Y/n gripped the counter at the nurses station, turning her knuckles white. She breathed through it trying not to bring attention to herself. After the contraction passed, she went back to tending patients like nothing happened.
Maggie, who was also standing at the nurses station, took notice. She knew her fellow ER nurse was ready to give birth any day now. Once y/n left the patient, Maggie walked over to her, pulling her into the break room. “You okay? Everyone will understand if you need to take a few extra breaks,”
“I’m fine, Maggie,” She replied, but the look Maggie gave y/n said that she didn’t believe her.
“Really? So I’m supposed to pretend I didn’t see you have a contraction moments ago?” Maggie crossed her arms. “Does Will know about this? How far apart are your contractions?”
“Will doesn’t know. The last thing I need is to be dotted on,” She shifted her weight from her left to her right, placing her hand on her back. “Contractions have on and off for the past hour or so,”
“When did they start?” Maggie noticed y/n was getting uncomfortable, so she directed her to the bench.
“At the start of my shift,”
Maggie’s eyes grew with shock. “You’ve been having contractions for almost three hours and didn’t tell anyone?!”
Before she could reply, April poked her head in and said she needed her help with a patient. Maggie watched the nurse waddle out of the room. If she wasn’t going to tell Will, then she would. Y/n was going to be mad at her telling Will, but she’d get over it.
Maggie walked out of the break room, scanning the ED for the familiar red headed doctor. She spotted him talking to a family over by the waiting room. As the family walked away, she tapped his shoulder. “Will, can I talk to you?
“Y/n’s been having contractions since the start of her shift,”
Will’s eyes grew wide. “WHAT! Are you serious?”
“Yeah. I just saw her grip the counter like she was on the edge of a cliff hanging on for dear life,”
“Where is she?” Will asked, clearly panicked.
“With April in trauma room three,”
Will took several large steps towards trauma room three. Once there, he pulled apart the curtains, “Doctor Halstead may I talk to you?”
“Of course,” She smiled, letting April take over. Y/n followed Will out to the hall, “Is there something wrong,”
“Yes, there is. Why didn’t you tell me you were having contractions?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I haven’t been having contractions,”
“So Maggie was lying then?”
Y/n huffed, rolling her eyes. Of course Maggie would tell Will. “I didn’t tell you anything because I knew you’d act like this-” Y/n heard a pop followed by a gush of water running down her leg. Looking down, she saw a puddle at her feet. “Will-”
“Oh, my god. Maggie! I need your help over here!” Will shouted. Maggie and April sprung into action. The two nurses helped y/n into a wheelchair, and rushed her over to the elevator. All of a sudden, y/n felt pressure and had an urge to push.
"I think we’re gonna have to deliver this baby in the elevator,” y/n stated. She could hear Will curse and mutter under his breath.
“April, press the emergency button. Will, you’re gonna need to help her on the floor,” Maggie barked out orders. “Y/n, I’m gonna need to take off your pants and underwear. Is that okay?”
After Maggie got the okay from y/n, Maggie quickly peeled off her pants and underwear. “On the count of three, I want you to push downwards and hold it for ten seconds,”
When the contraction came, y/n did what she was told. “That was a good push y/n. I need a few more just like it,” Another contraction came, and you did the same thing. She let out a breath, and leaned her head towards Will.
“I didn’t think I’d be having a baby in an elevator on Christmas,” She chuckled.
“Neither did I, but here we are,” Will kissed the top of her head.
“I see the head, y/n and all I need is a small push,” Maggie said. She pushed down lightly, and felt a release of pressure. Soon, a heard a loud cry filled the elevator. “It’s a girl,”
Maggie placed the baby in your arms. “Just look at her, Will. She’s perfect,”
“And she’s got a full head of red hair!” April smiled down at the newborn baby. “Congratulations guys.”
For a few moments, everything was quiet. But then Maggie asked, “So what’s this cute little girl’s name?”
Y/n once again looked up at Will. “Well, we had a few names picked out, but we weren’t completely sold on anything yet. But taking a look at her, she looks like a Grace,”
i’m such a sucker for babies.
