A movie you think is underrated

I don't know if it's underrated necessarily but I watched Postcards from the Edge for the first time this year and I think a lot more people should talk about that movie!

A movie you like but wouldn't recommend

Probably this very odd 70s movie Old Boyfriends. It's weird and I'm happy I saw it but I can't really recommend it as a pleasurable viewing experience.

A horror movie you like

I'm a big baby about horror movies but I really liked Get Out (not an original answer by any means lol) so I'll say that!

A movie you wish you could un-watch

Bones and All NOT because it's a bad movie but because it was so terrifying and gory that I am still dealing with the ramifications of seeing those images. But good move though!

A performance you think is underrated

I think Tang Wei should've gotten more love last year for her performance in Decision to Leave.

An animated movie you like

The Little Mermaid for ever and ever and ever

I’m pretty young a feel as if I’m not diving deep enough into theatre. (Like I hardly know any shows other than the classics) Do you have any recommendations? Specifically ones with a good soundtrack as I am very into music and happen to be studying it.

hi! apologies if this has been in my inbox for a bit, i'm not checking in here as often as i used to. i think just listening to musicals and reading about them is a good way to learn a lot (i honestly used to just surf Wikipedia for hours). i don't listen to cast recordings too too much anymore, but here are some of my all-time favorites that i'd recommend as a good starting place (it's good to find out what kinds of sounds you're interested in anyway):

  • In The Heights (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Rent (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Sunday in the Park with George (Original Broadway Cast although I do also like the Jake Gyllenhaal/Annaleigh Ashford recording)
  • Into the Woods (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Merrily We Roll Along (Encores! cast recording - this is controversial I KNOW but I like this version a lot)
  • Next to Normal (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Avenue Q (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Fun Home (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Something Rotten! (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Legally Blonde (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Company (2008 revival cast)
  • Spring Awakening (Original Broadway Cast)
  • The Last Five Years (Original off-Broadway)
  • Pacific Overtures (2004 revival cast)
  • Waitress (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Dogfight (off-broadway cast)
  • Bright Star (original broadway cast)
  • Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 (both cast recordings are great tbh)
  • She Loves Me (2016 Broadway revival)
  • Sweeney Todd (original broadway cast)
  • The Band's Visit (original broadway cast)
  • Once (original broadway cast)
  • Girl from the North Country (i actually love the London OBC recording a lot)
  • Oklahoma! (2019 broadway revival - okay you should probably listen to a different recording first but i do love this recording)

this is like a pretty random array of shows and definitely ages me in terms of when i was coming up in learning about theater but these are recordings I genuinely enjoy listening to when i decide to listen to showtimes. Also I'd recommend the My Little Tonys podcast which is no longer producing new episodes but they do a really great job explaining theater history in a fun and accessible way.

but yeah from a music standpoint hopefully this helps!!

i don;t know where else to put this, but...following Paul Wontorek on instagram literally spoiled the context of the Sondheim/Lansbury cameo in Glass Onion for me and i’m so pissed lmao!
