56 french-language film recs!

I wanted to find some movies I can watch to improve my French, so I looked for films available on Kanopy (which is rly cool--if you live in the US, you can stream some movies for free if your library or school subscribes to it!) All of the following films are on Kanopy, and I imagine you can also find many of them on p*racy sites (totally not endorsing that at all no sir!). I’ve listed each film’s title along with its year and score on IMDB. I only included movies with at least 1,000 IMDB ratings and an average of at least 7/10 so they’re all reasonably acclaimed! I also included a short summary of each from IMDB as well. List below the cut because it’s long!

Beyond the Basic in French Adjectives! (AKA synonym list!)

@rivkahstudies​ made an amazing post with some advanced adjectives in Brazilian Portuguese, and with Rivkah's permission, I made a similar one for French in case anyone finds it helpful! I know I can relate to the struggle of always saying things like "the movie was good" or "the homework was difficult" instead of something more distinctive. 

In most cases, I've only listed the masculine form of the adjective, which is the base to which you can create other adjectives from. If you need a refresher on how to create these forms, I recommend the University of Texas's Tex's French Grammar website (you can just search "tex french grammar adjectives" and you get lots of good info!) I can also make a post reviewing this information if people would find it helpful—feel free to comment or message me if that's something you're interested in!

This definitely isn’t comprehensive, as I wasn’t able to find translations for every gender and sexual orientation, but hopefully it’s helpful to some people!

French is a very gendered language, and there's no obvious equivalent to the English "they." Instead, people use neopronouns such as iel, ielle, and/or ille. Sometimes, people use "on" as a personal pronoun. Unfortunately, the official Académie Française rejects all of these gender-neutral pronouns, and I get the sense that they aren't very accepted in French society yet. Famous French LGBT people (in order of their pictures above.) Note that the Rimbaud section contains mentions of abuse.

  • Yves Saint-Laurent (1936-2008), one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century. He married a man, his longtime business partner, a few days before his death.
  • Claude Cahun (1894-1954), photographer who often addressed issues of gender roles. Cahun had relationships with women and stated that "neuter is the only gender that always suits me."
  • Coccinelle (1931-2006), actress, entertainer, and trans rights activist as well as one of the first people to receive gender confirmation surgery that was widely publicized in Europe
  • Adèle Haenel (born 1989), actress perhaps best known for Portait of a Lady on Fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu.) Haenel, who came out as a lesbian in 2014, is also an outspoken advocate against sexual assault and abuse.
  • Céline Sciamma (born 1978), lesbian screenwriter and film director. Her films, such as Portait of a Lady on Fire and Tomboy, often feature LGBTQ characters and issues.
  • Christine and the Queens (born 1988), acclaimed singer and songwriter. She's pansexual and genderqueer (and uses she/her pronouns).
  • Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891), extremely influential poet who wrote most of his work as a teenager, completely ceasing writing at 20. Rimbaud is often associated with fellow writer Paul Verlaine, who he had a romantic relationship with; Verlaine, who was significantly older, shot him in the wrist, but the wound was relatively minor. Rimbaud was likely gay, I don't think he had any relationships with women.
  • Jean Cocteau (1889-1963), very influential poet, writer, and filmmaker. From what I read, his sexual orientation (gay vs bi, etc.) isn't entirely clear but he had many relationships with men.
  • Michel Foucault (1926-1984), very influential philosopher perhaps best known for his books Discipline and Punish, a history of the prison, and the four-part History of Sexuality. A gay man, he was one of the first public figures to die from AIDS-related complications in France.

I find one of the most difficult aspects of learning French as a foreign language is understanding spoken words in real time. Here are some resources to fix that! 

(I have chosen resources that are available on YouTube and therefore free to everyone.) For the best learning experience, try not to watch with any subtitles ! If you are truly trying to better your listening, then just listen !

News Sources 

I find News to be perfect for listening, because they annunciate clearly and do not use slang words without explaining them. Plus you can be well informed on the events that matter to you IN FRENCH !

like the news sources, you can find things that interest you! Sometimes they speak a little quicker, but it’s good to get used to the way that natives speak!

"Since 2004, students in France are banned from wearing the hijab to school. Mothers who are hijabi can’t come on field trips as chaperones with their children. French students are only allowed to wear it in university.

In 2011, France became the first country in Europe to ban the niqab. Those who wore it in public ran the risk of being fined. President Nicolas Sarkozy said that veils oppress women, and that they were not welcome in France. Emmanuel Macron, France’s progressive darling and current president, was quoted saying that he would like to make an “Islam of France,” a proposition both insulting and full of insinuations that Islam is something that needs to be fixed.

If seen wearing a niqab, the penalty is 150 euro or in the U.S., 217 dollars. As of 2015, 1546 fines were doled out.

In 2016, France started deliberating banning “burkinis,” hijabi-friendly swimwear, in its beaches and seaside resorts. The law was later overruled by France’s top administrative court.

Last year, French brand Decathlon wanted to start selling a sports hijab in their stores. They already had them on store floors in Morocco, but planned to bring them to France. Politicians and the French part of social media were quick to express their discontent, some even speaking of boycotting the store. Decathlon decided not to sell the sport hijabs in their stores.

Simply put, France does not like the hijab.

We all know this. Before we think of France’s culture, its monuments, its soccer team, we think of the government’s oppression of Muslims and other minorities."

For today’s prompt for the 30 day langblr challenge, I wrote about my dream house! I don’t really have a dream house design yet so I talked more about the kind of area I want to live in :) In other French-related news, I’ve been reading A New World Begins, a history of the French Revolution, by Jeremy Popkin and it’s a real page-turner!

Je voudrais habiter dans une maison avec une bibliothèque! J'adore lire et j'ai beaucoup de livres. Je voudrais habiter à une ville près des musées et les salles de concert. Idéalement, j'habitais près d'une université aussi parce que je pourrais aller aux événements éducatifs. De plus, je voudrais avoir un grand jardin pour mes chiens.

(I would like to live in a house with a library! I love to read and I have a lot of books. I would like to live in a city near museums and concert halls. Ideally, I would live near a university as well because I could go to educational events. Furthermore, I would like to have a big yard for my dogs.)

Les pancakes à la banane

Today for the 30 day langblr challenge, I wrote about my favorite food, banana pancakes, and translated a recipe! From my perspective, the pancakes look a little thin, which makes sense to me since crepes are more common in France.

Ma nourriture préférée est les pancakes à la banane. Ma mère les cuisine souvent pour moi quand je accomplis quelque chose. J’aime la nourriture sucré donc j’adore les pancakes! J'ai trouvé cette recette en ligne. 

Les ingrédients:

  • 250 g de farine (flour)
  • 50 cl de lait (milk)
  • 1 banane très mûre (very ripe banana)
  • 3 ouefs (eggs)
  • 1 cuillère à soupe de levure (tablespoon of yeast)
  • 1 pincée de sucre (1 pinch of sugar)
  • 30 g de beurre fondu (melted butter)
  1. Dans un blender, mélanger rapidement les oeufs, la banane, la farine, 2 pincées de sel, la levure, le lait et le beurre fondu.
  2. Laisser reposer 30 min.
  3. Faites chauffer une poêle à crêpes. Verser des petites louches de pâte, dès que les bulles apparaissent, retourner le pancake et laisser le cuire quelques secondes.
  4. Servir tiède, accompagné de sirop d'érable ou de beurre.

In English, that translates roughly to:

  1. In a blender, quickly mix eggs, the banana, the flour, 2 pinches of salt, the yeast, the milk and the melted butter.
  2. Let rest for 30 min.
  3. Heat a crepe pan (assuming this is like an American frying pan?). Pour some small ladles of batter, as soon as bubbles appear, turn over the pancake and leave it to cook for some seconds.
  4. Serve warm, accompanied with some maple syrup or some butter.

Ma saison préférée est l'automne. J'aime étudier et en automne, j'ai envie parce que mes cours commencent. Cet automne, j'étudie la littérature, l'histoire et la sociologie. De plus, j'adore l'automne parce que Halloween est en automne. Pour Halloween, j'aime regarder les films d'horreur. J'aime aussi l’automne parce que en automne je fais cuire beaucoup. J'aime particulièrement faire cure le pain rapide à la citrouille. Je mange le pain rapide et boire le jus de pomme chaud souvent en automne.

I began reading Le Petit Prince in French today! I originally read it in English in middle school and loved it, so I’m excited to revisit it. I just read the first chapter and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I understood! Even the words I hadn’t seen before were possible for me to figure out based on context or English cognates. Here’s a list of the vocab I found:

  • le chapitre: chapter 
  • lorsque: when, as soon as, while 
  • vierge: virgin, blank 
  • vécu: true, lived (with “experience") 
  • le serpent: snake 
  • le fauve: big cat, wild animal, wild beast 
  • la copie: copy, duplicate, replica 
  • le dessin: drawing, picture 
  • la proie: prey 
  • mâcher: to chew 
  • ensuite: then, after, afterwards 
  • bouger: to move 
  • tracer: to trace 
  • chef d’œuvre: masterpiece
  • l’interieur: inside, interior 
  • afin que: so, so that, in order that 
  • conseiller: to advise, to inform, to recommend 
  • plutôt: rather, rather than, instead 
  • le calcul: calculation, arithmetic
