Since it's apparently Zelink o'clock in the fandom, today I present to you...
100% canon Zelink in the Spanish version of Breath of the Wild.
I heard about this once and now it lives in my mind rent free.
I want to make clear that the only versions I'm familiar with are the English and Spanish versions, so I will be comparing just these two. Nevertheless, I'm sure we could find more hints that point to canon Zelink in other versions. That being said, let us begin.
We all know that, in the English version, it is made clear that Zelda has feelings for Link. Throughout the cutscenes, we already get this idea thanks to some attitudes and gestures, but it is not confirmed until Kass tells us the story about his teacher's unrequited love for Zelda.
With this, Zelda's feelings are basically verified. Kass's teacher was jealous because Zelda was in love with Link. However, he gets into even more detail. Later, in the song, it is implied that her powers awakened thanks to her sacrifice to save Link, who she is in love with.
Nonetheless, when it comes to shipping Link with anyone, we always stumble upon the same problem. Given his quiet nature and his absolute lack of emotions and words, it is difficult to find any sign that he loves anyone back. In this case, apart from taking some things for granted and looking for hidden meanings like the flying petals that are a symbol of endless love, there is not much evidence left to claim that he returns Zelda's love. In order to find the evidence we need, we should turn to other versions of Breath of the Wild, specifically to the Spanish one. This is where things get interesting.
In this same scene, in the Spanish translation, Nyel (which is Kass's name in Spanish) tells us the same story about his teacher, Zelda, Link... Zelda's feelings are once again proved. But the interesting detail about LINK'S FEELINGS is in the song.
Here, the text translates as "Priestess and Princess of mythical beauty: the chosen knight gave his life for her". And what happens when the knight gives his life for his Princess?
Let me translate this for you: "Before such love token, the princess's power awakens inside her and, inside the fortress, she imprisons the Calamity".
Before such love token.
Link's sacrifice. Was a love token. Because he loved Zelda. No further questions, Your Honor.
To sum up, in this version the feelings are no longer just one-sided. Both of them love each other. Zelda only has eyes for him. He gives his life for her as a love token. Zelda's powers awaken thanks not only to the love SHE feels, but to the love THEY share.
I think this is a beautiful translation. And the fact that it is canon, well... It's really good news. I always say that these details are open to many interpretations, but the way the Spanish translators interpreted it basically confirms that both Zelda's and Link's feelings are canon.
I would like to know if there is any other version in which this happens too, it would be so interesting!
