Don't be suspicious: Group Stealth Checks in Critical Role - Comparisons!

Finally, we have reached the conclusion of this project. At least, this edition of the project, I may review it in 50 episodes time and update Bells Hells statistics. But for now, we have reached the final post.

If you read all of that and wondered what other posts I am talking about, I would like to direct your attention here, here and here. Those three posts take a look at the group stealth checks performed by each adventuring party that has been the focus of a Critical Role campaign, comparing individual party members, guests, how often they use Pass Without Trace and how much it increases their average!

One may think that by looking at those three posts alone, you can form a good basis of comparison between the groups, but that is where you would be wrong. Because the campaigns span wildly different levels, and I think we can all agree that it is unfair to compare a level 20 party to a level 3 party.

Unfortunately, as Vox Machina's campaign started streaming when they were approximately level 9, and Bells Hells have only just reached level 8, we cannot compare the two. But what we can do is compare both of them to the Mighty Nein! So that's what we're going to do, under the cut!

Congratulations to Professor Merlin Vot for making the discovery of a lifetime that rewrites all existing assumptions (including his own), about the possibility of life in the High Upper Un!

'I carry a lot of sins, like you do.' 'Not anywhere like I do.' 'Don't be so sure.' 'I'm pretty sure, young man.'

commission for @nyarlie, who requested an illustration of one of the most wizard moments of campaign 2 ever 😏 featuring a clean-shaven dirt wizard, which was very fun to paint! i don't draw Caleb without his signature scruff often, but he definitely makes such a handsome lad 🤭 this scene is one of my favorite for the way it characterizes both Caleb and Essek, and i was very happy to rewatch it several times as i worked on this painting.

the way i picture the ninth floor of Caleb's tower (and the space "inside" the beacons) might be a bit unconventional, but i am very much in love with the initial soft gray and starry imagery of dunamancy we had in c2, so it was a special treat for me to be allowed the creative freedom to paint it as such. thank you for commissioning me 💜

Need everyone that watches tlovm to know that in the campaign they spend a good third of an episode having a “cannonball” contest in Scanlan’s mansion. Spells are used. Explosives are set off. Grog is judging and Percy wins because he’s the only one that draws blood.

Thank you for your time

For posterity

On the board game front, Merlin gives me the vibe of someone who is VERY good at Jod.

Does he like Jod? Eh. Does he overall enjoy playing Jod? Yeah, sure, it's fun, he'll play if it's suggested (narrator voice: he likes being good at things and also winning).

Some more UNEND thoughts... considering how the characters have a more "heroic" vibe than in Midst, which had a smorgasbord of fuck-ups, and seeing this contrast in action in the first few episodes. The characters of UNEND are more heroic! They are on this aspirational and exciting mission together!

And so.... where do we go from that? There are a lot of things that define what a character arc is, and what direction it goes, and how it ends. But change of some kind is a necessity for a character in a major role. In Midst we saw a basic trajectory where overtly flawed characters grew to overcome their challenges (Phineas, Lark, Jonas, etc) or got worse (Weepe). Start low, climb up. With a bunch of cheerful optimists all unified in their mission... well, something is going to have to go wrong. Something is going to fall apart. Start high, fall low. I'm not saying, EVIL ARC or anything (haha unless?) or that there's always a firm directionality to it but more like, we're starting with this exquisite confection of positivity, so for there to be change, we gotta poke holes in it in some way. Story involves characters experiencing challenges, more at 11, I know.

But I also think that UNEND will ultimately maintain the trend of Midst Cosmos stories celebrating resilience. Midst is about learning to grow and become a better person even when the path is imperfect, Moonward is about bravery and the lengths people will go to help each other & unify despite their differences and loyalties, and I think that UNEND - wherever they go and whatever becomes of the individual characters - will have something hopeful to impart as well. And I'm looking forward to the ride!

Okay but what's the over/under on Travis deciding in the very last moment of the campaign, a la Grog pulling from the Deck of Many Things, that Chet's heart finally gives out. I'm going with "extremely likely".

I'm glad we all agree. Travis would definitely end the campaign like "Enough post-campaign wedding one-shots. Critical Role has progressed past the need for post-campaign wedding one-shots. It's time for a post-campaign funeral one-shot."

Beau!

oh I love that they included the spirit of travis himself taking over grog to make a strategic decision when the rest of the group is too indecisive and then grog being like “what just happened, I blacked out” after he finishes saying The Smart Thing
