Furry nails are not a “thing.” I know this. They have not ever been a thing, are not a thing now, and, God willing, will never actually be a thing at any point in the future, because there is absolutely no reason for furry nails to be a thing, ever. Just the placement of these two words in immediate proximity to one another, “furry” and “nails,” feels itchy and nauseating, a distasteful juxtaposition that evokes the same feeling as “fish sticks” and “lighter fluid” or, I don’t know, “Donald Trump” and “president.”
I’ve learned the hard way that doing a DIY manicure is way harder than it looks. It can be a lot of fun, but at the same time, it can also be time-consuming and tedious. I mean, countless attempts at trying to get the perfect manicure have taught me that I will probably never get my nails to look as flawless as they do whet I go to the nail salon. But you know what’s even harder? Trying to make these manicures last beyond two to three days.
f you took an arts ‘n’ crafts class at any point throughout your childhood, you’re probably familiar with pom-poms–you know, those little multicolored clumps of yarn or acrylic that seem to be a staple in any and all art classrooms in elementary schools. Perhaps you have been missing those little guys? If so, there’s now another way to work pom-poms into your look, should you be so inclined–they’re called pom-pom nails.
I don’t know about you, but I have never been much of a nail polish girl, personally. Something about the way I move my hands, open doors, and reach into bags–abruptly, jerkily, and wholly devoid of any sense of grace whatsoever–makes it so any polish I have on my hands, however hopefully it was applied, gets chipped off within a few hours. Because of this, I usually go without–bare nails are boring, yes, but it’s definitely better than having a chipped-up checkerboard of Essie Petal Pusher that I feel obligated to hide under my sleeves until I finally take it off. Today, though, I found out about a new nail trend that might be able to withstand even my most inept, bumbling of hand gestures–it’s called furry nails.
I love getting my nails done, but I hate having my polish chip and peel off. Chipped nails ain’t a good look, and no one has the time to paint their nails every day. Gel manicures are nail polish’s long-lasting solution. The process involves painting your nails with several coats of gel polish, each of which are set using UV light. This results in a hard coat, similar to an acrylic nail but without the damage. You’re left with a strong, chip-resistant color that lasts for weeks.

Undercover Colors: Four students at North Carolina State University have started developing a date rape detection nail polish. They explained, "With our nail polish, any woman will be empowered to discreetly ensure her safety by simply stirring her drink with her finger. If her nail polish changes color, she’ll know that something is wrong." I personally don't want to have to stick my finger in my drink to find out if some jerk dropped a date rape drug in it.
