Jane's Relationship with Hope

Mentalist Mondays - Week 40

Throwing Fire 2x10 and Pretty Red Balloon 4x03 are two key episodes where they show Jane's guilt about his past life as a psychic.

In 2x10, we see how a teenage Patrick Jane is forced by his father into conning a dying teenage girl. In 4x03, an old client asks him to find her son still believing that he's a psychic. In both episodes, his father and his client justify that pretending to be a psychic was ok as he was giving people hope but Jane doesn't believe this.

Jisbon's approach to hope is also really interesting. Lisbon, normally more pessimistic than Jane, comforts him multiple times after near-misses with Red John and maintains hope and optimism that they will catch RJ. Jane, who is usually very optimistic about his plans working, struggles to believe at times he will catch RJ or that he will have a life after RJ is dealt with.
