evening request part 1: Angua and Sam Vetinari and Granny Weatherwax (two separate requests, but I wish that these two meet ♥)

I spent a lot of time working out what Vetinari is. Vox Populi and Vox Phantasma - now those are easy. But what is Vetinari the voice of? The voice of the city? not really. He's just the voice of Vetinari, really.

Alright, I will start with this one then - everything starts with the glorious revolution and everything starts with the night watch 🌸

Just consider the fact that Vetinari wears the lilac for a second.

It’s one hell of a political statement, coming from a man who is typically all about being very subtle and understated and keeping his cards close to his chest. Just consider how much of a— aha… ballsy move that is.

He’s openly stating with each passing year that he believed in the Glorious Revolution, that he believed that Lord Winder should have been assassinated, that he believed that police brutality on that scale needs to be stamped out once and for all.

That he believed, and still believes, that unfit rulers should be overthrown.

He meets with aristocrats and the “perennial waverers” as they are termed in the book with a lilac bloom pinned to his robe. He wears a symbol of the hopes and dreams of his youth, every year.

It almost reads as a throwaway statement at the end of an incredibly emotional book, but it’s far from it. There’s so much meaning in the fact that Vetinari wears the lilac and visits the little graveyard each year under the cover of darkness. Is it any wonder that he wound down a corrupt City Watch, and is so vehemently against the prospect of war and loss of life?

Do Granny Weatherwax and the Patrician ever have a conversation?

Answer seems to be no. I can’t decide if this is a tragic oversight, or the only way to ensure that reality doesn’t collapse in reaction.

My thesis is that they wouldn’t actually speak. They would just gaze calmly at each other, lips and eyebrows occasionally twitching, until Granny Weatherwax gives one sharp nod, the Patrician makes a gesture reminiscent of a respectful salute, and they go their separate ways. 

Drumknott, meanwhile, has had to hide until Nanny Ogg has left the building.

You see, the only thing the good people are good at is overthrowing the bad people. And you’re good at that, I’ll grant you. But the trouble is it’s the only thing you’re good at. One day it’s the ringing of the bells and the casting down of the evil tyrant, and the next it’s everyone sitting around complaining that ever since the tyrant was overthrown no one’s been taking out the trash.
