little Frodo painting done on my a5 sketchpad, using watercolour and gouache paint
Companion piece to this painting
I painted over my Annatar portrait with my design for Sauron revealed.
I like to think of Saurons later-age appearance as being bleached of colour, and very wraith-like with shadowed eyes and deadened lips. I also really dig the design in the PJ films where the Mouth of Sauron has cracked lips because of the evil poison he speaks so I was inspired to recreate that here.
Anyway, hopefully the idea comes through lol
Planning on doing a companion piece to my Annatar painting with his true appearance revealed, so I was brainstorming some designs for Sauron. If I was painting an earlier Sauron/Mairon I would probably give him red/gold hair but I imagine Saurons appearance as kind of being leached of colour, bleached and dead looking.
I was also fiddling around with wolf heads on the pauldrons but I’m thinking they may be too complex to find references for lol.
I was so surprised at the love for my Annatar portrait I posted yesterday so I thought I’d explain some of the little details if anyone would be interested :D
The portrait is supposed to have been done during his stay at Eregion ( I like to imagine Celebrimbor had it commissioned). With that in mind, I created a pattern for his clothes with a holly design, which are featured over his clothes and necklace. The design on the right is featured on the silk robe- it’s the same holly design but configured in the shape of an eye ;)
The necklace I liked the idea of Sauron wanting to keep his neck covered- not that I think his fana was still damaged from his battle with Huan, but perhaps just as protection for a perceived vulnerability. At the same time, I added the red glass beads underneath to represent blood drops- something for Sauron to find amusing, that he references his own famous wound in his clothing.
(And of course the Fëanorian star in the mosaic )
I don’t know if any of my little ramblings made any sense, but this was the thoughts process for the painting :)
Portrait of Annatar inspired by classical portraiture
Sliding back into my Tolkien phase atm

Realised I forgot to post the stills from my animation :)
Just the stills of my animation for some detail shots :)
