The Pride, launches a new Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the printing of a massive, oversized hardcover collection of the LGBTQ+ superhero action adventure series, The Pride.

The Pride stars FabMan as he decides enough is enough with the poor representation, treatment and media coverage of LGBTQ+ superheroes and decides to bring together his own team of queer powerhouses. Including Wolf, Muscle Mary, Twink, Bear, Frost, Angel, White Trash and Cub, The Pride fights for justice and diversity…but is the world ready for them? And when the villainous Reverend and his terrifying lackey Basher set their sights on world domination, The Pride may be all that stands between us and total chaos.

The hardcover collection will collect all six issues of The Pride volume 1, plus all three issues of anthology sister series, The Pride Adventures, along with tons of exclusive content and bonus materials. Clocking in at over 260+ pages, the Kickstarter aims to not only print the books but bring a large print run so The Pride can reach as wise an audience as possible.

Featuring artwork from a true community of incredible talent including @kristaferanka, @csmithart, Gavin Mitchell, Jacopo Camagni, Dani Abrams, Dan Harris, Jamal Campbell and many, many, many more!

The Kickstarter is now live! Rewards include the book in print and digital, via DRM-free PDF or Comixology, as well as prints, posters, badges and exclusive sketches and commissions by superstar artists Kris Anka and @kevinwada

The Pride has been a work from my heart for a long time, and the support of the fans and community has been out of this world. I hope we can make something really special with this Kickstarter and bring the book to even more people all over the world.

The Pride #1 was one of the Top 25 Comixology Submit Titles of 2014.

“I highly recommend this smart, charming, wonderful book to anyone who likes good comics. It’s absolutely a pleasure to read and a clear labor of love.” - Gail SimoneBatgirl, Leaving Megalopolis, Clean Room

THE PRIDE. Old-School and Progressive at the same time. Classic, high-energy superhero action that gives the queer community the heroes they’ve always deserved.” - Steve Orlando (MidnighterVirgil)

"Brilliantly progressive and strikingly relatable - The Pride delivers.“ - Mike Garley (The Kill Screen, Samurai Slasher)

You can help support The Pride volume 1 Hardcover Collected Edition on Kickstarter here!

The allure of Rodolphe and Léo’s Kenya series is essentially twofold. Readers witness a smorgasbord of various genre elements—globe-trotting adventure, alien invasion tale, spy thriller (with added dinosaurs for taste)—mashed together to somehow produce a cogent, compelling tale. And they see Léo d

Another fantastic and fabulous review for The Pride #5, our latest issue, along with some lovely thoughts on the series thus far. Really pleased with this one, a really thoughtful and positive review. Hope I can keep it up :)

Hey hey hey! Stop right there! I´ve been veeeery busy (and absent, too, I know) but with a  good reason. I´m preparing a Con (I will share a table with the amazing Maxime Garbarini) and we have a looot of things coming. While we all wait, consider giving The Pride a chance. It is an amazing comic book, made out of pure nerd love by a team of great people commanded by Joe Glass. It has received amazing reviews (Gail Simone approved, guys, seriously!)  The 5th issue is just fresh out of the oven, so close to the end of the first arc that you can almost taste it.

Signal boost! Anyone else wanting to reblog and boost this, it’d be much appreciated!

It can be really frustrating working on the comics sometimes.

There’s a large, vocal audience declaring how much they want to see more diversity in comics and more LGBTQ characters. I was one of them, even. And it’s why I made The Pride.

However, when an indie project comes out with just that, a lot of this audience don’t actually buy the product they’d been calling out for: because it’s not from Marvel or DC.

Fact is though, if an audience doesn’t prove a desire and market for such a product, they won’t be willing to take a risk on creating one of their own.

Obviously, I’m small press. I self-publish. I pay to get the comics made out of my own pocket. At the moment, there’s still around £5000 to pay artists for work and get the rest of the series printed when it comes to it. This isn’t even taking into account the cost of postage etc…it’s hard work, and takes up a lot of my time and money.

But it’s a labor of love, so I keep working at it. I wouldn’t change that for the world. But I do wish that I was able to pay the artists faster and could afford printing easier.

The Pride has 841 Likes on Facebook. If all of them bought just one copy of The Pride digital issues (at just £1.50), any issue, that would raise a massive chunk needed towards paying off the remaining artists! It would literally fund itself. I wouldn’t make any money myself, but I don’t care about that. This project is as much about building my profile and name as a writer than it is about getting rich…I will never get rich off The Pride, but I love doing it.

Likes are all well and good, honestly they are great and a massive help in their own right, but it doesn’t help me actually make the comics. And it’s frustrating to see this market, this audience, saying they want a product and then just…not.

Just felt like sharing that is all. In case anyone is considering making comics of their own. Obviously, I don’t want to scare anyone off: you wanna make comics, make comics. But be prepared for hard times and struggles, but if you work hard it could well all be worth it in the end.

And of course, if you do want to buy The Pride, you can do so here.

Must invest

You like it, you buy it. It’s very simple guys, it’s time to get more proactive in the community’s you want to be represented more. I was lucky enough to buy an issue of the Pride at SDCC. That is actually how I first discovered the art of Kris Anka.

Umm...at SDCC? I've never been, and I've never sent any there. Curious. Looking into that. But I do agree with those points. Liking and spreading the word obviously is a MASSIVE help to us, but the only way bigger companies take notice of new markets and voices is to show that there is a market/voice there.

Like it and if you can, then please try it out too and buy. If you can't afford to at this time (even as low as £1.50), then reblogging, sharing, and adding your opinions as to why you think this is important is a great way to help us out too :)

Thanks all!

The Pride #1 was one of the first comic scripts I ever wrote. It took me a long time to be ready to show it to the world, as it felt so personal to me. And also, needed to find artists. Thankfully, regular collaborator, Gavin Mitchell, came on board to help me start this world.

We also had Kris Anka, Marvel artist extraordinaire, to make a cover for us, and artists JD Faith and Marc Ellerby to create some of the extra pages, which explore the origins of White Trash and Wolf.

All these guys have been super-supportive of my little dream of getting more LGBTQ characters in comics, and having an open gay team of superheroes.

The Pride #1 follows the amazing FabMan (Tomorrow’s Fabulous Man, Today!) who is sick of being seen as a joke (camp guys are heroes too!) and decides to form a team of the best, greatest LGBTQ superheroes around! And so The Pride is born! Muscle Mary, Wolf, Twink, White Trash, Angel, Frost and Bear face a world ready to judge them before they know them, but they will surprise the whole world! That is, if they survive the mysterious, shadowy plot building in the background.

You can buy copies of The Pride #1 here, in both digital and print formats.

I supported this title when it was on kickstarter and two issues in I haven’t been given cause to regret it the decision.  It’s a great comic and totally worth picking up!!

Aww, thanks for the comments! I am so glad you're enjoying the book!

THE BEAR

Real Name: Harvey Castro

Powers: Bear has a feral ursine appearance, affording him an intimidating stature, animal senses, claws and beast-like strength

Harvey Castro just wants to do the right thing.

His powers came to him relatively later in his life, and early on in his life, he made his mistakes. But he doesn’t define himself by them, and rather learned from them and looks to help others in the same situation.

And in another case of breaking definition, one shouldn’t judge this book by it’s cover. Bear is not as scary as he may first appear, and is dedicated to his community and friends, especially his good friend and partner in heroics, Angel.

But get on his bad side, and you will hear this Bear roar!

Making the character

I wanted to create our bear character as the voice of maturity on the team, but also someone who represents those that came out later in life.

Also, thought it was fun to play with the notion of him being the nicest, friendliest guy ever, despite his frightening appearance.

He's perhaps one of the most normal guys in the team, very down to earth and normal. Also, he's based on my older gay friends, who are the nicest men I've ever met (as well as all being bears actually).

But he's especially fun to write when he gets angry :P

MUSCLE MARY

Real Name: Queen Sapphire of Labrysia

Powers: From a race of incredible warrior women, Sapphire is an amazing fighter, endowed with incredible strength, stamina, and even flight. She is armed with a holy relic ax of her people.

Queen Sapphire of Labrysia is a stranger in a strange world. With near god-like strength, speed and longevity, she wields her mighty double-headed axe against all those who would cause harm or hatred.

Taking the name that the gay community of San Francisco gave to her when she arrived on the shore’s of the world of men, Sapphire looks for the good in all people and all things, but is prepared to fight to protect those that need it.

And with incredible powers like hers, you would not want to anger this queen.

Making the character

Muscle Mary was again me using a gay slang term to form a superhero, and around a superhero archetype. MM is our Wonder Woman, but she is much more compassionate than some recent portrayals of that character.

She's a blast to write, as she occasionally has a 'fish out of water' vibe to her as well as being this almost hippy, earth mother element. She's brave and fearless, and has tons of respect. I just loved making this character.

It's really nice to write someone who is in control of their emotions, but is still very emotional. She's humble, compassionate and fierce as hell when needed. Perhaps the most archetypal of the characters, but still a chance to explore some intense emotional stuff too.

And the name: when she arrived in the 'world of man' she landed in San Francisco in the middle of a gay pride parade, and it's one of the first things someone called her :P

TWINK

Real Name: Owen Mercury

Powers: Capable of turning into an organic, platinum metal-skinned form that enhances his durability and strength vastly.

The young newbie of the group, Owen Mercury is fresh-faced and in awe of what is surrounding him, from the city to his fellow heroes.

Taking the codename Twink, this metal skinned boy-next-door has been a major fan of the many superheroes of the world for years and has been inspired by them to become a hero himself. When he learns that FabMan is putting together a team of heroes just like him, he jumps at the chance.

The Californian-born Twink has found himself in the big city of New York, with big people and big things all around him, and whilst he may spend a lot of time geeking out, this boy has got what it takes to prove himself.

Making Twink

Twink was an early character in my mind, the only characters to come before him were FabMan and Wolf. Twink is kind of our lead-in character, as he knows as little about the truth of the world and other characters as we do.

That being said, I always wanted him to be one of the secretly strongest links in the team. He has a huge heart, and is pretty hard to anger and he's the type to not hate anyone at all really.

He does have his foibles though, and he has a habit of putting his foot in it. It was also nice to write a character who's gay and unashamedly geeky (like myself) as well as a skinny looking guy who's actually about as tough as they come.

There's going to be a lot of big things for Twink, so keep your eyes peeled on this guy.

Oh, and as for the name...I just always felt like terms for gay stereotypes and groups sounded so much like superhero codenames already. Twink was one of the first ones down in that respect.
