no love at all for t*mothy sn*der but there are a bunch of library types posting that "do not obey in advance" screencap & i think it is good advice & addresses the extremely common phenomenon of "quiet censorship" or automatic capitulation that a bunch of libraries participate in. it's just also funny to me to act like this will be a new problem? the library that i work for now is run by people who are proud of their professional uprightness & has a board-approved policy against censorship but also treats all people under 18 as the property of their parents & age-restricts AV materials. oh?
#children's privacy inconveniences their parents so they just won't have it. etc.#began feeling very foolish about a year ago for believing that a majority of library workers or even a powerful minority#sincerely operate on the belief & understanding that children's information needs are important & distinct from their parents#why did i think that? well i had colleagues & friends who shared my values i guess. but mostly naïveté#vocational awe diaries :')#yes yes institutions make concessions for all kinds of reasons but one of them is cowardice#despite our loudly impressed with our morals posture as a field librarians don't agree very well on the core features/services of libraries
