You think Guinevere started off insane or did she succumb to it? Maybe start off as a normal princess but her husband just stops having interest in her the moment they’re married, at the wedding multiple members of his friends and family come in with decapitated women’s heads, she gets replaced by a doppelgänger and nobody gives a shit, and the only guy on her side is the fish man who’s insane and obsessed with you but at least he’ll cross the sword bridge for you and demean himself to make you feel better

i don’t think guinevere is insane. she is actually extremely level-headed in general in the texts I’ve read, just temperamental when it comes to lancelot maybe (who, to put it kindly, truly is a freak). but she is actually weirdly good at handling bizarre and frightening situations—which probably comes with the territory of being queen of camelot. when knights are bringing home decapitated heads she immediately is like. “stop fucking doing that. I am assigning you a new job and the job is respect women for the rest of your lives.” and this is just after marrying arthur too. she’s been queen for a week maybe? few months at most? she’s not screwing around and takes her role seriously. she tells the knights when they’ve screwed up. they listen. she has this badass line in le morte as well when she and arthur and co are cornered (she rides to battle w him) with a river behind them and enemies before them and arthur is like not really sure what to do here and she’s like “well I’ll drown before I let myself into the hands of the enemies.” which I think is cool of her. she seems to be very beloved by a good portion of the court of camelot in the false guinevere narrative even though apparently she is not very beloved by arthur (given that he seems to somewhat knowingly replace her). even when this all starts she’s chill. she’s like oh yeah this imposter is crazy, surely nothing will come of it (she’s wrong here. but she’s not frightened!). she’s def like kind of annoying in knight of the cart but that’s also very much the archetype of courtly love and the woman not having to reciprocate the devotion of the knight who’s like killing himself in front of you to impress you. and in le morte later maybe she is a little rude to lancelot? but it’s having to do with the elaine situation which she does not seem to have the whole story on and I don’t really think she’s acting erratically or whatever based on what she seems to know. so yeah I don’t think guinevere is insane at all HOWEVER if there is any character in camelot who would be completely justified in going batshit after all the horrible things she endures it would be her.
