Vulcan teen on Vulcan [tiktok] saying "I have just lost track of my father in the grocery store." The camera turns to show the viewers the grocery store in which almost every single older middle-aged man has a bowlcut and long robes. Camera turns back to show the teen's face which is expressionless and yet communicates all it needs to.

One reply says "I understand; I too 'lost track' of my father when he accompanied me to the Vulcan Learning Centre in a garish and unnecessary shade of grey"
Replies are split between Vulcans agreeing he took the correct course of action and humans begging to see a "garish and unnecessary shade of grey"
Scuzz, Jeff gets the knock out flash because he physically cannot slow down. Lenore is not your personal melotonin, she doesn't even know how her powers work let alone effects of using them carelessly. DP7 4
I presume Scuzz is the token asshole of the team?
He's the token 15 year old of the team, which is the same thing except its impossible to hold blame to him about it for very long.
Oh, I hadn't realized he was a kid, now I feel bad.
Yea, changes the perspective don't it? Yes, he's an asshole. He's also 15 and all of them are?
We actually know, thanks to the big slideshow at the beginning of #6! Charly is 19, Jeff is 24, Randy is 28, Stephanie is 30, Dave is 34, and Lenore is 66. Everyone but Charly is considerably older, and even Charly is a college student. They all have very different perspectives and priorities than an unhappy and deliberately obnoxious teenager, and none of them particularly know what to do with him.
Mystery Inc. meet Holmes and Watson!
I am having a lot of fun with this Victorian Scooby Doo au!!
As someone who doesn't have a faith of my own, I am hard pressed to understand how those of faith would take in something like the White Event changing them the way it did David especially. What I CAN say is I would hope it would be taken as a blessing that such strength was given to such a kind man. Sound off in the comments, diverse perspectives would be good on this one. DP7 5
Ok he is playing into the rather annoying “atheist angry at god because loved one died” cliche, gonna have to deduct points at least a little bit, as if his lack of faith is some kind of failure in his part? That’s it’s something he “lost” when his parents died instead of something he simply doesn’t believe he needs. but it’s certainly better then the portrayal of atheists in things like “gods not dead” so I’ll give it a pass. I guess some cliche’s are unavoidable.
I’m gotta say though, I wouldn’t think these powers are proof of something beyond human understanding, just because you don’t understand it “yet” doesn’t mean you or some other scientist can’t understand it eventually,
That’s the thing about the ”supernatural”, simply by existing in the world it becomes natural, if it can be proven to exists by any reasonable measure it’s natural.
It seems like David isn’t one of the scientifically minded atheists though and heck I’d be lying if I said my personal understanding of such things is super advanced in any area, but the point remains things that exist can be studied and understood. Even if the institute is seemingly doing so for selfish and immoral reasons.
David is an enigma for a lot of reasons. All the characters are for the simple fact that we get broader images of their personal lives before all this shit went down but haven't had time to fully dig into them. David seems to have been a man who was very close with his parents up until their sudden passing at a rather recent date, and still holds very close family ties in general. What he did for a living before this is a bit unknown though given his general demeanor we can guess he probably worked with his hands.
His general philosophy can be seemingly marked by a hard insistence on "live and let live" above all though how much of that is true commitment to acceptance and how much of it is a disconnection from investment in the world is hard to say.
Like everyone in this series, I'm looking forward to looking under his hood as we go on
Per references in #1 and #6, Dave was a factory worker for a cheese company (because Wisconsin). I don’t think we ever get more than that.
i love when people say michael’s existence is a plot hole because spock obviously has such a good track record of telling jim about his family members
You get the feeling the chip on Scuzz' shoulder comes from being powerless in life, probably under the thumb of some shit authority figures. Now that he HAS power, he's acting out with it irresponsibility because he thinks that gives him freedom. DP7 5
There's also the innate loneliness in there too. He though he'd finally found people who are "weird" like him, but he doesn't fit in there either.
Plus he also has a power which is almost uniquely destructive in nature and one which means, amongst other things
- He burns through anything just by being in physical contact and whilst he can dial it up, he can't dial it down, it's always on
- He burns through his own clothes AND shoes. That's going to be a very expensive life moving forward.
- The chances of him ever having a relationship which involves much in the way of tactile conduct, still less anything more intimate, is zero.
I always found Scuzz one of the more fascinating characters in terms of the way his power impacted his life. I mean, Rogue has the contact issue with her bare skin, but she can at least eat without worrying her powers will decay the food before she can eat it.
Gotta do it
I don’t care what news I get I just want this stupid potato dog on my dash
Same lol
Now, WE know this sounds insane because we're speaking from the outside and have metatextual notions of what the White Event was, what it did or didn't do. These people have NOTHING to go on. Honestly I would not be counting out demons either. DP7 5
Yeah, in a different book they could be completely right. Maybe the White Event was the energy that broke open a demonic prison and let a thousand fiends loose upon the earth! As it happens they’re not starring in HELLBLAZER (and lucky for them), but they don’t know that.
It's called BEING friendly, Scuzz.
Try it. It's good for the soul. DP7 5
I'm actually starting to feel sorry for this guy.
Scuzz is the youngest of the group—the art is not really conveying this, but a later issue establishes him as 15–with a not-great home life. He’s a jerk, no question, but he’s got his reasons.
Hi. Things are bleak, I know that. I know that we paid for Trump's last term with blood and it is likely the price will be blood again.
But listen to me. LISTEN.
You do not have to force yourself to witness horrors as an act of activism. It is not a form of activism. You can put your phone down, you can block that horrific video. We cannot win if you cannot fight and you will not be able to fight if you are hopeless.
Do not let them guilt you into this. People who are exhausted are easier to walk over. Take care of yourself, find community where you find joy.

^^^ remember this. do not exhaust yourself into hopelessness. take care of yourself and stay strong.
I know I've recced it before, but if you want a place to monitor the news while avoiding getting caught in the horrors, What The Fuck Just Happened Today is a really useful resource. They summarize political (& adjacent) news so you can remain aware of what's going on while still minimizing the emotional energy you expend on any one issue. (And they provide links and sourcing if you need to know more.)
That Fro is 🔥. The colors and the the variations. I just love it.
