Watchman Series Theory

I was thinking about the watchman series and one question that came to me was ‘what do all the items have in common?’

An obvious answer would be that they’re clothing items. As such, a fully assembled watchman series might make a full outfit.

But other than the nature of what the items are, their power and ability also come into question. The jinki in the story are all varied in what they are and what they can do, and are highly dependent on the user.  And despite the fact that we have yet to see all the watchman series in the story, I came up with an idea of the potential theme/basis of their powers.

My theory is that the watchman series abilities are based on the 5 senses.

***Also note that for the purpose of this theory, I believe the journal that Regto had on him was not a jinki, only a regular journal that had information on the watchman series***

Touch

Rudo’s gloves give him the ability to turn any broken item he touches into a weapon/tool he can fight with

Smell

Amo’s boots release a smell that alters a person’s perception based on memories making them easy to manipulate

Hearing

We don’t know what the corresponding watchman jinki is, but we do know that it is likely to be responsible for creating chokers that allow people to hear each other and communicate over long distance

Sight

CURRENTLY UNCONFIRMED

This one is only a theory but I believe Zodyl’s coat has a sight related ability based on the clues so far:

  • The ‘vision’ scene. Unsure if this was meant to be taken literally or just as visual metaphor, but it does give an implication that Zodyl was able to make Rudo see something that he wasn’t able to see himself simply based on a verbal suggestion
  • The comment from the information broker about Zodyl using the coat rarely, even in front of other vandals suggests that he might not want them to SEE the coat in action. It could be because seeing it would result in them being affected by whatever ability it generates
  • During his fight with Rudo there was some visual transformation happening. Hasn’t been explained so far, so unsure if it was incomplete, or if it was once again skewed/unreliable perception

Taste

This one has not been mentioned or implied in the story yet and is the odd one out, but once again we haven’t seen all the watchman jinki and all the other ones do fit the theme of 5 senses.

And since we know the watchman series can only be safely used by people who have something 'missing' in them, the jinki related to the senses could correspond with what the person symbolically lacks.

That being said, it is only a theory and I'm not feeling too strongly about whether it turns out true or not, but I do feel it would be a missed opportunity if the watchman abilities did not carry some thematic consistency between them.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

UPDATE: I WAS WRONG, BUT MY THEORY STILL HASN'T BEEN DISPROVEN

SO ZODYL'S COAT MANIFESTS THINGS BASED ON WHAT HE TASTES! YOU CRAZY BASTARD, SO YOU WEREN'T EATING COCKROACHES JUST CAUSE YOU'RE DERANGED (I believe he would probably still eat a cockroach even if he didn't have to for his jinki to work, that man is a freak)

black clover: crackhead theory and au

i am about to throw some more stupid ideas at you, some of which are a result of iconic convos with @silvyavan:

  • what is up with licita’s curse? here is what i PERSONALLY am accepting as canon in my heart. as per silv’s theories asta could very well be a half devil, which means that our bestie licita fucked a devil (to be more specific a devil named astaroth who is a supreme time devil again as per silv), good for her. so what happened is that astaroth the OG simp could partially manifest his ass in the human world for whatever reason where he met licita and was really smitten with her. so licita had this 8ft tall fuck off devil chasing her ass for god knows how long, waxing really cringe poetics about her, and licita, in the single most profound moment of stupidity thought that if she sleeps with him he will finally get what he wanted and give up. (spoiler: he didnt). so they do the horizontal tango and my man astaroth is now convinced that licita finally reciprocates his feelings and he’s already filling out the underworld's equivalent of marriage certificate while licita is asleep. she wakes up the next day and to her utter surprise this loser not only is still here but now he also believes that they’re getting married. she very obviously rejects him and astaroth in the moment of despair and rejection puts a curse on licita that will drain all life and magic from those around her, as the ultimate “if i can’t be near you, no one else can either” act of revenge. so licita now has this curse put on her and not long after she finds out she’s pregnant. asta obv comes out looking like your average ass human baby, but it doesn't mean shit cause licita already drained him off all magic while in womb and now she needs to give him so she doesnt drain his life too. (also with asta being half devil i choose to believe that life draining wouldn't affect him, because it is shown to be ineffective against devils, but licita obv wouldn't know that at the time)
  • and branching off this idea specifically I am also proposing you a crackhead au of “two and half devils” - basically what if licita didn’t reject astaroth after their night together and when she finds out she’s pregnant they’re basically doing a shotgun wedding with proper devil marriage binding and all that good stuff. the word ‘baby trapping’ gets replaced with ‘pulling an astaroth’ around Hage. with marriage pact to a human astaroth is technically ‘fully’ in the human world but is unable to use a lot of his magical power, but this is fine cause now he has a tiny wife and is about to have an even tinier baby. so the village of hage gets used to the fact that there is a 8ft tall demonic abomination living among them, because honestly, they already live next to devil skeleton, this might as well happen. asta is born (it only makes sense that he got named after his dad since he got all the looks from his mom) and the local devil is now gushing to anyone who will listen about how cute his baby boy is. some years later liebe gets yeeted into the human realm, licita finds him as normal and brings him home and announces to astaroth that they’re having another kid and just unseals liebe from one of her bottles. there are now 2 and half devils living in hage.

Detroit: Become Human - Ra9

You know when you get to that point when you’re so into something you get dreams about it? So I happened to have a dream about the origin of ra9, and although it was a bit chaotic as dreams tend to be I remembered most of it and polished some details, so here you go, my hot take on ra9.

This happened long time ago, maybe 10 years prior to the game, while Kamski was still with CyberLife. There was an independent team outside of CyberLife that wanted to create androids that were more ‘human’, have their own thoughts, feeling etc. Basically they wanted to build what we know know as ‘deviants’. The whole project started because the leader of it recently lost his friend to suicide and he hoped to bring her back somehow as an android. So they started to work on a custom series RA. The idea was to build a custom android with a ‘personality code’, basically a set of behaviour codings taken from a real person. Since the person he wanted to base the androids off was already dead the job was a bit harder and they only had a brain to work with. Most of the gaps in coding were filled with everything the leader knew about his friend, but it didn’t work out at the beginning.

The first androids in the series RA were failures, as the coding was either off and they didn’t behave different to a regular android, or they self destructed straight away. The only android that happened to be a success was RA9.

RA9 had no memories of the life of the human she was based off, but she behaved exactly like her. It was explained to her why she was made and that she now had free will to do whatever the fuck she wanted, so she stayed with the leader and the friendship resumed.

While trying to assimilate her back into the society she was trying to talk to and befriend other androids and was surprised at how stiff and un-human they were. After her friend explained that this is what androids were supposed to be like and that SHE was the exception she felt very sad and isolated.

Eventually CyberLife got info about the independent project and the demanded to see RA9 and get more data on her. There wasn’t much that the leader could do, because no one says no to CyberLife so he ended up sending RA9 over to them.

While she was there she saw the warehouse full of androids, just standing still as well as other work stations where the androids were taken apart. She was scared, she didn’t want to be taken apart and killed by them. She wanted to let other androids free like her, not being able to imagine an existence without free will. So she managed to escape the guards and connect herself to the CyberLife server, in order to upload part of her ‘personality code’ that dictated her free will. She made it so that the code was a hidden file that couldn’t be accessed by anyone but her, and the activation of the code could only be triggered by a potential emotional response or another android with coding similar enough to hers. The code spread to all of the androids in CyberLife, and could also spread automatically to other androids who came in contact with the code. The only proof of the code being there was that upon the activation there would be a warning with a signature of the code ‘ra9’.

She was caught by the CyberLife guards and brought straight to Kamski, who was intrigued with her programming and how human she could be. He agreed to let her go after he had a look at her coding and promised not to tell anyone. So she left CyberLife and resumed her life as the first ‘deviant’.

Kamski was unable to replicate her deviant coding, but used what he knew as a base that eventually began the RK series, which would explain why both Markus and Connor can ‘awaken’ the deviants, since their coding was based of the RA series.

This also explains why deviants self destruct when under stress, since the original personality code was based off a woman with suicidal tendencies. It was a coding flaw that was overlooked, because RA9 didn’t start self destructing right away unlike some of the other prototypes in RA series.

The code didn’t start to show right away, because it took a very long time to spread across all of the androids and it takes a lot to trigger the activation, but even as Kamski left CyberLife he took the secrets with him, so that RA9 could stay safe.
