ultimately the overall thing that pisses me off the most about tlj is how much of a fuck you to fans it is, especially to fans who have spent ages theorizing about its content and were excited about it continuing the storyline of tfa
like, oh, you like debating rey’s parentage? let’s have it revealed in an anti climactic scene that doesn’t actually confirm or deny anything because kylo could easily be lying to her.
oh, you’re looking forward to the return of one of the most iconic characters in all of cinema? let’s fuck up his characterization so badly that he is unrecognizable, and then sell that to you as the gritty truth.
you enjoyed the representation of characters of color? let’s completely downplay the character who was one of the two leads in tfa, give him a storyline that contributes almost nothing to the overall plot, and backpedal on his characterization so much that he goes through the same arc. let’s make the other characters of color one dimensional and stereotypical, or give them roles that again, don’t influence the plot in any significant way.
you love carrie fisher and wanted to see her last performance? let’s put her in a coma for almost the entirety of the movie and replace her with some other random woman.
you’re curious to know more about the big bad and his backstory? let’s never address why he’s so strong in the force, where he comes from, how he came to power, or what his methods were at all.
you love the idea of a female lead who kicks ass? let’s put the girl who saw her father figure killed by the villain and was hunted and tortured by said villain in the role of the person trying to turn him back to the light without any explanation of why she should trust him.
the entire movie just reeks of this “haha you’re such a dumbass for actually caring about things and putting your love into them!” rhetoric and it’s such utter bullshit. like it completely and utterly throws away every single question that tfa raised and built up as important, and more than that, shits on you for daring to wonder about those questions
I’m here for people finally acknowledging that Finn had as much as a bond with Han Solo as Rey did. I have seen a lot of people go on about how his death affected people like Rey, Luke and Leia. But Finn rarely gets mentioned as someone who was also visually impacted by his death. Han Solo was one of the few people that treated Finn as an equal. We not only saw Finn feeling comfortable enough to show Han that he was unsure and afraid, but still wanted to save his friend. But Han knowing that Finn was lying about being Resistance, never once outed him to Rey or anybody else (not even Chewie). Instead he made it known to Finn that he knew the truth and waited for Finn, in his own time to confess.
When Finn said he wanted to leave, Han didn’t try to guilt trip him to stay and fight the First Order. He didn’t judge Finn’s past as a strormtrooper. He respected his choice. When Finn returned he accepted him back without questioning. And when Finn offered to go to Starkiller Base he accepted his help….again without question. Even if realistically anyone else could have distrusted Finn considering his background.
Anyway, Han and Finn’s relationship was important and people shouldn’t ignore it. I wish there were more metas and stories actually exploring it and dealing with how Finn dealt with the loss of a good friend and paternal figure. Because Han was much as a paternal figure to Finn as he was for Rey.
Look, whether you like the prequels or not, you have to admit that our lives are enriched by the classic memes they have given us. What would the world be without Anakin’s sand rant? Obi-Wan having the high ground? Darth Vader’s epic ‘no’? That’s not a world I’d want to live in.
things i want from the last jedi:
- finn to use the force
- finn to be a jedi
- someone other than rey and luke use the force, and it’s finn
- a third jedi, named finn
- finn undergoing jedi training
- jedi knight finn
- a jedi who is called finn
rey had talked to kylo ren for a grand total of five (5) minutes before she laser targeted his biggest insecurity and called out his whole life as a pathetic member of the white boy serial killer fandom shes such a good role model for girls
each generation of jedi is progressively less prepared for their first duel
“Stop calling Kylo Ren whiney, let men be emotional”
Ok but there’s a difference between men allowing themselves to be vulnerable and a violent beta male edgelord who spends their free time playing Hatred
you know who was an emotional and vulnerable man without having violent tantrums? FINN. stop looking for excuses to humanize “"damaged”“ white male fascists and murderers at the expense of well developed black protagonists lmao
Kylo Ren is toxic masculinity. Represses his feelings, uses violence instead of words to deal with his problems, literally wears a mask over his feelings.
Finn is a rejection of it. Emotional, affectionate, rejects violence, rejects the mask.
just realized that the first time rey and finn saw each other after parting ways on takodana was on starkiller base. rey didn’t even know that finn hadn’t escaped to the outer rim. she’d probably just accepted that he, like so many others, had left her. didn’t even consider the fact that anyone would be coming to rescue her on starkiller. and yet… he came back for her
you know what’s funny though? poe didn’t think anyone would be coming to rescue him, either. he knew the risks and he went on the mission and he was captured. he knew that nobody from the resistance was coming to save him. but finn miraculously showed up and got him out… basically finn is the hero and driving force behind this trilogy
Honestly one of the most underrated moments for Finn was him telling Maz off for calling him a coward. He doesn’t insult her, doesn’t raise her voice, doesn’t get the least bit violent or threatening, just holds her gaze and tells her she has no right to judge him.
Because he’s had things like that drilled into him his entire life. You’re a coward for not fighting, not killing, not leaving your squadmates behind. You have to be the perfect soldier, the perfect stormtrooper or you’re worthless. He has panic attacks. He’s scared and he’s running because he honestly doesn’t know what else to do, and throughout that conversation he’s at best confused and at worst frightened by Maz. But she implies that he’s a coward, and he calmly but firmly rejects it.
Finn has been subject to horrific abuse that has shaped who he is but at every opportunity he can,no matter how small, he is refusing to let the First Order control him anymore and honestly that is beautiful.
ANYWAYS, Finn is a fully realized person. He’s not an extension of Poe or Rey, and his personality is not build on his relationships with them. He is not a “soft innocent smol” but he isn’t a brute you can demonize for the sake of racism either. He’s a person with trauma and emotions and a goddamn personality outside of your shitty, antiblack headcanons. Do me a favor this year by growing up and realizing that Black characters are human beings in their own right.
like can we talk about how fandom treats latino men? specifically the blatant and unapologetic sexualization of them?
poe dameron. cassian andor. gabriel reyes. jesse mccree. james vega. reyes vidal. raphael santiago. lance mcclain.
(and before you argue that jesse isn’t canonically latino, every single latino jesse fic/post/art comes hand in hand with some transparent “latin lover” bullshit where he sweet talks someone in spanish or uses his ~latin charm~ in some way or another)
and this is specifically about the treatment in lgbt fandom spaces. you guys aren’t immune to perpetuating racist tropes and you do it without any sort of acknowledgement or desire to change. even if there’s been some retrospection into the poorly written bilingual characters in fic recently, yet people continue to write and spread posts about every other racist aspect of the latin lover trope.
making them all promiscuous and overtly sexual? making them all “rough and dirty in bed”? giving them all “dirty mouths” and describing them with “deep, low voices” and talking about their accents using sexual descriptors? these all tie back to racist tropes that contribute to the sexualization of latino men.
it’s not subtle. it’s not “sexy”. it’s tiring and the lack of acknowledgement that it’s happening outside of reblogging a post about it every once in a while is really fucking transparent
lando calrissian was aware that the empire was capable of mass genocide so he saved his fucking planet and then turned around and saved leia, chewie and the droids, as well as han in the next episode.
Okay but also what he actually does is a bit more nuanced and so compelling? Because his original plan is to hang out on Bespin, with his life and duties and try to keep the Empire “far away from here,” where it’s somebody else’s problem and his people can live in peace. He knows the Empire is capable of bad things, maybe of wiping out a whole planet (how did they explain Alderaan, in the news?), and so he’s going to take a conservative route and do what he can to keep his new people safe. Like, he’s not making bad choices, he’s trying to protect people, but he definitely starts out with a “don’t rock the boat” mentality. Even if that means selling out his old friendly rival.
And then when the Empire comes and ruins his life anyway, and he realizes that no amount of isolation or cooperation is going to keep people safe when the galaxy is being controlled by someone who wants only power, unlimited power and whose cronies are here for the cash and trade deals, he goes OKAY THEN and JOINS THE FUCK UP, getting himself a generalship and putting all his skills to work making open rebellion and bringing the battle to the Death Star itself. That is some serious commitment.
all the news about the last Jedi is making me so nervous like what the hell could the big reveal be? what piece of sw lore could still be the biggest reveal in franchise history
Chewbacca could speak Basic this whole time he just likes fucking with people
wow i sure do love my BEAUTIFUL SON FINN who is the MALE LEAD of the star wars sequel trilogy and is also FORCE SENSITIVE
