I do try to read them though, and I'm always open to being asked questions about characters or my headworld/stories. I am already aware that my art is being copied. They're blocked. Please stop telling me about it. Rest of my FAQ is under the cut >

how often do you draw? I am curious how much I should be drawing for improvement.

Daily! Although there's much quicker ways to improve than the way I draw daily. My improvement is at a crawl most of the time because I don't explicitly try to get better (but I'm satisfied with that). I'm going to speak generally from here, to anyone who happens to read this, with I guess a disclaimer that this is from personal experience and I'm sure no one learns art the same way. If you really want to get better, do personal art and do art that makes you happy. If you're looking for a how-to book, buy one that will motivate you to draw more, not one that will bore you. Drawing is staying motivated to do it a lot. There are no bad how-to books if having it in your hands keeps you interested in drawing. There's also the internet. I tend to focus on books because I was a kid books were what I had. Anyway, that's the staying motivated part.

If you want to improve, look up Andrew Loomis, there's a lot to learn there. Set aside a little time to draw from reference or life. Ten minutes of loosely sketching poses from google or line-of-action.com doesn't feel like it does anything when you're doing it, but it builds over time. In fact, when you're doing things that will help you improve, it will almost never feel like you're improving while you're doing it. The payoff comes later (and quietly). If there's something you struggle with, spend 10 - 30 minutes drawing ten of that from reference. Ten hands. Ten feet. Ten noses. You don't need to finish the art or refine it. Messy is fine. It's not meant to take a lot of time or look good. It doesn't have to be thirty minutes either, it could be three. Watch streams! Watch other artists draw. Hang around other artists if you can, especially in environments where art is being streamed. Watch videos on youtube. There's so many resources on the internet that weren't there when I was a kid. It's incredible.

how do you make the fashion posts? you must have designed hundreds of outfits at this point

Avatar

I liken it to drawing trees. Hopefully I can make that make sense. If you sit down and draw a lot of trees of different kinds, or plants, you remember that stuff later and the variety starts to fill itself in after a time. It's like learning an alphabet, but limb and leaf shapes, I guess.

I have a lot of fashion books, but not like fashion catalogues. I have books like Folk and Festival Costume that are hand illustrated. Seeing someone else capture fabric weight and folds in lineart has been a huge help for me, and there are lots (lots) of fashion books that do that. Kinda like how there are a lot of art books took talk about lineart techniques for plants. If you're an artist and can't get books outright, I think internet archive lends digital copies.

Rare thumbnail share, but I like how this one is turning out and I need to get motivated to work on pages.

I'm redoing the conversation Belz and Jacky have at the very beginning. As is, it isn't really accomplishing anything. I could get a lot more out of it.

Is there a specific color combination that could be considered the head or beginning of Herman/tail or end?

Avatar

I don't think so but I seem to have a preference for making the head purple (which isn't captured in this art, but I feel like I have one). All of Herman could be his head or his tail end. He's ambiguous that way haha

Avatar

More fashion. I like working on these. All together they look like a pokemon poster. Some of them I like, some I don't. Some feel like stuff Jacky would actually wear, some don't. It's more about variety than anything.

Taking multi-ych comms. Probably gonna be super annoying about advertising them all winter to prepare for next year so I don't go into it owing taxes (ugh). Open for these and other treats style comms (more examples on the link). I won't be able to stream these. Turn around will be roughly one week. https://commissionashley.weebly.com/treats.html

Banging on the walls chanting "OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR ACA THRU JAN 15" like some deranged town crier. Election results aside, you have options to access healthcare as a RIGHT through the ACA. NO one can dismantle the Affordable Care Act in less than 4 years, so SIGN UP! GET YOUR CARE! USE THE SYSTEM!

You have options RIGHT NOW that will be stable thru the next year, the one after that, and I'd be shocked to see them shrink even the year after that. That means RIGHT NOW you can get signed up for next year to gain 100% covered preventative care (your annual check ups, pap smears, dental cleaning, vision check). You have the option to get checked and screened as you need, do NOT be dissuaded from exploring ACA choices. They are SOLID, LEGISLATED, and WORK BEST WHEN PEOPLE USE THEM.

I can't change most things around me, BUT I CAN tell everyone I know that THEY CAN GET LIFE SAVING CARE. THEY CAN GET PRESCRIPTIONS. THEY CAN GET PREGNANCY CARE. THEY CAN GET CANCER CARE. AND THEY WILL GET THAT CARE!!!!!!

SIGN UP BY DECEMBER 15, 2024 FOR COVERAGE TO BEGIN ON JANUARY 1, 2025. ENROLLMENT AFTER 12/15/24 WILL HAVE COVERAGE BEGINNING FEBRUARY 1, 2025.

New pages 24 and 25. The first is all new, the second is a redraw. I think redrawing comic pages is not a good use of my time without a good reason. I have always wanted to redo how Jacky got caught. The method is fine- but it didn't have any personality. I like this much more.

This will read better overall when I revisit the conversation she has with Belz at the beginning, which I have thumbed, but I'm still kicking around dialogue. If I change a few interactions up earlier in the story it'll make new pages easier to write. That's the goal at the moment.
