I’ve been thinking about this book again so here’s a Maia. My sketch was just for the fourth hairstyle but then Empresses in the Palace/Legend of Zhen Huan showed up again on my Netflix and, well

We are quite happy to be on His Serenity’s staff. It is possible it’s the most unusual and wonderful staff we’ve ever had the privilege to sit on.

Just finished rereading The Goblin Emperor by Sarah Monette/Katherine Addison! Still one of my favorite books and easily some of the best fantasy I’ve ever read :) so here’s Maia and Csethiro!
Maia and Csevet, sitting in a tree… aka I was working on detailed costume drawings of the TGE cast, got overwhelmed by ~sharadansho silk~ and decided everything would be easier if they were naked. For added amusement imagine Cala and Beshelar are standing about three feet to the right of this scene, due to it being their job or whatever. Their reactions to this highly irregular breach of protocol are entirely up to you.
I’ve started listening to “The Goblin Emperor” audiobook. So here’s my attempt at drawing Maia. WHAT A GOOD BOOK BTW.

Maia, from the Goblin Emperor, by Katherine Addison. This book grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go offering a different dimension of fantasy than usual (focusing rather on character and politics rather than swords and sorcery), and boasting lovely worldbuilding as well as one of the most lovable, refreshingly kind protagonists I’ve ever encountered. Please read this book, it is a true joy.

Emperor Edrehasivar Zhas.
Lacking tashin sticks or combs, he had had to make do with braiding his hair back neatly and pinning it off his neck, but the style was more suited to a child than to an adult, much less to an emperor.
Nemer dressed his hair with frosted glass tashin sticks and strands of pearls, and his rings were white opals set in platinum. Opals in his ears, and he tried not to remember a warm summer morning in Isvaroë and his mother piercing his ears with a needle.
I want to clutch The Goblin Emperor and its entire store of fanfic and fanart to my chest and just roll around in it like a cat.
IT’S SO GOOD. YOU GUYS. THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD. MAIA IS A PRECIOUS IMPERIAL CINNAMON ROLL. like, I wouldn’t actually want to live in that world but I just want to hang out with the characters All Day Everyday. it is a CRIME that throughout the book I don’t think anyone actually gave Maia the hug he so desperately needed and deserved
basically if you like really thick, character-driven fantasy worldbuilding where the protagonist and most (all, I’m psure) of his allies strive to be Good and Kind even in the face of hard decisions and betrayal, go read it. also, if you HAVE read it, please hit me up so that I can scream helplessly about the protagonists and my desire for a Csevet/Beshelar/Csethiro/Cala/Maia cuddlepile to happen in at least one fic
