For the dragon rider au, what does dragon riding gear/armor usually look like? Is it lighter to allow for more aerodynamics, or heavier for more protection? Something in the middle?

Also. How big are Red and Robin?

It depends on the dragon!

Robin for example has to wear a light saddle as he’s only just big enough to carry a rider. Even more weight would severely hinder him during flight! So Tim wears well insulated clothes for the cold air further up, the safety harness, and little else in terms of armor.

The larger dragons don’t have this kind of limitation, so most of the gear/saddle design is up to their rider with the universal focus being safety and comfort.

Bruce has a rather clunky saddle on Bat with several small bags and pouches built in for various items. Bruce himself wears a rather heavy set armor (think Batsuit) that’s still comparatively light to allow for an easier time to mount and dismount his dragon.

Dick’s saddle is rather sleek with fewer pouches, allowing him to blend almost completely into Nightwing’s feathers when he wants to (great for warmth and added insulation). His gear is focused on flexibility, and he mostly opts for leather armor with a thin layer of inlaid chain mail. Not enough to keep arrows from piercing it but hypothetically enough to prevent it being a fatal injury. (He also tends to “forget” about strapping himself into the safety lines, claiming it hinders his maneuverability. This is a bold faced lie.)

The one thing all saddles and individual rider gear has in common are the safety lines that are hooked into fixed points on the saddle and can be attached and loosened to a specific harness the riders have to wear (mostly in the form of a thick and supportive band around the waist). They keep the riders safe from falling during risky air maneuvers.

As for a size comparison here’s a rough comparison chart! You can find more in the Digital Art tag on this blog 💚

Hi! I don't know if you remember me, but I'm the person who sent an ask a couple weeks ago about thinking of making a fic based on your Dragonrider AU. I wanted to let you know that I have written the beginnings of my fic. I hope you like it so far, no pressure to read it though.

(Link) [hopefully the link works]

Also the dragon artwork, especially showing the differences between each dragon is awesome! It helps to show just how big Red is compared to the others and considering the size of the riders themselves.

I hope you have a good rest of your day!

Hi! Thanks for sharing the link! Definitely go give this a try people ✨

How do Dragons treat their young?

Avatar

Dragon eggs are rarely left with the dragons themselves. It’s so rare that they hatch in the first place that they’re taken to safety soon after they’re discovered for fear of squashing/freezing/stealing.

Dragons usually aren’t very paternal creatures by nature, the only beings they truly form bonds with are their riders. But once the young dragons hatch and are taken back to live in the caves, it’s not unusual for the clutch parent to assume the role of “guardian”. Ie making sure they’re not eaten by other dragons.

Occasionally there while there will also be dragons like Bat, who are very tolerant of other dragons, especially young ones. And will allow them to nest with him. But that’s highly unusual.

is bat a female dragon?? Was her clutch stolen? What happened to the other eggs in the clutch????

Tbh I’m still torn about whether or not to make the dragons in this au reproduce asexually like some reptilians are known to do or not, so I can’t give a definitive answer on that just yet 👁️ or maybe I’ll just leave that whole thing ambiguous/up to reader’s interpretation altogether >.<

Bat has male pronouns tho! And he’s a parent! Everything else is still a work in progress ksksksks 🤭

There were three eggs in the clutch! Two were stolen by Joker, but only Red ended up hatching. The third hatched in Gotham and died very young during a siege on Metropolis, when Gotham sent reinforcements to aide their allies.

ok but jason didn’t mean to ‘kill’ dick and it was red that struck the poisonous blow without him having input in the decision. red might not have known the severity of what she was doing but she will feel how jason reacts and his anguish and guilt will mix up with her guilt at causing him to hurt like this and it will be a Situation. add in dick who isn’t actually dead turning up and there is no logic or coherence in the face of those emotions.

Hm, fair enough 🤔

I mean all things considered there’s a great many ways this could turn out.

Jason remaining oblivious, Jason figuring it out in a heartbeat, willful ignorance, traitorous hope…. Unlimited possibilities in the face of fanfiction hehehe 🤭

I'm pitching my Dragon AU in Westeros... Aka HotD or A Song of Ice and Fire universe.

In that universe, it is possible to bring back the dead with a certain kind of fire magic, if you've got a powerful enough witch/priest of the god of fire. Also helps if you are willing to offer a human sacrifice in exchange.

But the dead who come back like that are...messed up. Just how messed up will depend on how long it has been since the death.

If you do it ASAP, the person is more or less normal, but with some memory gaps and obsessions. You wait a day or so, what you get back is a wrath filled zombie who's composed of the worst parts of the dead person's character.

And if you have been brought back more than once, the more messed up you get each time.

Thinking how it matches the Lazarus Pits...

That’s an interesting concept! And if you go with Jason being brought back after spending six months dead… that could definitely lead to some complications 👁️

But if you go with Jason being a dragon rider already maybe the bond with his dragon could eventually snap him out of it? 🤔

Me, frantically trying to sort through all my world building notes: alrighty what we got here, we’ve uh— nope, wrong one. Nope, not the mermaid one either… ah, the demon au, almost forgot about that one… Crossover…fae…CoO… but where is the- AHA!

*Checks notes*: Okay folks, we’ve got more unnecessary world building! Today’s menu is— uhhh…. The Dragon Au one! Gotham city is currently home to… just a second… ah! Yes, here it is. The capital of Bruce’s kingdom, Gotham City, is currently home to no less than 7 dragons! With the addition of three dragon eggs, carefully kept in the caves at a nice, crisp temperature. Four of these dragons have riders. The rest are unclaimed as of yet. Annnnd….

*tries and fails to make sense of the weird scribbles*: okay, yeah that’s all for today. Oops

Okay I’m just gonna use this post and reblog it with more Dragon Au fun facts because I have no idea how far this story is going to progress as a fanfic because—- so many ongoing projects. So yeah-

  • Queen of Peace by Florence and the Machine is on loop in my head while writing
  • Jason tried stealing a loose scale off Bat while the dragon was asleep. Bat caught him, and Bruce returned to the sight of his dragon curiously sniffing and booping a terrified street kid
  • Jason picked out the smallest of the dragon eggs to call his own, declaring it would grow the biggest of them all!
  • Dick was the one to find Jason’s “body” when he supposedly died in the fire
  • Dick can’t stomach the smell of burnt meat

I know in your AU Bat is probably really old, given how big he is…

But in the scenario where each Rider has dragons that hatched from eggs they were given (let’s ignore the slow growth rate and assume different breeds have different sizes or something for now…)…

Imagine Prince Bruce having a dragon egg placed in his cradle as is the custom, but it doesn’t hatch (only a few does, dragons are pretty rare)… Till the assassination of the king and queen, which the eight year old prince witnessed.

The egg hatches that night, as the prince, still in shock, stays in his room curled up clutching it.

The shell of an egg is supposed to be similar to the colour of the dragon hatching from it, but from the vibrant red-gold egg, the hatched dragonette is an eerie shade of dark purple and black, with eyes so white that they first assume the baby dragon is blind.

It is assumed the little prince’s grief and rage shaded the dragonette, seeping into it through the bond between dragon and rider.

Then, many years later, another grieving eight year old is handed a dragon egg, this one dark in shade, ebony and purple.

The dragonette that emerges, though, is as vibrant in shade as a bird of paradise.

There is black, sure, but more of a sparkling bright blue, and the soft, soft feathers that can still guard themselves from fire as well as any scales or leather.

Eyes as deep and bright a blue as its little rider’s (and his parents’).

Bruce taking it as an omen that Dick will recover far better than he from their shared trauma, an omen that the little acrobat will be able to find his way out of his version of that dark alley.

That’s both a very beautiful but also horrifying way to depict the character’s mental state at the time of the hatching. Especially if we go with acute emotional distress being a common trigger for premature dragon hatching 🥺

Also, the way people would most likely use it as a way to divine whether that dragon rider will end up being good or evil (in a broad sense of the word) 👀 Dragon astronomy basically ksksksks

Dunno if this is the route you're gonna go in the dragon au, but those posts about Jay thinking he killed Dick and Nightwing...

Now in the AU we have Tim and Robin in Jay's custody healing from the wounds.

Dick is furious and out for blood. Bruce, the king, has to be more responsible and wants to avoid a full dragon war.

Sounds definitely like a recipe for Dick and Nightwing to take off on their own and confront the killer... Dick only then realizing that the other rider is Jason.

Cue the fight, the assumed 'death'.

Jason goes back to his homegrounds, horrified. Tim, now mostly comfortable with Jason, asking what's wrong.

Only to be told by a dazed Jason that he killed Dick...

Oh wow yeah that would be horrifying 😰

Tim would probably be torn between comforting Jason and being absolutely vengeful. How do you even react to such a statement?

He’d also be in denial. No way could someone manage to kill Dick or Nightwing! But- but Red is gigantic. All it would take for her to land a lucky hit would be a second of inattention and it’s over…

Poor Tim trying to get Jason to tell him what happened, start to finish, but Jason only being stuck on the “I killed my big brother” part…

That post about Jason thinking he killed Dick...

Exact reversal of how your fic is going.

Instead of the Batfam assuming Tim and Baby Dragon dead while Jason is grudgingly nursing them back to health...

We have Jason convinced he killed his big brother and the fluffy dragon that used to cuddle him in its wings whenever Dick took him near enough.

All the horror and the angst...

Meanwhile, the scene before that...

Tim and Baby Dragon, bedraggled and exhausted from flying way too fast through the storm, practically falling into the palace courtyard and screaming for Bruce and Bat (yeah, the Baby Dragon is screaming too, with pterodactyl screeches to echo his rider).

Bruce, for whom, as far as he knew, his sons were out on a short flight - intended to train Baby Dragon how to fly in bad weather - rushing out to find his youngest son screaming about dead boys back from the grave and a monster with poison breath taking his brother...

Oh that would be horrifying! Poor Bruce wouldn’t know what to think •.•

Scene inspired by the House of Dragons scene which started this whole plotline… Though it is gonna work best with a somewhere-mentioned version of Red that has poison breath.

What I loved most in that scene was the ending look at the expression of the surviving rider – realizing what just happened, realizing he has ended all chance of reconciliation without even really intending to, that the world he was used to has effectively ended…

I kind of want that look on Jason’s face 😊

A Jason-Red and Dick-Nightwing combat scenario…

Like that scene. Maybe Jason-Red is chasing Tim-Robin and there’s no way they can outfly him.

Dick and Nightwing try to intercept. At first Dick is trying to talk Jason down, appealing to his brother, but that obviously doesn’t work.

So, desperate to save Tim and Robin, Nightwing breathes fire on Red. It’s too weak to get through her scales, of course, but that is the kind of attack Red will NOT ignore. This has to be avenged in blood. Even if her rider thinks otherwise.

Tim-Robin is forgotten and Red pursues Dick-Nightwing. The smaller dragon flies in the opposite direction, trying to get Red away from the Baby dragon.

Red finally catches up. Jason doesn’t REALLY want Dick dead, he might have thought about it, but now that the moment has come no, no way, he can’t, but Red is beyond listening.

He manages to (barely) redirect Red from chomping Nightwing, but then Red breathes her poison fumes onto the feathery dragon and his rider… Both fall from the skies while Jason watches helplessly…

Jason knows how deadly Red’s poison is, he has seen it take effect, he knows it has no cure. He has killed Dick and Nightwing. And he knows how nasty that death will be – they will be lucky if they die in the fall.

Btw, the crown prince’s companions include a certain mysterious rumoured-woods-witch and healer called Raven… But Jason doesn’t know about that…

Oh sheesh… Jason thinking he killed Dick and Nightwing would be the nail in the coffin for the assumption that he can never go home again. Not to mention the guilt.

Dick is beloved by the kingdom, especially the common folk. Bruce’s golden boy. Jason’s big brother.

He wanted Tim’s head. Not Dick’s.

But now that he screwed everything up beyond repair… well, all that’s left to do is commit to the act and see it through to the bitter end… right? 😰😔
