the human stress response seems so maladaptive!

To be fair 99% of our evolutionary stress response was meant to deal with far more immediately conclusive scenarios than the tedious bullshit we put up with these days.

very very slow tigers are chasing me

not to leave a serious comment on a silly post but one of the best pieces of advice I ever got about stress was to SLEEP but secondly, when overwhelmed, lay in a bed and intentionally hold all your muscles clenched. clench EVERYTHING. hold it for a few seconds, then let go. It tricks your animal fight-or-flight monkey brain into thinking it had, and won, a fight, and some of the stress response will leave you

#turn a slow tiger into a fast tiger with this fucked up trick

I need everyone to know that when I am educating clients on tension release exercises in therapy all I can think of is this post. It takes everything out of me not to say "let's try the fucked up tiger trick" in session.

just say it queen, let's make it happen

Cons:

  • We got a letter about code violations. We have until 10 days from the date of the letter to address them.
  • The letter was dated 7/20.
  • The letter was postmarked 7/25.
  • The letter arrived 7/27, which is a Saturday, and the city offices are closed
  • The deadline is 7/29, when they will perform a reinspection.
  • One of the items is getting a dead tree removed. Three weeks ago we scheduled someone to look at it. Their earliest available appointment was 7/23.
  • Due to the rot and proximity of power lines, their company is unable to do it, and we need a specialist.
  • We are going out of town soon, so scheduling a specialist will be difficult.
  • My in-laws announced they're spending the night tomorrow night. 26 hours' notice. We knew they were "maybe stopping by on their way through at the end of the month," but somehow that morphed into staying the night. Tomorrow night.

Pros:

  • I emailed the code enforcement officer detailing our difficulties and the disadvantage the late arrival of the letter put us at.
  • My father-in-law enjoys yardwork, and can probably help us trim the trees and address the lawn issues.
  • My mom listened to me spill all of my stress and was kind and encouraging.

hey guys so apparently this is a thing a lot of people don't realise but like. if you have had writer's block/ art block for like. six months. a year. two years. that's maybe not a block. that's maybe depression. and you should maybe look into treating the source of the problem instead of just beating yourself up for not being able to write/draw. be kind to yourself and know that your struggle to create isn't based in laziness or a lack of skill or talent.

You also do have like, a finite amount of energy. Especially creative and emotional energy.

The celebrate-the-grind stories where some famous artist held down two grueling part-time jobs to make ends meet and got by on four hours of sleep a night so they'd have time to write their novel or paint or whatever, so what's your excuse are absolute bullshit. We should look at those about the same as we look at long-haul truckers doing a lot of amphetamines to handle driving for 16 hours a day or AAA game studios and crunch time.

So yeah, if your ability to make art has dried up, you really should take a good look at the underlying reasons and see if there's maybe some self-care you need to be doing. The answer is pretty much never "laziness."

I was actually just reading about this in Caste: The Origins of our Discontent. The author talks about how one’s body goes into stress or anxiety or defense mode when the person knows they’re being followed, watched, or otherwise scrutinized. She brought race into it. A Nigerian man, who was just a person in his country, was healthy as anything. He got to the U.S. and within a year, his doctor told him he was suddenly pre-diabetic and had high blood pressure. He never had those things in his country. He learned that being Black in the U.S. is a very different experience than being Black in a Black-centric country. The author elaborated more about those in poverty, women, and being a minority in general. Having that “fight or flight” triggered in the body, sometimes for hours or days or weeks at a time, degrades the body’s natural defenses, making them more vulnerable to disease.

All adults have days when we feel completely drained. When we no longer quite know what we spend so much time fighting for, when reality and everyday worries overwhelm us and we wonder how much longer we're going to be able to carry on. The wonderful thing is that we can all live through far more days like that without breaking than we think. The terrible thing is that we never know exactly how many.

  • Foundation got finished early
  • But they found missing cross beams so it ended up being 2k more than quoted
  • Also a pipe broke so we can't do laundry until that's fixed
  • You don't realize how much you love being able to do laundry until you can't
  • My job fooled me. It seemed mostly chill at the start, but I've come to realize we're just as understaffed as everywhere else in the world
  • Our house looks like this:
  • The choir I joined has stopped being any fun at all and is now only a stressful obligation
  • But I'm going to feel terrible guilt if/when I quit
  • They still haven't posted the work schedule for next week, which is stressful because I had to schedule a plumber not knowing if I'd even be available, and I may have to scramble to cover a shift
  • I'm feeling very frayed
  • But to show my husband I love him I cleaned two toilets today. It's not much, but he's always so supportive and wonderful, it's one little thing I can do for him
  • A customer came into the store yesterday wearing a restaurant uniform, and when he asked how I was doing, it was utterly sincere, and he gets it, he gets what it's like being in customer service, and I love him for it

New retail job is going pretty well. I had a couple questions for the manager, but even though he's on the schedule, he never seems to be at the particular store location where I'm working, so I haven't been able to ask him about that stuff. So I sent him a lengthy text with my questions, lengthy because I wanted to be thorough and clear, and he's read but not responded yet, but now I'm worried that I'm annoying and pushy and too much and I've spent the last 25 minutes sobbing and hating myself, so, you know, Monday.

Also someone in my workout class said that pitbulls are inherently violent, and another person, a particularly hateful Republican woman, said "That's why I hate all pitbulls." She also recently suggested that Kamala Harris only became vice president through giving blowjobs. I've about had it with her.

And I had to get gas today and I had to try two credit cards and two separate pumps.

And our foundation repair got moved up in schedule, but now I'm worried that, since I'm working outside the house now, I won't be home to give the utility workers access to our backyard and that they won't be able to contact me and we'll have to cancel the whole repair.

I'm just losing it over here, don't mind me

America is a hard place to live right now.

The irony of the numbing and avoidance symptoms of trauma is that they’re not about NOT caring-- they’re about having cared so much, for so long, that our nervous system couldn’t sustain it. It’s how you get enormously passionate people who now essentially feel dead inside.
