Prompts: Special breakfast — Spoon feeding — Forehead kiss
Kazuki opened bleary eyes as the dark peace of his room was shattered by the door creaking open and a loud whisper asking, “Papa, are you asleep?”
“Mmgghph,” was the only sound Kazuki managed before breaking into a horrible coughing fit that shook him from head to toe. Struggling to sit up and stifle the cough, Kazuki squinted over at the door. Had the hall light always been that blindingly bright? He barely made out the silhouette of Rei standing in the doorway, holding a tray or something.
The patter of socked feet across the floor, then the lamp next to the bed clicked on, stabbing more light into Kazuki's head. He turned away to blow his nose, and after blowing out what felt like half of his brain into the tissue, he felt slightly more capable of facing the light again.
Miserable as he felt, he couldn't suppress a small smile when he looked down and found Miri standing at his bedside, looking up at him with round eyes sparkling with excitement. “Kazuki Papa, we made you a special breakfast! It's gonna make you get better reeeeeeaaaaal soon!”
“You made me breakfast?” Kazuki quirked an eyebrow at Rei, who was carefully setting down a tray with a bowl of something steaming hot on the desk. “You made it yourself?”
Rei shot him a withering look as he gathered up the bowl and spoon. “You know me better than that. It's instant miso soup. It was in the pantry.”
“Ah.” Kazuki glanced at Miri, who was batting at Rei's hand that held the spoon, trying to take it from him. “Well, I'm sure it tastes just as good.”
“Miri wants to feed Kazuki Papa!” Miri finally managed to snatch the spoon, and Rei had to focus on keeping the soup from spilling.
“I can feed myself...” Kazuki said feebly, but it was no use. Once Miri got an idea in her head, she was like a dog with a bone, and it was usually easier to just go along with her plans.
So in the end, Rei perched on the side of the bed, holding the bowl steady, while Kazuki leaned over awkwardly and let Miri clumsily spoon soup into his mouth, coaxing him to 'say ahhh!' and dribbling more soup into his lap than ended up in his mouth.
“Kazuki Papa, you made a mess!” Miri laughed when they finally finished.
“Yeah, yeah....” Kazuki wiped his sleeve under his chin, carefully folding the corner of his blanket down so he wouldn't be lying in the rapidly cooling puddle of soup.
Rei gathered up the bowl, spoon, and tray and headed for the door again. “Come on, Miri. He needs to sleep now so he can get better.” So he can start cooking again, was what he didn't say, but Kazuki could see it in the reluctant glance he cast over his shoulder. Kazuki didn't want to think about the state of the kitchen right now. Probably full of pizza boxes and all his good pots burned black on the bottom.
“Okay.” But instead of leaving, Miri tugged on Kazuki's sleeve until he bent down again. Then, standing on tiptoe, she planted a loud kiss on his forehead. “Did my kiss make you feel lots better, Papa?”
“It sure did,” Kazuki said, patting her on the head. He could hear echoes of the times she'd fallen and skinned her knee, and he'd patched her up with a kiss.
Then Miri spun on her heel and declared, “Now you kiss him, Rei Papa!”
“Er....” Rei glanced furtively between the two of them, a deer caught in the headlights.
But Miri was insistent. “Come on, Rei Papa! You gotta kiss him so he gets better even faster!”
“But...I don't....” Rei set down the tray again. He peeked out between long strands of his dark hair. “I've never...kissed....”
No, you wouldn't have, would you? If Rei had fallen and skinned his knee as a kid, his father probably would have chastised him for not being perfect, or punished him for crying at the pain. There would have been no brightly colored bandages or kissing of boo-boos. And Kazuki didn't think he'd ever seen Rei kiss Miri either.
Not one to be deterred by something as minor as this, Miri said brightly, “Don't worry, Rei Papa! I'll teach you!”
Grabbing his hand by the pinkie, Miri dragged Rei over to the bed again. “See, you just go like this!”
While Miri puckered up her lips and made loud mwa! sounds, Kazuki's stifled laughter turned into another long coughing fit. By the time he finally surfaced from his tissues again, it seemed Miri's kissing lesson was finished.
“Are you ready?” Rei scowled at the wall, refusing to look Kazuki in the eye.
“Yeah.” Kazuki wanted to make some kind of quip, but he was out of breath, and his mind was fogging over again with the fever anyway. So he just lay down on the pillow, feeling his eyelids beginning to droop.
The deadly assassin bent down swiftly, blocking out the light. The kiss was surprisingly gentle, just a soft, warm pressure against Kazuki's forehead. “Get well soon,” he whispered.
Like the reverse of Sleeping Beauty, Kazuki was out like a light.
