Today is my birthday.

I have been on HRT for two years now. The closet was dark, but I lied to myself and called the darkness protective – because that is how my parents taught me, inadvertently or not. Is it any wonder I relate so strongly to Elsa? Like Elsa, it took me too long to break free of that tutelage, but I did.

My friends in the Frozen fandom a decade ago were the first ones to help me take steps to discovering myself. It was talking to other trans girls online who were Frozen fans that cracked my egg – and I’ve always emotionally connected to both Elsa and Anna because of the way they were raised, because they were forced to be strong too young because of circumstance and the folly of adults that came before them.

Thank you to my trans sisters. Thank you to my friends.

Today is my birthday, and I’m watching Frozen Fever again. It’s appropriate because of the birthday theme. It’s also appropriate because I have a sore throat today, though in my case not because of a cold.

Most of all, however, it is appropriate because it is about healing. Two people healing from years of isolation. Healing from their parents’ mistakes.

That resonates as I heal from my years in the closet.

There’s something beautiful in Elsa giving Anna a gift for every year they were separated.

Something beautiful in the families we build, in the portrait with Kristoff and Sven and Olaf and the sisters all together.

Today is my birthday.

I hope that I am leaving a positive mark in this world.
