So Flowey says Sans caused him his fair share of resets and it’s generally assumed they were death resets, but what if they were bs Sierra game dead-end resets instead

Begin montage. Sans lies down next to a barred pit in Snowdin, idly reading a car magazine.
Sans: hey, looks like you're caught in an inescapable pit trap there. Flowey: /How do I get out/ Sans: i dunno, you still got a fuzzy pickle on you? you know, the ones you find around the dump. Flowey: /Of course I don't. You idiot. That was *literally garbage*/ Sans: huh, that's too bad, if you had one i was gonna help you out. oh well. better luck next time, huh?
Scene. Sans ponders coyly while Flowey gives him the most exasperated glare he can give.
Sans: yeah, i heard if you give the captain of the guard a box of truffleruffles, she'll show you where all the human souls are. but, i already gave her the last one in the underground bout an hour ago. guess you're too late. some things down here don't wait for no one, you know?
Scene. Sans calls Flowey from his couch while Papyrus hands him a bag of chips.
Sans: stuck in another puzzle, huh? the one with all the mice? well, did you sign and mail that mouse eviction form? Flowey: /The *what*??/ Sans: you know, the mouse eviction form i gave ya back in snowdin. Flowey: /You didn't give me any form!!/ Sans: oh… huh, musta forgot. oops.
Scene. In front of a puzzle in the Ruins, Flowey holds up his phone with two thorny vines, and yells into the reciever.
Flowey: /The door's shut and it won't open!! It won't even let me put in the code again!!/ Sans: you sure you put it in right? it's red green yellow yellow. Flowey: /You said it was yellow yellow green red!!!/ Sans: i did? oops. try it the other way. Flowey: /It won't let me try again you idiot. It's locked me out permanently!!!/ Sans: huh, no kidding. welp. my bad. Flowey: /I'm gonna *kill you-*/
Scene. Flowey pops up from the ground, for once looking hopeful and not yelling.
Flowey: Okay. I finally made friends with everyone, I've got the heat-sensitive brooch/key and I fixed the Sun Device, all I need is to get that hot dog from Sans before he leaves forever and-
Sans' normal post in Snowdin simply has a sign reading "Out to Lunch"
Flowey: /Oh come on!!!/

it’s so funny that Papyrus tells about Flowey to all the people he is close to, Flowey purposely never shows up around anyone else and doesn’t want people to know about him, yet he keeps befriending Papyrus and Papyrus immediately goes tell his brother and his boss about a flower friend he made every single time
i know undertale is like, almost a decade old at this point, even older if you count the kickstarter’s age, but i still cant get over how flowey/asriel is literally such a cool fucking character. he’s like a player that plays a game too many times and stops being able to see the characters as people as their brain sees them acting the same and doing the same things on each replay and how he loses his sympathy bc of that. and this makes him come across as a typical pure evil antagonist at first, but then you learn his backstory, and it’s all just, aghhhhhhhh. and then you learn in the genocide route that he helped people at first, he used to be kind, but he got bored, and how that contrasts the player on the genocide route with flowey, the genocide route where the player is now in the role of the pure evil villain, just like flowey was.
and also i love how the guy is literally just an edgy kid. like, he comes across as an adult at first, but the guy’s just like one of those cynical little kids who only wants to see the worst in everything. and how that’s portrayed in the true pacifist route where he gives himself this edgy name and transformation sequence that feels like something a kid would come up with. tho the idea that he’s a kid does kinda come into question when you consider all the resets he’s been on, but even still he never got to grow up.
i wanna hug this lil dude so badly, even in flower form, he deserves a hug.
i fucking love this dude, he’s kinda like a pure evil antagonist, but actually has a backstory that makes you feel sorry for him and make his actions feel understandable, even if he can feel like some insane cartoon supervillain, his actions still feel reasonable with his backstory in mind. it’s like taking the idea of an unrealistically evil villain and asking yourself what couldve possibly made them that way
and his whole life as asriel with chara as a sibling. aghhhhhhhh, i love it.
and how in the beginning of the game he probably hasnt even realized his powers are missing yet, and that may just be a small thing but i find it a fun small recontextualization. that in this moment where you seem like you’re falling into his trap, he doesnt even realize that you have far more power over him than he thinks. and something i never even really thought about for a while is how he probably had a bit of a mental breakdown realizing his powers are missing sometime between your first and second time meeting him, and how he probably had to get himself all ready to talk with you again and come across as confident and threatening. like, there’s no way he just brushed off the fact that his powers are missing so easily, his plan to use you to retrieve the souls probably helped him feel better, but there’s no way this dude just brushed off losing the powers he’s been relying on for who knows how long so easily. he definitely got all angry and scared at his missing powers sometime between your first and second meeting, for at least a little while.
honestly, i feel like undertale didnt have enough of him. he deserved more screentime imo. which is why i was really happy to see his characterizationin done so well in undertale yellow, i fucking loved how that game built on his character. and his whole boss fight in that game somehow outdoing his boss fights in the original game. and how a lot of his attacks involve self harm in some way. and how he acts as the save points for the game so you get to hear a lot more from him throughout the game. i feel like undertale yellow gave me some characterization for him that i really fucking needed.
genuinely one of my favourite characters in all of fiction. would love to have a conversation with this lil guy.

Flowey/Asriel Japanese Translation Notes
(Given to me to spread by a good friend who speaks Japanese; enjoy this smol babby child’s way of speaking)
✿ His greeting is “harō”. ❢(Means that yep, Asgore says it too.) 「ハロー!ボクはフラウィ。おはなのフラウィさ!」 ✿ Uses “boku” to refer to himself and “kimi” to refer to Frisk. 「ボクを にがしたって なにも かわらない。おわらせたいなら ボクを ころすしかない。」 「キミの たいせつな なかまも ころしちゃうよ?」 ✿ He still uses “boku”/“kimi” throughout the Omega Flowey fight. 「ボクは このせかいの かみ なんだよ」 「キミが しぬとこを みてくれないなんて!」 ✿ Switches to “ore”/“omae” during most of the Hyperdeath Asriel fight. 「やめろ!おれは ひとりでいい!」 ✿ Switches back to “boku”/“kimi” as he loses the will to fight. 「ボクが どうして こんなことを するか わかる…?」 「キミは とくべつだから だよ…」 ✿ Uses a lot of “-chau” conjugations. ❢(Chau verbs have multiple meanings, such as referring to completed actions, expressing emotion, being cute or mischievous, and so on. It’s generally more childish or feminine.) ✿ Frequently ends sentences with the particle “sa”. ❢(“Sa” is a masculine ending particle.) 「LVっていうのは LOVE つまり 「あい」のことさ!」 「それより もっと たのしいことを やるつもりさ。」 「…まあ ボクの 「いっしょう」は もうすぐ おわっちゃうけどさ。」 ✿ Sometimes uses “zo” ending particle in times of distress. ❢(“Zo” is also a masculine ending particle, more forceful than “sa”.) 「こんなことは ゆるさないぞ!ボクに したがえ!」 「アクシュミだぞ!!」」 ✿ Frequently ends questions with the particle “no”. ❢(“No” used this way makes it an informal question; the particle is used more by women and children.) 「ボクを とめられると おもってるの?」 「どうして ボクを にがしたの?」 「じんせいって そんなに りふじんな ものなの?」 「どうして そんな山に のぼったの?」 ✿ Frisk is a “baka”. 「キミ… は… ホントに バカだね」 ✿ His giggle is “fufufu”. 「フフフ…」 ✿ He says “tousan”/“kaasan” for mom/dad, outside of taunting Frisk where he uses “papa”/“mama”. 「「パパ!ママ!」「だれか たすけて!」…」 「「とうさん!かあさん!だれか!」…って いくら さけんでも… だれも こなかった」 「とうさんと かあさんのこと… よろしくね。」 ✿ Uses “nee” to get attention in calm situations, “oi” when upset or scared. ✿ When supposing something, he often uses “desho”, but sometimes uses “daro”/“darou”. ❢(They mean about the same, just “desho” is softer.) ✿ Uses “mono”/“mon” a few times at the ends of sentences. ❢(It’s used to explain things/reasons, and is used mainly by women and children.) 「キャラは もう ずっとまえに いなくなっちゃったもん。」 「だって ボクは キミの しんゆう だもの!」 ✿ Mildly swears at a point (though it’s not much of a swear really). 「くっそぉぉ… なんでだ!どうして!!」 ✿ At a point when very irritated he slurs a few syllables together. ❢(“Fuzaketeru no?” becomes “fuzaketenno?”.) 「ふざけてんの?バカなの?」 ✿Refers to himself as the “purinsu” of this world’s future in that particular line. 「なぜなら ボクは この せかいの みらいを になう プリンスだから。」
On 'saving' Asriel
I think the thing that gets me the most about the 'ralsei and/or deltarune is a creation that comes from our (as players) desires to save asriel, based on what little we really know of him' theory is like... If we did true pacifist, we already saved Asriel.
Let's talk about the epilogue.
that found family post finally expressed what drives me insane about undertale fandom now, which is that people wildly misinterpret that chara had a found family with the dreemurrs (objectively true) and that frisk could call toriel mom or think of asgore as their dad (both optional but possible) to mean that chara and/or frisk are LITERALLY dreemurrs and asgore/toriel’s children and asriel’s sibling.
which, as i’ve discussed many times, is ludicrous and in no way the intention of the text. but that found family post expresses why - what needs to be understood is that EVEN IF gerson was not misinterpreting by calling chara one of asgore and toriel’s “children” and EVEN IF frisk calling toriel “mom” or asking about being asgore’s child were not both optional and EVEN IF chara calling asgore “mr. dad guy” showed they thought of him as a dad rather than not being sure what to call him, all that really proves is that chara and frisk have a found family relationship with the dreemurrs, not that they were literally adopted.
like the posts say, found families can call each other “mom,” “dad,” “brother,” “sister,” and so on. a found family can be many many people - frisk could just as easily see undyne and alphys as their aunts, or papyrus and sans as their uncles, despite undyne/alphys, papyrus/sans, and toriel/asgore having no actual biological or legal connection to each other. i don’t see chara as comfortable with the idea of “mom” or “dad” or “brother” for the dreemurrs, but even if they were to use those terms, that wouldn’t make them part of a nuclear family with the dreemurrs unless that was something CHARA wanted as well.
in other words, the idea that chara, frisk, and asriel are literally siblings is a complete misinterpretation of the ideas of close friendship and found family that are core to undertale, and people need to stop thinking that “chara dreemurr” or “frisk dreemurr” is canon just because of fandom or wiki entries. it’s not.
Great post! This 100% articulates something I’ve felt for a long time. While I do personally consider Chara as part of the Dreemurr fam, it drives me nuts how people act like Frisk being adopted is canon and Frisk being siblings with Chara and Asriel is canon rather than just… a really popular headcanon, because it leads to people bullying those who have differing interpretations. I have seen people post “because this is a popular headcanon, it might as well BE canon and if you don’t see it that way, you are wrong,” and that really rubs me the wrong way because calling Toriel mom is a choice. Staying with Toriel is a choice. Places to go is a valid interpretation, too. Frisk being taken in by another monster is valid, too. Or Frisk having a family to return to but still being close to monsters. I see it like… people have their favored interpretation of Undertale, and the collective fandom has built up a lot of ideas that have just kinda been unanimously accepted in bigger circles, but much like with Gaster speculation, I think there needs to be room for other voices and other takes on Frisk’s relationship with the monsters. We can have a Frisk who is uncomfortable with Toriel’s doting even though she means well, for instance. Frisks who do jerk pacifist are valid, too. So many ways to view a character , so I wish some people in the fandom would be less aggressive about that sorta thing.
#really the ambiguity of their relationship becomes so blatant when you confront it with the deltarune version of the dreemurrs #where kris is explicitly textually and narratively set as “human child formally adopted by the dreemurrs” #where there are multiple instances of kris thinking asriel as their brother. asgore as their father. toriel as their mother (tags from @carlyraejepsans)
This is a relevant, essential and true series of posts, and I wanted to jump off it a bit and call attention to a particular part of the phenomenon it describes and how it interacts with Deltarune’s theming/decisions; these tags are a great jumping-off point.
The fallen child, of Undertale, is ambiguously the Dreemurrs’ ward, their adoptive child, a very long-term houseguest, etc., etc. The general monster public understands them as a Dreemurr and Asriel’s sibling, but the general monster public — as we can observe from the True Lab, No Mercy et al. — doesn’t know what actually happened.
Nevertheless, we can observe that this understanding of the child/goat dynamic was widely adopted (so to speak) by Undertale fandom, which is where we get “Chara Dreemurr” from — both the name and a particular, widespread take on the character.
I’ve written a little about Deltarune as the reunion of old friends. The scenario set up for us at the start of Chapter One seems pretty unambiguous at first blush, and — what’s more — it’s a scenario I, at least, have seen in a million after-canon fics. We’re on the surface! The human has grown up some! Everyone has their own lives here (in roles that make sense to us, given who they were Underground)!
And Toriel as mom is core to those fics. Maybe my sampling is biased by my preferences, but I don’t think I’ve seen a single one where Frisk isn’t either immediately adopted by Toriel or sent briefly into foster care or to an abusive biofamily, then rescued by monsters. “I have places to be” isn’t a real option, it’s Frisk’s issues manifesting. (This is understandable and I’m not judging the trend. The surface is so low-res, and Frisk’s life there is so opaque to us, that imagining a happy family for them outside the existing dynamic we have would be a lot of effort for little payoff. Also these fics wreck me emotionally, so.)
I think being woken up by Toriel for school drops us into that mindset. It’s an after-canon story. Here’s mom; here’s all our friends; there’s dad. And it’s also the mindset that gets so effectively disturbed in the town walkaround section of Chapter One, when we realize that these aren’t our old friends, not really. Alphys and Undyne haven’t even talked to each other here! Bratty and Catty hate each other! Gerson’s dead! MTT’s dysphoric! They’re here, but they don’t remember us the way we expected.
Within that dynamic, Toriel and Asgore are — I think — some of the most securely fit into their roles. Alphyne was so core to both characters’ stories that losing it feels uncanny, but Toriel as Mom and Asgore as Dad/Epic Divorce Man, even if they’re never strictly canon, are so present that reifying those positions doesn’t really disturb us. Their dynamic with each other is largely unchanged: hostility with faint overtures of peace.
But the parts of the Dreemurrs that do stick out are, I think, consequences of their narrative pigeonholes. Specifically, they’ve gotten a little more, I don’t know… sitcom nuclear family.
The thing about Toriel not in keeping with our remembered Undertale characterization is that she’s deeply religious and a bit of a moral guardian — i.e. visiting church for a week straight after Asriel kissed a girl, editing Alphys’s screen saver so the buff superheroes aren’t making contact any longer, Sadie Hawkman’s, etc. The moral guardian thing is canon to Undertale (“Not in front of the human!!”) and we could reasonably derive the religiosity from that, given there’s a church now, but it still feels off, at least to me, and I suspect to other players too, because… who focuses on that aspect of Toriel, writing their future fics?
But it perfectly fits a Sitcom Mom. Tell me you can’t see Marge Simpson in the genetics of that characterization. The ways in which Toriel in Deltarune is jagged and difficult to reconcile are manifestations of the way she’s been fit into a less ambiguous position, in a fashion that calls attention to that fit.
Likewise, Asgore. Asgore is Epic Divorce Man. Asgore is Mr. Dad Guy. He’s a bumbling, good-hearted loser, loving but largely incompetent… with a certain gravitas — as the Bergentrückung, simultaneously gentle and brutal, a king waging a doomed war for the sake of his people — that gets dispelled in True Pacifist and humanizes him without erasing the costs of his actions.
In Deltarune he’s undignified from the start, in what feels like continuity from Undertale… and that has real, material consequences for him! He’s in dire financial straits, at least in part because he’s a florist — the thing he does in the Undertale post-canon cutscene, the thing he’s doing when we first met him, which he repeats almost exactly in his store in Deltarune, this core motif baked into his character via buttercups and golden flower tea and etc. and etc., a device we use to recognize him — and he’s not good enough at it to function financially! Hell, he’s losing his store in a month!
Deltarune’s Asgore does his goofy “eggs-husband” thing like the oldest-school style of Sitcom Dad, who messes up but has a good heart… and being Sitcom Dad has wrecked his life, because he’s been reduced to the part of his character — his relationship with his family, particularly Toriel and Asriel and their human ward — where in Undertale he failed most badly, and is most consistently defined by his failure. Because that’s what he has left, within the narrow paradigm available to him, within the reunion of old friends, to be slotted into that position of Father in which we know him and love him as incompetent.
This post has dragged on a bit so I’ll bring it around and say that Deltarune is definitely interested in troubling our relationship with “Chara Dreemurr,” the fallen child , albeit subtly. It does that through characters whose relationships are being shaped — and deformed — by our expectations, nostalgia and desires, either explicitly (“Nice to see you again,” we say to a man Kris has never met) or implicitly, through these characters constrained by (and uncanny within) the roles we’ve imagined for them in our long seclusion, the last one out of the Underground. It’s a lot of fun, and I’m excited to see how this theme pans out!

#oooooooooh this is such a good analysis of both undertale fanon #and also of the differences between ut toriel and asgore and dr toriel and asgore #that i hadn't quite managed to articulate
#it's probably obvious to everyone but asriel is ALSO kinda sitcommed #he's the big brother! he's the golden child! the perfect son and friend who's just out of the picture enough that he can remain idealized #and perfect! #he's the perfect big bro for kris! he's bratty AND catty's crush #and got up to highschool tv show romance hijinks with them! #he's pizzapants' best buddy! he was a good boy who sang in the choir!
#and this is also a continuation from what we saw of him in undertale and how many fanfics continued his character #the goldenhearted pacifist and idealistic young prince! too good for this sinful earth! #i've always thought that BOTH dr asriel and ralsei are 'responses' to the fanon asriel #specifically the fanon asriel in all those 'save asriel' fics that used to be really popular #where asriel and flowey are expressly different people
#and frisk only knew asriel for basically five minutes where he wasn't trying to kill them #but his plight grabs their heart AND the player's so intensely that they go to incredibly lengths to give him a second chance #or to fix goat mom and goat dad's marriage
#and now asriel is here! he's the best bro in the world! everyone loves him! he's off at college doing exciting amazing things! #it's still not enough to keep toriel and asgore together #he's still not here because presumably he's happy and successful and alive but we don't SEE him being all those things #we miss him and kris misses him and all we and kris have to replace him is other people's memories #and the memories he and kris would share that other people tell us
Papyrus and Flowey are the aromantics of the friend group of course they stick together
undertale: yeah so there is this character named flowey that used to feel love but doesn't anymore even if he tries he doesn't feel love anymore and he is very scared and depressed about this and doesn't talk to anyone and thinks he is broken and life is not worth it. what a tragic made up scenario am i right everyone. anyway he plays god to distract himself for his suffering and blah blah blah things happen he feels love for a little while again but actually ends up not feeling love at the end! And we later see him have a healthier happy life even if he doesn't feel love! What a crazy made up scenario right guys
the players about to realize they are loveless:
[Image ID: A screencap of a yellow Muppet looking forward, followed by one of it glancing to the side. /End ID]
I do think both Flowey and Chara can reflect 'the player', but they act very differently, and would reflect very different types of players.
Flowey wants to learn everything, to be entertained. Chara wants to have all the high scores, to win. Flowey explores every single route, eventually growing bored and seeing the world as numbers. Chara grinds, pretends at pure apathy and distance very well, and doesn't see a point to replaying.
When Chara criticizes a player of 'perverted sentimentality', they'd probably level the same criticism at Flowey. And from some of Flowey's dialogue, it sounds like they may have hated the power of Reset even in life.
Alternatively, I think they might be in conversation with the player in slightly different ways: Chara at the end of No Mercy is the means by which the game says 'look what you've done'. Flowey in every route is the means by which the game says 'look what you ARE'.
(Chara may represent the sort of player who may choose the No Mercy route, but ultimately Flowey is the main player-metaphor and Chara only truly appears to cast judgement, so I'm once again thinking it feels? A little weird? To place Flowey Mannerisms on them?)
Sometimes I sit down and think about how sad the Omega Flowey fight really is.
Because you take this small, terrified dude and give him nearly infinite power, and throw him in front of a smaller, horrified child.
The OF fight is obviously a fight where Flowey tries his god damn hardest to make Frisk as scared and helpless as he can, and what better way to do it if not by using everything that scared himself?
All the human bits, the eyes all over, the grotesque fleshy head… He’s terrified of humans, and it’s completely understandable after what he went through- he was brutally killed by them on his first time in the surface. All the machinery (especially the screen from the true lab)… The place where he was created, the place that started his suffering. The plants all over, rough, spiky, sharp… His new body, an unfamiliar plant body he found himself in after living as a soft, furry monster for his whole life.
And don’t forget the whole “Call for help, I dare you. Scream into the darkness: Mommy! Daddy! Anybody, help!” “… But nobody came.” bit (iirc, I’m doing this without ref)… Especially when you take into consideration what he tells us in the geno run- how he woke up and couldn’t feel his arms or legs, screaming for help for god knows how long… But nobody came.
And the worst part in all of this?
You know at that point, where Omega Flowey’s defense drops to 0, and his attacks grow weaker, slower, clumsier? You know how it happens after you call for help, after you [ACT]? How the souls come to your aid…?
It’s not fair, is it. Why do YOU get help, when he didn’t? Why do YOU get to live, when he was left for his own devices? Isn’t it kill or BE killed? Why are they helping you?
He most likely was having a breakdown. He most likely was desperate to do anything to stop you. He most likely didn’t want to believe that in this cruel world, he never got any help when he was scared and alone, and now you are.
Just a thought.
goddamit this fandom doesn’t stop punching you in the gut, does it?
Y'know, one aspect of the new Chara lore that just dropped that strikes me (besides uhhh, all of it lol) is that what we know about Chara for sure just really reinforces over and over again, how they really were a little kid. I know people headcanon them different ages because it makes sense to them or it seems to match their behavior or w/e, but really, 9 is their favorite number?? .... they even have a favorite number that they've discussed (apparently at length)???
Like, look at their sprite (and Frisk's) and then look at Kris'. Literal babies. And so much stuff little idiosyncrasies about them doubles down on them having these very childish likes and habits, like them overfilling their glass ("for efficiency!!!") and proudly toting it around, spilling it everywhere. (And the narrator theory, how excited they get over the toy chest in Home: "Look at all these cool toys!" Honestly, how much they talk/narrate in general?? Kiddo's here to A) chatter about everything they see and B) make fun of you. They're doing the Simpsons' HA HA point and laugh, you just can't hear it.)
Seriously, imagine them standing at the front of a classroom and introducing themself with the little things we know about them: "My name is Chara. I really like reading and drawing and golden flowers, my favorite food is chocolate, and my favorite number is 9."
I think that gets lost sometimes, with how Asriel is very clearly a little kid because of how he acts in the VHS tapes and how serious and eloquent Chara is when we see them at the end of the Murder Fun Times route, it seems like sometimes people think of Chara as much older and more serious than Asriel. I know their in-game lore is dark as shit, but there's so many little things that keep underlining that they're really a little kid who got in way over their head. Like, I seriously doubt they're even in middle school.

He doubles over laughing before looking back up to give a menacing grin, and then straightens up to look into the background, where Frisk lies fallen down on their stomach. They push themself up with their arms and then stare as the battle menu appears (Banniv, Lv1, Hp 20/20, たたかう(Fight), こうどう(Act), アイテム(Item), みのがす(Mercy)) and we switch to a reverse shot to see Toriel, who clasps her hands as she kindles her fire magic, and looks up sadly before averting her gaze. Next is Papyrus, who stands confidently, gesturing with a closed fist before pointing at Frisk and unleashing a wall of bones. The Annoying Dog sits on one of them. Undyne creates a spear and pulls it behind her back, snarl turning into a grin as she draws a finger across her neck. Mettaton poses swiftly, moving his arms and legs before settling on holding out two pointing hand signs and raising an eyebrow in challenge as he is backlit by an array of spotlights. Alphys turns and nervously notices Frisk, covering her head with her hands as Endogeny looms behind her.
