i have such a huge problem with self help books because they all seem to insist that there's some kind of ultimate life secret/superpower that you can absorb almost passively just by reading one random former financial advisor's advice

and there's definitely merit to some of the advice in self help books, but not to the extent that reading one type of book will give you all the answers to wealth and success. The grift of self help is rooted in this promise of new, life-changing information—commodified and packaged into a digestible form—when in reality that information has been readily available in great works of fiction for centuries already. Learning to analyze and understand literature is what's really important in connecting us with past and present understandings of the human experience, and that's why it's sad to see people spending so much time reading oversimplified cash grab philosophy instead of learning to tease more nuanced and complex ideas out of (more fun and compelling imo) fiction and nonfiction books
