shot, only my muse had other ideas ;)

5. What motivates you to continue a fic you’ve already started and shared?

Getting any kind of response helps. @starklinqs is my fave because she leaves lovely reviews that are usually at least a paragraph or more and I love that. @karadnvres and @blackcanary567 and @nyssalghul and @canarycassidy and @piggiesaregreen leave the loveliest tags when reblogging my fic, too. When I was in the HP fandom I’ll admit I became sort of accustomed to getting a fair amount of attention for my fics because I had established a readership over there, so even my rarepair fics got read, at least. That and because there was no option to leave kudos on MNFF, it meant people had to leave comments and I appreciated them a lot, even the one-liners. Whereas here – there are a couple of my fics that went several months without any comments but reached over 100 kudos and well over 2000 hits. Because there is that option of silent appreciation with AO3 and Tumblr (liking or even reblogging a fic without leaving any tags), it’s kind of disheartening knowing people read a fic and liked it enough to leave kudos/like/reblog but not enough to leave a comment.

6. Is there anything in your writing you’d like to change or improve?

Did you mean – everything? :P I want to get better at writing beginnings because I suck at those. Also I wish I didn’t fall prey to writer’s block as much as I do because it sucks. But I want to improve every day and it sometimes makes me wish I bothered getting stuff betaed so I can see where I go wrong (but tbh I cba and also finding a reliable beta or – even better – an alpha beta, like I did in HP, is v hard for Arrow because I have no idea where to start looking).

7. Is the fic you like to read the same as the fic you like to write?

I mean, I like rarepairs and smut, which is kind of what I write. But I mean – I have still yet to write a full on fic for The Flash but I love Westallen fic. So sort of.

Equally, though, I think sometimes I try to write what I find lacking in the fic I read, if that makes sense? So for example, a (worrying) trend I saw in Olicity fic (of the smutty variety) in particular was Oliver not listening when Felicity said “no” and (though rarer) vice versa. I think a conscious reaction to that, for me, was making a big deal out of consent in my own smutty fic because I think it’s important for a relationship. And of course I don’t want to ever trigger anyone the way I have been with this kind of thing in the past, where the author hasn’t necessarily warned for dub con.

8. How many fandoms do you write for? Are they all for one medium (television, books, film, etc.) or more than one? If more than one, is there a different feeling to writing for one as opposed to another?

Well, I did write for HP – a lot of it. I wrote one fic for Supernatural and have 77 written for Arrow currently. I must say, there is definitely a different feeling to writing fic for something ongoing like a TV show, compared to something that is complete and definitive like HP (though of course that is changing with all the new info of JKR’s, but I don’t always take that stuff into account).

9. Is there something that you want to write that you haven’t yet? What’s stopping you?

I have wanted to write several fics for the last few weeks but RL has been a bit hectic lately, so that is the main thing stopping me. I do have a couple of things half-done, though, and I will probably get to them once I have my exam results back so I can stop worrying about them and probably die of shame because I messed up.

10. What’s the one no-good trope that’s #problematic that you just can’t break up with?

Well, for a while I kept using the “it was just a dream” trope, lol. In Wildest Dreams, for instance, I used it a few times, hehe. Also in Stained and Yours (nsfw) I am guilty of using that trope. :P Suffice it to say it’s become a bit predictable so I hope I don’t use it again, hehe.

11. Post a link to one of your fics that you think has been overlooked and would like for more people to check out! :)

We Could be Heroes (just for one day) (nsfw) I’m actually really proud of this fic, and I know Lauriver isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but this one is chockfull of angst and also with a heavy dose of (past) Merlance. And I didn’t even watch 4x19 in its entirety but anyone who had issues with that episode, the flashbacks in particular, I think (hope) might like my version of things better. I’m just saying. The first shippy Lauriver fic I posted on here (Afterglow (nsfw)) got a good response that was largely from people who don’t even ship them. I would loooove for anyone to check it out and let me know what they think, even if it’s not their usual thing. :) /shameless self promotion
