Naziyah Mahmood is a woman of contradictions. She was a scientist for the European Space Agency, an artist and soon to be published writer/poet. Also, she is a deadly martial artist and weapons collector while being a peace loving woman of faith. Naziyah has overcome a tough upbringing and disability to become an academic of excellence……who can also kick your butt. (x)

“I do get a lot of odd looks when walking around Glasgow, especially when I’m training. There is still that stereotype here that women dressed like me should just be in the kitchen. An old instructor of mine used to call me his ‘little ninja girl.’ I didn’t mind because it gave me an advantage. I was taken lightly and I routinely got underestimated, especially when sparring. I remember one male student who was well over 6ft reassured me by saying,
‘Don’t worry. I will go easy on you.’
He soon found himself on the floor.”

What can I say about the whole experience? Push through. It’s not going to be easy. It’s never meant to be easy and a lot of times, the right way is never the easy way. And without a dream, there is no direction, there’s no aim, there’s no fixed point to sail to. You kinda get lost and you just kinda wander about. And there may be a point where that dream takes a backseat for a little while – you know, don’t throw it out completely. Don’t throw it out, keep it. Always keep it. I guarantee you, you’ll ask yourself is this all worth it. I’ve asked myself that more than I care to even mention; and if the answer is yes, you have to keep going. The world will feel like it’s out to get you and that’s because the world isn’t a nice place but that doesn’t mean we can’t be nice. And with a bit of charm, maybe we can make it a little bit nicer.
In your fights of life, you face the possibility of getting knocked down. I guarantee you, you will get hit time after time and you’re not gonna see it coming. But every good fight needs a few hits and we always find this power to endure. If I can give you a bit of advice that I’m giving myself this year; and it’s to go for it. Go for it. It’s a simple answer to countless questions that you can ask yourself. And this doesn’t apply to self destructive questions, it applies to self discovery questions. And anytime that I have answered a question with that answer, it hasn’t went according to plan. In fact, I don’t think it ever has went according to plan; however, you find out so much about yourself. And it’s scary to take that next step – it still terrifies me. But once it becomes known, you find that rush. Whether it’s trying out for a school play or trying some new exotic food or a first kiss!
Many years from now, I want to be able to say through the hard times and through the good times, I had a wondrous time.
