The moon’s a great friend of mine. I’ve loved her ever since I can remember... Many’s the night I’ve watched her on seas far away from here.

TUDOR WEEK 2024

Day 6: Favorite Tudor Couple - Elizabeth of York and Henry VII

The couple’s early years together may have been challenging, for Henry had to overcome his suspicions of his Yorkist bride and deal with her dangerous relations. Yet she clearly left him in no doubt as to where her loyalties lay. As time passed, he clearly grew to love, trust and respect her, and they seem to have become emotionally close. There survives good evidence that she loved him, and a moving account of how they comforted each other when their eldest son, Arthur, died. -- Alison Weir, Elizabeth of York: The First Tudor Queen/Elizabeth of York: A Tudor Queen and Her World

TUDOR WEEK 2024

Day 5 - Friday, 18th of October: Favourite Tudor Iconography - Catherine of Aragon's Pomegranate

But although she was almost fourteen by the time she saw the golden walls of Granada again, the city was clearly very important to Katherine. When she left her homeland to marry abroad, she had to choose a personal badge. She chose the pomegranate. She never said why. Yet while she probably had many reasons for her choice, we have a clue to one of them: the Spanish word for pomegranate is “granada.” -- Sister Queens: The Noble, Tragic Lives of Katherine of Aragon and Juana, Queen of Castila by Julia Fox

“Her intelligence, forceful personality, and firm opinions are noted in letters sent between ambassadors and emissaries … trained to be fluent in multiple languages, to be able to debate religion and philosophy, and in sports and music.”

- Ann Foster on Mary I [which can also be attributed to her mother Katherine of Aragon]
