just had a moment of clarity and remembered that heliotrope is not only a plant, but also a mineral. a mixture of green quartz with red inclusions of hematite, also called bloodstone - because in christian tradition, it was believed that the red spots were caused by the blood of jesus falling onto it while he was crucified. thinking about lottie and sacrifices and the blood she sheds to heal and help the others.... thinking about heliotrope being greek for 'towards the sun' and laura lee saying 'i'm going to fly south'....
