hi!!!!! I'm freaking out! every time i go to the bathroom there seems to be white sticky stuff coming out of my vagina. I know that this is supposed to happen, but I don't know how normal it really is??? could i have an STD? please help!

Hey there! Don’t freak out! It’s called vaginal discharge, and it happens to most girls! It is basically your vagina cleaning itself out, and the amount can change based on so many different factors. While it is normal, certain types of discharge might mean mean your body is going through something a little weird. You should go to a gyno if you are concerned about STD, and you can learn more about discharge here!

I don’t know about you, but I feel like my vagina rules my life sometimes. If it’s my time of the month, I’m curled up with a heating pad because my cramps are killer. If I have an uncomfortable itch down there, it ruins my day, as it’s the only thing I can focus on. If I go to the bathroom and notice my vaginal discharge looks or smells a little funky, I get nervous thinking something is not normal. If you’re anything like me and you see or smell something different down there, you automatically think something is wrong, you freak out, and you frantically Google your symptoms before making a gyno appointment.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Discharge is one of the few topics that even the most TMI of us are apprehensive to venture into. We’ll happily reblog posts about the carnage of sneezing during our period, we’ll talk about how much we have to pee, and some will even talk about their farts. But discharge? Apparently cervical fluid is just too gross?

Uh, that’s BS.

If I had a dollar for every time I read a question about discharge from one of you guys, I would actually be a millionaire. I’m serious. I totally get it – discharge is confusing and can be scary if you don’t know what’s going on. Unfortunately, most sexual education classes don’t teach enough about what’s coming out of your vay-jay-jay, and it’s a subject no one really wants to talk about over coffee, so we’re left kind of clueless.

That’s why Gurl is here! We talk about discharge like it’s no big deal, and we’re more than happy to help you guys get more comfortable with your bodies and figure out what’s going on. Here is your guide to every kind of vaginal discharge you might experience, and what it means along with what you should do.

Out of all of the questions we get asked here at Gurl, one of the most common topics to be discussed is vaginal discharge. All of you want to know if it’s normal, what’s not normal, how to hide it, and… well, a whole bunch more.
I get it. Vaginal discharge is not dinnertime conversation. It’s not something you discuss with friends, it’s not something you want to bring up to your mom, and it’s even a topic you may be hesitant to talk to a doctor about. Most sexual education courses don’t even talk about discharge, which just makes it seem more taboo – and also kind of terrifying when you see something in your underwear. Stuff coming out of your vay-jay-jay is an embarrassing topic that you don’t particularly want to share with others.
Here’s the deal: vaginal discharge is normal and it happens to almost every woman out there. If you’ve got more questions about it, though, you’ve come to the right place. Here are the answers to 12 of your most embarrassing questions about vaginal discharge. No judgement, no weirdness, and no holding back.

Nobody really talks about vaginal discharge. Why? Well, in the grand scheme of vaginal news, it’s not really a very sexy topic. It’s not as interesting as periods, and it’s definitely not the most thrilling thing to hear about when you’re learning about puberty. Nobody is talking about their vaginal discharge with their friends or anything like that either. And yet, everyone with a vagina has to deal with it. When you think about it, discharge might be one of the most taboo topics about the human body. Think about it, people are more likely to talk about their bowel movements than the mucus-like substance coming out of their vagina everyday!
Maybe the lack of discussion about it explains why so many people are so uninformed and confused by their vaginal discharge. If you’re one of those people, it’s time to get schooled. So here’s everything you need to know about vaginal discharge. You’re definitely going to pay more attention to that weird stuff coming out of your vag from now on.

Due to the horrid state of sex ed in America I never really learned much about the female body. I know that discharge is normal but I'm not sure to what extent. SInce about the 7th grade I have had discharge all day every day, and it's been 6 years. It's a milky white color but it doesn't usually seem to have a strong scent. Is it normal for this to happen 24/7? I'm sick of it dirtying my underwear so much and so fast!

Hiii there,

We’re not doctors, so we recommend going to a gynecologist and talking to them if you haven’t yet. However, milky white discharge is completely normal. As long as it doesn’t itch/hurt, smell odd, or change color, you have nothing to worry about. Read How Much Vaginal Discharge Is Normal? for some more info.

love,

gurl
