AND a race one since the most affected regions will be Africa, Asia and Oceania

as a friend pointed out, this headline makes it sound like supply will be dwindling. supply is fine. people will be *priced out*.

this is fucking MURDER.

insulin has been mass produced (from animal extracts) since -1923-. slow acting insulin has existed since the ‘50s, and ‘human’ genetically engineered insulin (derived from E. coli bacteria) has existed since 1982.

insulin treatment for diabetes is not some new or ‘unproven’ treatment. according to beyondtype1, “Humalog rapid-acting insulin came on to the market with a list price of $21 a vial in 1997.” adjusting for inflation, a vial these days should cost about $34 at most. instead, it costs over $300. there is NO reason for it to be steadily gaining in price to the point that diabetics are unable to afford their lifesaving medication, other than the sheer inhuman greed of pharmaceutical manufacturers.

let me reiterate: life without insulin (for Type 1 diabetics in particular) is a slow and painful death sentence. the ability to treat diabetes is a relatively modern phenomenon that has allowed countless people to live full, healthy lives. we should be expanding full covereage and access to insulin to diabetics the world over, and it should be FREE.

Have y’all heard about Open Insulin Foundation?

We’re a team of biohackers with a variety of backgrounds, and skills, and relationships to insulin and diabetes from many cities and countries around the world, including Oakland, California; Baltimore, Maryland; Paraiba, Brazil; Dakar, Senegal; Yaounde, Cameroon; and Puerto Rico. We’re working to develop the first practical, small-scale, community-centered model for insulin production to make insulin accessible to all. We envision a world in which communities in need have local sources of safe, affordable, high-quality insulin, and where people living with diabetes and their communities can own and govern the organizations that produce the medicine they depend on to survive.

What We Do

We are creating an open-source (freely available) model for insulin production that centers on sustainable, small-scale manufacturing and open-source alternatives to production. We are developing protocols to produce short-acting (lispro) and long-acting (glargine) insulin, working on developing open-hardware equivalents to traditional production equipment, are researching sustainable regulation pathways to bring our insulin to the public, and are building capacities for local, small-scale manufacturing.

How Do I Participate?

Our work would not be possible without the support of volunteers, interns, and community advisors. We welcome people of all backgrounds from all over the world to bring their enthusiasm, time, connections, and experiences, both in life and in work. Our volunteers promote us on social media, build equipment, run experiments, write reports and blog posts, facilitate meetings, connect with other organizations and groups, meet with experts in the field, run virtual events, and contribute in designing tools, resources, and methods of all sorts.

Potential Partners

We welcome collaboration with other groups that share our mission―community labs, academic institutions, patient advocacy groups, and NGOs.

Donate

Your donation will help us get closer to our goal. With a healthy financial situation, we can pay for lab supplies, acquire lab equipment, recruit scientists, and pay for consultation fees for regulation and manufacturing experts.”

🇵🇸 SHOP PALESTINE 🇵🇸

Palestinians will tell you that one of their greatest wishes is that the world would not forget them; this is what their oppressors are aiming to do. Unfortunately the attacks in Sheikh Jarrah and Al-Aqsa mosque are just instances in decades of horrific oppression and ethnic cleansing. You can directly help Palestinians by buying from them and helping them take economic power back.

The above are some examples of the beautiful and high quality products available at Shoppalestine.org including their honestly addictive Olive wood series and stunning embroidered goods (just to name a few).

!!! Hadeel.org is a UK alternative !!!

Similar and equally beautiful products here too^

You can also donate to one of the emergency appeals here:

these are great websites thank you so much for sharing!

another one to check out is watan palestine - it's a palestinian-owned art studio dedicated to palestinian culture. they own offices in chicago as well as amman in jordan and they have the most gorgeous art, jewelry, home decor, clothing, accessories etc. i think almost everything is handmade, and they have detailed product descriptions for everything

also, if anyone's interesting in purchasing an original keffiyeh produced in palestine by palestinians definitely check out hirbawi especially their where to buy page if you're interested in knowing how to place an order to your location. the keffiyeh is such an important symbol of palestinian self-determination + solidarity, and purchasing directly from the hirbawi family would be incredibly meaningful

Nintendo says don’t be greedy. They sued a husband and wife for $12 million for having a ROM site. They lock in game content behind amiibos. For example, Fusion Mode in Metroid: Samus Returns was locked behind an amiibo which is priced at $30 at GameStop. They locked Mew behind a $50 pay wall in Let’s Go. Until recently, they would copyright claim gameplay videos and take the revenue from it for themselves. The app Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is heavily monetized.

Nintendo wants people to believe that they are the friendly gaming company. They have always been hyper aggressive about their IP and are adopting similar monetizing strategies of the “greedy developers.”

Remember that Pfizer could make the vaccine formula open source at any moment. they could even sell the rights to the US government at a king’s ransom. Doing so would let other pharma companies produce doses, and potentially end this thing 10x faster. But they won’t. Instead, they’re about to become unimaginably wealthy.

Also remember that the Pharmaceutical industry, and by extension the US government, has a vested interest in NOT preventing future pandemics.

Even as the virus spread in January and February this year, many “Big Pharma” firms were reluctant to enter the race for a vaccine. They knew from previous epidemics that research is generally expensive, slow and prone to failure. What, they asked, if the coronavirus simply went away, as the Sars virus did only a few years ago? Even if research created new knowledge, the firms would be left with apparently worthless investments.

Two things changed the bosses’ minds.

First, as the virus spread around the world to become a pandemic, the size of the potential market for a vaccine grew enormously. Then came scientific predictions that the coronavirus could become a permanent feature, a recurring threat to the whole of humanity. If true, that would mean people will need not only a one-time vaccination, but potentially a lifetime of regular top-ups. The three drug giants that sell the world vaccines for common flu—Sanofi, GlaxoSmithKline and Seqirus—know what that means. Together they have flu jab sales worth up to £4 billion a year. Now Big Pharma’s financial analysts predicted there could be £7.22 billion in global sales of Covid-19 vaccines in 2021, and much more to follow.

Second, governments desperate to avoid lockdowns and the risks to profits that follow, decided to hand over astronomical sums to the pharmaceutical industry. The money was a bribe to persuade them to them to invest in research, development and manufacturing. Some of the wealthiest companies in the world, as well as some smaller start‑ups, were handed billions of dollars by the US government in “Operation Warp Speed”. AstraZeneca got £900 million, Pfizer £1.4 billion and Sanofi/GlaxsoSmithKline £1.5 billion. In Britain, the government-initiated Vaccine Taskforce ploughed some £33.6 billion of public money into a mixture of public and private sector research groups. Various universities, and firms such as Novavax, Johnson and Johnson and Fujifilm Diosynth, all received funding. This rush of money not only ensured that research started, but also secured for the state millions of doses any potential vaccine. Now heavily funded by the public purse, pharmaceutical companies with potential vaccines could grab a double win. Moderna, whose trial drug claims near 95 percent effectiveness, was able to claim over £1.8 billion from Operation Warp Speed. It is now planning to sell its vaccine for up to £45 an injection—more than ten times the price of some of its rivals. Its total production cost, including research, was just £18 per vial.

David Mitchell, founder of Patients for Affordable Drugs, a US campaign group, says, “Moderna already admitted American taxpayers financed 100 percent of this vaccine. Now the company has the gall to turn around and charge us the highest price of any vaccine maker.

“Asking the government to assume all risk for research, development, and production and then showing no restraint in pricing—that is the very definition of profiteering on a pandemic.”

i hate the tech industry so much. FUCK apple. i hate minimalism and sleekness. oooohhh  we made this computer the thickness and weight of a piece of construction paper. you cant plug anything into it and it has 2 gb of storage space. ooooh it has no power button isnt that conceptual? look at how sleek it is. its battery lasts 5 minutes and if you touch it with any more force than the gentlest whisper of a rose petal it will shatter and we intentionally designed it to be impossible to repair on your own. it will break on its own in a year tops. ooh its so sleek and efficient

Apparently a bunch of celebrities are donating money and asking others to donate to a "charity" called Next In Autism because Mark Rober shared a video about his autistic son.

DO NOT DONATE TO NEXT IN AUTISM THEY SUPPORT EUGENICS

YOUR MONEY WILL NOT GO TOWARDS HELPING AUTISTIC PEOPLE

A majority of their finances go towards "curing and preventing" autism as well as ABA therapy (which gay conversion therapy was based off of)

Here is a Twitter thread with a lot of good information about this charity and how it's no better than Autism Speaks

And while you're here take a look at some charities that are actually led and run by autistics

now that florida legislators have legalized child molestation because they hate trans people so much, i think its long long past time we bring back political assassination.

anyone who voted for this shit deserves to have their skull caved in, full stop. no excuse.

This is fucking sick. Fuck Florida.

this shouldn’t have to be said, but “Florida” didn’t vote for this. republican senators in florida did. the people of florida are the ones who are going to suffer for this. its the legislators who should be rightfully blamed for this, not florida as a whole

Y'all when the Trump admin was talking about herd immunity this time last year: "GONNA SACRIFICE PEOPLE TO THE ECONOMY! GONNA GET US ALL KILLED!"

Y'all when the Biden admin talks about herd immunity now: "Mmm hmm... Seems reasonable."

So funny to me how people (read: liberals) took this as anti-vaxxer bullshit. If I wanted y'all to not get vaccinated or shove crystals up your ass to avoid the 5G waves that activate the microchips in your vaccinated bodies, I would have said that.

What I'm pointing out is that Trump and Biden's covid responses only differentiate in that Biden himself wears a mask and isn't openly hoarding vaccines.

The vaccine itself cannot provide herd immunity because it lacks broad levels of sterilizing immunity. All it can do is hopefully keep vaccinated people who do get infected out of the hospital. You can still get and spread covid even when vaccinated. Your viral load is lower, but you still have one. It, anecdotally, lessens long haul symptoms but does not eliminate them (nor do we fully understand long-haul symptoms seeing as they range from mild respiratory issues to cardiovascular issues to early-onset dementia to blood clots and strokes and we're only a year into this so we really don't have any idea how long infection will effect people or what their future medical needs will be and seeing as we have the worst medical system in the world this will lead to death and further expansion of the medical-debtor class). These protections lessen for each instance of untraced infection as the virus continues to run rampant across most of the world and it mutates rapidly and unpredictably.

Children are largely still unvaccinated and the Biden CDC has twice lessened distancing and restrictions for public schools. This isn't even "Everyone goes back to work 6 feet apart" this is "everyone goes back to work three feet apart it's not a big deal man don't worry about it" which is far from "listening to science" as Biden promised all of 2020. He and the Democratically controlled legislature have added means testing to what meager financial support we are given and have made millions of those made jobless, homeless, and impoverished by the pandemic unelligable for support without jumping through bureaucratic hoops to prove that despite having had an income in 2019 they do not have one now. He also refuses to implement mask mandates because apparently some governors right to be bossy is more important than containing the spread of a deadly and debilitating virus.

If you aren't at the very least critical of this lack of action and support by the federal government you are part of the problem.
