SPY X FAMILY SEASON 2 (EP. 3)

The episode uses this creeping black transition after a lot of Yuri's scenes, particularly the ones where he was actively surveilling Franklin Perkin: after Perkin bullies the children, after Perkin's conversation with his father (my personal favorite), and after Perkin smuggles his article into the screened letters. It's an effective way of showing Yuri's increasingly negative emotions towards Perkin: they surround him like a fog-like barrier, warding off thoughts and feelings that would've distracted him from the assignment.

This black transition also feels symbolic of the SSS, especially in Yuri's life. To Yuri who believes that knowledge is power and that power must be used to protect the people he cares about, the SSS lights the way to the path he thinks is right. But in truth, the SSS is a corruptive force that swallows him up in shadow and will keep him in the dark to control him for as long as he's useful to them.

This makes this moment towards the end really special to me. After Yuri tells Perkin that he'll speak to his superiors about getting financial aid for Perkin's father, we see Perkin pause, his back still turned to us, before proceeding to walk away. The camera cuts to the facade of the apartment building, tilting up from the part that's in shadow to the half that's bathed in light as we hear Perkin sort of thank Yuri for the offer.

I'd like to think that this visual means to show us how Yuri was motivated by his own personal feelings, that he was acting not as the SSS agent but as himself who begrudgingly sympathizes with a man who just wants to protect his family. While Yuri may still have a long way to go to true enlightenment, I'd like to think that he still has enough light in him to guide him to the right direction.
